2006 hyundai sonata drooping sun visor, comes down while driving. hyundai will not recall the sun visor although this is know problem and can cause an accident. hyundai is shifting the responsibility of repair onto the owner of vehicle which costs $80 per sun visor and an installation of $20 per visor. basically, $200 for a problem that is not the drivers fault, but a faulty design. *tr

Sun visor will not stay up and out of the way when not needed. visor falls down into the drivers line of vision also creating a constant distraction as the visor drops down and the driver tries to move it up out of the way while driving and trying to focus on traffic, signals, etc.

I own a 2006 hyundai sonata and the sun visor has broken twice, which affects my view of the road. the visor is unable to stay up and out of view when not in use. i've read hyundai online forums and it seems to be a recurring problems with a lot of this model as well as the 2007 model. i've had to slide out the visor extension and wedge it between by rearview mirror and roof of my car, which is not a safe option either as it can become unwedged during driving and fall down and block my view of the road. it hasn't caused an accident yet, but it's only a matter of time which terrifies me. please help.

I own a 2006 hyundai sonata (82k mileage). the driver side seat belt warning light came on and now stays on constantly. based on a web search this issue appears to be a common problem with this model and one that is a major safety hazard. [the reason for the visibility complaint, this vehicle also had both driver side and passenger side sunvisor fail (another safety issue for another time)] i took the car to a hyundai dealer who did not consider the problem within warranty. the dealer did note that the cost to repair could be as much as $1500.00 since the entire seat and safety belt system may require replacement. follow up calls to hyundai found that, though there are hundreds and possibly thousands of similar complaints, they have elected not to issue a recall related to the problem as they did for the passenger side. this is a very popular car model with a major safety issue that needs investigation. i strongly suspect your investigation will arrive at the same conclusion and with your help maybe hyundai will issue a recall before someone is fatally injured. here is a web link with numerous similar complaints: http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2006/hyundai/sonata/frontal+airbag thank you in advance for your help!

Hinge on driver side visor of 2006 hyundai sonata gls has broke and visor no longer stays up. went to pull visor down to block sun and it snapped and now the visor just hangs there. i have to flip the visor backwards into the bracket to keep it out of view. have contact dealership and was told that i am 4 months out of my warranty and that they will not be able to fix it without me paying for the repairs. after viewing multiple forums, this seems to be a common occurance in this make of vehicle. i am really surprised that there hasnt been a recall placed for these. they pose such a hazard in blocking ones view from oncoming traffic, stop lights, pedestrians, etc. considering all the issues that hyundai used to have with their vehicles, you would think that this would have already been something that they would have corrected and placed a recall for.

2006 hyundai sonata sun visor on passenger side broke after 60,000 miles and approximately 5 years making it just out of warranty. passenger side sun visor now hangs loosely and does not retain its position out of the way of driver's vision. very difficult to see properly with the broken sun visor. this is definitely a safety hazard. in a quick internet search, this is a _very_ common complaint for the hyundai 2006 - 2008 sonatas. this condition causes reduced vision to on coming traffic and pedestrians. if hyundai reads the forums, they already know this is a product design defect. if they track the service incident rate of replaced sun visors on this model, they would also know this is a defective design. this is a known safety hazard and should be recalled.

Piece of plastic on sunvisor support cracked, and now it won't stay up, impairing vision. i almost ran through a red light the other day because it blocks the view of traffic lights. i have read all the other complaints on this website and others, but you are doing nothing about it. is there any other agency that will look into this and do something about it?

 1. events leading up to the failure: common use of rotating the sun visor up and down to block the sun. 2. the failure: the visor fails to stay in place and hangs down free-swinging obstructiong between 25% and 45% of the drivers view depending on height of the driver. in my case- the visor hanging down distracts 40% of my view through my windshield and i am 5'10. if left in its current condition, it is going to play a major part in vehicle accidents. this is a common problem among sonata's for 2006. my dealership even admitted to it when i went in to see about getting it repaired 3 years ago. 3. correction of failure- unhinge the visor and shove it into the bracket backwards hoping that it doesn't fall, but usually does on any sort of aggressive braking or accelorating. the dealership told me it would cost over $300 to repair. this happened over 3 years ago. this is a major safety hazard that is going to play a major factor in wrecks. you can find other complaints all over the internet and nothing done about it. i can provide pictures to establish evidence of the problem.

