| By letter dated april 15, 2009, hyundai notified the agency that it will conduct a safety recall (nhtsa recall number 09v122) to replace the stop lamp switches on many of its model year 2005-2008 vehicles.see recall 09v122 for a complete list. the agency opened its investigation based on five complaints of stop lamp failure across several 2007 hyundai models. the agency also received early warning (ewr) reports on this issue.most of those failures were traced to the improper operation of the stop lamp switch that controls stop lamp illumination.a malfunctioning stop lamp switch can cause the vehicle's brake lights not to light during braking, or alternatively, it can cause the brake lights to stay lit even when a driver takes the foot off the brake pedal. failure of the stop lamps to illuminate properly creates the hazard of rear end collisions when drivers following the subject vehicle do not recognize that the vehicle is slowing or stopping. hyundai reported one crash incident (a frontal impact), without injury, that was alleged to have been caused by this defect.the agency reviewed the incident and cannot conclude that it is related to this defect. there are other potential problems related to failure of the stop lamp switch: failure of the cruise control to disengage, interference with proper functioning of antilock brakes and electronic stability control, and inability to move the gear shift lever out of park position.based on the above safety recall, this investigation is closed. | ||||||

| This complaint applies to a 2007 hyundai sonata limited (no option for 2007 was available in drop down menu) (issue 1) at or around the initial few days after taking delivery i began to notice abrupt vibration and shaking coming from the steering wheel; substantial enough to feel in the seat. vehicle was taken back to dealership on 3 separate occasions to remedy the problem but they reported that they were unable to duplicate the problem and reported the vehicle to be in manufacturer specification. nonetheless, dealer attempted wheel balance and radial force balance as a good will gesture. problem is now more articulated and the issue remains unresolved. (issue 2) engine emits a rattle noise similar to lifter clatter upon start and continues throughout operation; particularly in colder weather. timing chain tensioner was replaced and one noise was resolved but the continual nature of the lifter clatter remains. dealership and hyundai representative reported that they were unable to duplicate the problem and the issue remains unresolved. (issue 3) fuel sloshing coming from the fuel tank. manufacturer and dealer claims this to be normal and not a safety risk. sound is more pronounced at or around 3/4 tank. brought this to the attention of the dealer and the manufacturer directly and remains unresolved. *nm | |||

| Good morning! i am having problems with my sonata and i need assistance and advise. my vehicle has broke down with me on 3 occasions with the same problem. i am concerned because my warranty will be running out at 60,000 miles and i am concerned about my safety. the belt that goes from the a/c to the motor and the alternator continues to fray and burn up in pieces. at this point the car is inoperable. i was told by the hyundai dealership that they have replaced these belts with chain belts on the new sonata's because of this problem. everytime i have had it repaired they told me that it would not happen again and it has happened (3) times. i contacted the hyundai company last thursday and no one has contacted me or made an attempt to talk with me. thank you for your assistance with this matter. marcia smith *tr | |||
