By letter dated april 15, 2009, hyundai notified the agency that it will conduct a safety recall (nhtsa recall number 09v122) to replace the stop lamp switches on many of its model year 2005-2008 vehicles.see recall 09v122 for a complete list. the agency opened its investigation based on five complaints of stop lamp failure across several 2007 hyundai models. the agency also received early warning (ewr) reports on this issue.most of those failures were traced to the improper operation of the stop lamp switch that controls stop lamp illumination.a malfunctioning stop lamp switch can cause the vehicle's brake lights not to light during braking, or alternatively, it can cause the brake lights to stay lit even when a driver takes the foot off the brake pedal. failure of the stop lamps to illuminate properly creates the hazard of rear end collisions when drivers following the subject vehicle do not recognize that the vehicle is slowing or stopping. hyundai reported one crash incident (a frontal impact), without injury, that was alleged to have been caused by this defect.the agency reviewed the incident and cannot conclude that it is related to this defect. there are other potential problems related to failure of the stop lamp switch: failure of the cruise control to disengage, interference with proper functioning of antilock brakes and electronic stability control, and inability to move the gear shift lever out of park position.based on the above safety recall, this investigation is closed.

My car started having problems in may that when i look them up, are listed as issues that have been recalled by hyundai yet when i contacted hyundai these were not open recalls on my vehicle. my abs/esc light comes on and off. if i turn my car off and re-start it then the light will be gone, only to come on again at some point when i'm driving. i just got new brakes in january and my brakes seem to be working fine. the only time i was concerned was during a road trip when the light was off, but came on when i slammed on my brakes on the highway. my air bag light came on around the same time the brake light started consistently coming on. this light does not go away. i have also been told that i have a back break light that is out yet when i took it to get a new bulb it was working just fine. then the next day when backing up, i could see my car's reflection in a window and that light was out, indicating some sort of electrical short. to top it all off, my check engine light came on today and i will be taking my car in this afternoon to see what that is. my car is up to date on all maintenance. in the last 7 months i have had new brakes, new spark plugs, and a new battery. i'm not sure why these lights are on but it is very frustrating to see recalls for some of these issues, and they just aren't on my car specifically. *tr

During routine service inspection the dealer mechanics reported the rear disk brakes were worn almost metal to metal. i replaced the rear brake pads myself. the driver's side outside pad was worn almost to the metal but the other three pads were worn not much at all. i have photographs. the brakes worked fine before and after the pads were replaced. my son has the exact same year and type vehicle with similar mileage that exhibited the very same pad worn in a like manner.

During braking, brake rotors failed and resulted in difficulty braking. grinding noise noticed for several days prior. upon checking about this particular issue with sonata's online, i determined that there seems to be a prevalent issue with sonata brake rotors prematurely wearing away. again, in 9/2011, i noticed the same problem on the same rear rotors, and will have to get this replaced. initial cost was very high, as the auto shop noted that the rotors and calipers were beyond repair and needed to be replaced.

Stop lamp switch was replaced under recall in sept 09. same part went again in approx july 2011. charged for diagnostics and replacement of stop lamp switch 1429 ckr $79.95 and 1 93810-sk000 switch asm $6.60 for a total of $86.55. dealer, motorworld of wilkes barre, pa indicated that i already had recall done so i would have to pay for this repair. i also own a 2011 sonata and had to have the same part replaced two months ago (under warranty). seems like there is still a problem with this part.

Brakes on both of my 2006 hyundai sonatas often freeze during blowing snow or after driving through snow. thus, the brakes will not allow the car to move after it has been parked, or they will inadequately slow/stop the car when braking. this occurs very frequently whenever it snows, even if it only snows a little . somehow, i'm speculating, the snow blows into the brakes (calipers?) and makes them dysfunctional. i have read on the internet that this is a common problem with hyundai sonatas in the northern tier of states. the worst case happened to me during the recent 2009 christmas snowstorm in the midwest. i could only get my car to barely stop even when i was moving less than 10 miles an hours. thank goodness i did not get into an accident. this has been going on for the past several winters, but this latest incident prompted me to notify nhtsa. thank you. *tr

Front brakes failed due to build-up of (salt) corrosion at 11k miles. dealer had to grind cradles to create clearance (and lube) so calipers would engage. dealer said vehicle would have to be brought in every year to have cradles cleaned, and this was a common problem with this vehicle! this problem was discovered after driving down steep road and rear brakes were smoking excessively, doing all the work to stop the vehicle (poorly). rear brakes subsequently had to be replaced, worn so badly. front brakes were like new (because they weren't working). *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 hyundai sonata. the contact heard a noise coming from the rear brakes. she took the vehicle to a dealer to have the tires rotated, but the noise continued. she returned to the dealer and they were able to hear the same noise; however, they could not identify any failures after the rear brakes were inspected. she had the vehicle state inspected and the technician could also not identify any failures with the vehicle. while turning corners, the noise worsens. the contact took the vehicle back to the dealer and they identified the failure as rusted rotors, which caused the noise. they also informed her that it was because the vehicle had not been driven often. the dealer from where the vehicle was purchased, identified the failure with the brakes and stated that the brake pads, rotors, and calipers needed to be replaced at the cost of $400. the current mileage was 17,570 and failure mileage was 15,900.

I had noticed at first the crack in the dashboard in 2006 right after i had purchased my car. they replaced the dashboard, but not correctly the first time. when i finally got my car back, i attempted to turn the headlights in my car on, at that time all of the interior lights of my car went out. there were wires that were apparently switched. at this time i called the dealership again and informed them of the new problem. this issue was subsequently fixed. after they replaced the dashboard i started to have probelms with the driver and passenger side air bag lights going on.the turned them off and stated it was my fault. about three months later both air bag lights came on again. at this time i took it to another dealer who looked up information on the computer and stated that it must have been my fault again. someone went out to the car and shut them off but no paperwork was written up. then another 3 months later the lights came on again and there was another crack in the dashboard around the passenger side air bag. i called the original dealer again and they ordered another dashboard for the car. at this time i asked them again to check to see about the airbag lights. they have had my car for a week now (i still do not have it back). while all the air bag lights issue was happening, there is also another issue with the abs and esc (electronic stability control) lights also coming on and not going off. i have been informed the the abs and esc light was coming on because there is a braking issue with the car. and the airbag lights that keep coming on and staying on is because of a sensor issue with the passenger side seat. they are not sure why this keeps happening. they are also not sure what caused the brake issue with the abs and esc lights. *jb