2006 hyundai sonata the driver and passenger sun visor falls straight down blocking your view of the road. going 65 mph you tend to panick when this happens. if this is not a safety issue i don't know what is. i know of two other owners with the same problem. i removed my visor which causes another safety problem (the sun)

The passenger side sunvisor cracked during normal usage, this is a few years after the same thing happened with the driver side sunvisor. both visors had very little usage and were never used other then to block the sun when it was in the passengers or drivers eyes which was at most 2 or 3 times a month. the broken sunvisor no longer will fold up flush with the roof and stays drooping and when going over any bumping motion will lower itself. this is a distraction to the driver at unexpected times and causes the driver to reach over and place it up as far as possible so that visibility isn't reduced. the sunvisor had to be replaced as it could not be repaired nor was it safe to drive knowing that it might drop down.

The driverside sunvisor cracked during normal usage. this is after very low usage. the broken sunvisor would no longer fold up flush with the roof and will lower itself when going over bumps and potholes. this is a distraction to the driver at unexpected times and could drop to the point of blocking the vision of the driver for a short period until the driver lowers their eyes to see below the visor . the sunvisor was immediately replaced as it interferred with safe driving and it could not be repaired.

2006 hyundai sonata driver's side sun visor falls and won't stay up. it obstructs driver's view creating a real safety problem. this is a recurring problem with a great number of sonatas and just replacing the visor with a new one doesn't fix it permanently. there is a large discussion at: http://www.howtomendit.com/answers.php?id=157121

I have a 2006 hyundai sonata that has sun visors that do not stay in place. it just recently started. at first the visors would slip and i would move them back into place. then a week or so ago both visors have started this. this is a huge driving/safety hazard. the roadside issues are too numerous to name. i cannot believe hyundai will not recall the cars with this problem. there are too many cars with the identical problem. i have since applied liberally super glue to the rollers on the visor itself. for now, the visors stays in place. i will have to lift each visor out to move it into another position, even the slightest move would seem to break the seal the glue has made. i will carry some super glue with me for now. but for now, the visors are up and out of the way. i am very disappointed in hyundai corp for not addressing this problem.

I have a 2006 hyundai sonata. both driver and passenger visors have broke when being properly used. on the driver one, there was a cracking sound and a piece of plastic broke off the corner of the visor. both visors do not stay in their non-used or used positions. the visors fall in the sight of driving and can only be held up by other means, such as velcro, which is not effective. i am unable to use my visors at all because i am forced to have them permanently modified in the unused position. when in use, the edge of the visor rests at forehead level making it even more of a hazard, not just because of lack of sight, but because of the fear of getting in a car accident and having the visor impale the driver's or the front seat passenger's head. i have contacted the dealership regarding this issue and was told that my warranty does not cover them and that there is not a recall on them. after reading report after report of other 2006/2007 hyundai sonata owners, it baffles me that nothing has been done.

I have a 2006 hyundai sonota. this car has a known history of the sunvisors breaking or not staying up while not being used. at first the passenger side failed on me after trying several attempts at keeping it in the correct position. now the drivers side is doing the same thing. i can move the visor to the side but this causes loss of sight to my side when driving which could prove to be dangerous. after researching the web it seems many owners with the same car have had problems and they are very expensive to cover out of warranty. my complaint is that the same thing will continue and cost a lot of money to keep repairing.

Both sun visors in my 2006 hyundai sonata broke without warning. they both flop down and won't stay up. i took them apart and found that the plastic friction-sleeve around the metal hanger has broken on each one. the flopped-down visors restrict the driver's vision and their mid-way position between the windshield and the interior of the vehicle makes re-focusing one's eyes between the outside and the inside of the car problematic. my car is out of warranty so i have not had the visors replaced. instead, i put strips of velcro on the roof and on the visors to keep them up.

Lights across instrument cluster will not go off including: esc off, check engine, airbags and abs. there is also a visibility issue regarding the sun visor on the driver side. these are all issues that i have seen many other people are having as well and are potentially dangerous.

The sun visor on my 2006 hyundai sonata will not stay in the 'up' position. it has started to hang in a position where if i move my head forward i can hit it with my forehead. it also blocks vision in front. i have already had one replaced about 2 years ago and now it is broken again. i think there is a manufacturing defect in this. i did an internet search on this issue apparently lots of people have had this issue.
08/09/201060000
The driver's side visor will not stay in the 'up' position or in the fully extended position (closest to the windshield). it falls over time, ending up either poking you in the head (if it was resting against the ceiling) or hanging straight down (if it had been fully extended). this really is a safety hazard!

2006 sonata driver & passenger visors failure. we are now needing the 4th visor that won't stay up. dealer won't cover it as vehicle is over the initial warranty period. was told by the dealer when the 2nd ones broke, that hyundai had corrected the manufacturing defect - don't think so. this is a safety issue as the visor is angled in an unsafe position when broken to the occupant.
09/12/201013420
The driver's side sun visor all of a sudden just dropped down and impaired my vision. this is extremely dangerous and easily could have led to an accident. hyundai needs to recall these defective visors immediately to avoid injury or death to those who will certainly be involved in accidents caused by this defective part.

2006 hyundai sonata sun visor. i have had this replaced numerous times on my car. it will catastrophically fail while driving down the road. last time was in traffic on the free way. had to put car into ditch to avoid hitting another vehicle. 4,000 miles out of warranty and hyundai wont replace.

I am the original owner of a 2006 hyundai sonata. the driver side sun visor recently broke. my understanding from information i received from the dealer and reports that i have seen on the internet this is a wide spread problem. i believe the 2008 sonata had a recall for the same issue. hyundai should be forced to recall and correct the apparent defect with the sun visors. i have even heard of reports from people who have already had their visors replaced that the replacements have also broken. it makes for very unsafe driving conditions because when the visor hangs down, your vision is impaired. even when you push it to the side, your vision is partially blocked. what other recourse do consumers have to ensure the manufacturers are selling merchantable goods. we as consumers have no way of inspecting the sun visor mechanisms to know if they are working or will work properly when a car is purchased.

Tl- the contact owns a 2006 hyundai sonata. the contact stated that the sun visors on the driver and passenger side fall down. the contact and family members have hit their head on them and the drivers side falls down in front of the drivers face, obscuring visability while operating the vehicle. hyundai has not been notified and the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure and current mileages were approximately 66,000. rd

Faulty sunvisor on 2006 hyundai sonata gls. it worked fine until march when it started to creep down when on bumpy roads. now, june 2010, it fails to stay up at all. it is right in the line of vision of 5' 10 male. i have removed 2 screws to remove it from the car until i can find out what to do. warranty ran out at 60000 miles. it had 68000 miles on it when problem began. this is on drivers side. it has not been mistreated in any way. i have kept the visor in trunk.
03/01/201063000
Drivers side sun visor will not stay in place. the sun visor stays in the down position blocking my line of sight while driving. i had to velcro the sun visor to the headliner to prevent the sun visor from falling down. i disassembled the sun visor and found that the plastic arm inside the sunvisor was broken in half and that this is the reason for the sun visor to fail. i have 63,000 miles and the part is 3000 miles out of warranty. reseaching on the internet i have found that this is a major complaint and so i'm reporting my broken sun visor to you.
05/05/2010
I have a 2006 hyundai sonata gls in which i bought in october 2007 with 24k miles. the car was still under warranty when the driver's side sun visor would not return to the upright position. it wouldn't go up or down, but just hang down in my face. had to try and clip it to the roof until i could get it fixed. the dealership said it was a common problem. two weeks later, the same thing happened to the passenger side. two years after having both sun visors replaced, i am facing the same problem on the driver's side again. it is a tremendous safety hazard as my vision is blocked and i am constantly distracted by trying to keep it out of the way. it is also hazardous in the morning and evening when facing the sun, as my eyes have no shield and am blinded. i know this has been a common problem with the sonata so i urge you to investigate and find a solution with hyundai.

The drivers side sun visor dropped down while i was driving & it will not stay up and this happened at night. also the passenger side sun visor will sometimes drop down if i hit a bump in the road. other owners of the 2006 hyundai sonata have similar complaints. i feel there should be a safety recall.

2006 hyundai sonata: the driver's sun visor stopped working - it basically lost its tension and, although still hinged, it flipped down on its own while i was driving down the highway at 70 mph. it not only startled me and caused me to jerk the wheel but it distracted me momentarily and i was just thankful it was not a two-way road where i could have hit an oncoming vehicle. in addition, it hangs straight down directly in my vision, obstructing it so much that i cannot see adequately. i improvised and used velcro to affix it in its original, closed position. however, the velcro sticky backing gave out today and, again, the visor suddenly dropped startling me and obstructing my vision. my car has over 72,000 miles and is out of warranty to repair this. i looked on-line to see if there was a way to fix this defect and discovered countless complaints and concerns for the exact same thing. i certainly don't think i've misused the visor - i don't even use it that much - so it's not an issue of mishandling. with as many complaints as i saw on-line, i think this is a manufacturing defect that warrants attention. thank you. *tr

2006 hyundai sonata bought in 07. floppy drivers side visor was replaced as it would not stay up. now both drivers and passengers side are floppy. obviously a design flaw and should be recalled. this is definitely a safety issue as the visors when flopped down block the drivers vision! there are many other similar complaints easily located on the internet by searching for 'sonata visor.' apparently hyundai has not yet offered to fix this problem, nor recognize it as a significant defect. what will it take someone getting killed before this becomes important enough?? this has now occurred twice - first repair was 2007. now both visors are defective to the point where my teenage daughter (who drives the car) has asked for the visors to be removed (i will probably attempt a temporary fix with velcro).

The driver side visor hangs down and won't stay up. the failure occurs all of the time. it will either hang straight down blocking my view or i turn it towards the window but that makes it more difficult to get in and out without hitting my head. this is a safety hazard. i have not replaced it yet as i think the visor assembly should last longer than 60k miles (no longer under warranty) and don't think it is right i should have to pay for that. *tr

Hyundai sun visors swings down while driving. my passenger visor broke while driving, about six month later the drivers sun visor broke. i contacted other hyundai owners and they all have the same problem. i believe this could cause a crash. with the visor n the down possession you cant see the traffic light. *tr

The pump for the windshield wiper fluid went out right after the warranty ran out at 60k miles. it was either defective or this is a planned obsolescence. although this is not a major issue like brakes, when you are on the freeway and get splashed with mud from a passing truck, and you can no longer see through your windshield since the wipers just smear the mud over the glass, the absence of a working fluid pump could be life threatening. my husband had to pull off the road and use water from a bottle of drinking water he had in the car to clear the windshield so he continue driving safely. in this economy many people will not be able to pay the $120 + to replace the pump and will continue to drive with decreased visibility. *tr

While driving a 2006 hyundai sonata with 30,000 miles, the driver side sunvisor just flopped down while driving on the interstate highway system on i-95 at 70 mph. there was no warning and the visor blocked the drivers vision because it would not return to the up position. since the car was being driven on a vacation trip that had been previously planned and in a different location, it was not practical to go to a strange dealership. to solve the problem on the remainder of the trip, i used a wooden clothspin clipped to the visor and put the sunvisor to the left side of the vehicle and put the clothspin behind the driver side hand hold located on the inside of the roof of the car. since the trip was going to be for about a week, i later used a rubber band to keep the visor high enough to enter an exit the driver door. the visor was replaced at the dealer back home and i became aware that this seemed to be a frequent problem on this car. this is a very dangerous condition and this agency should look into this serious obstruction of driver visibility when this condition occurs. of all the vehicles i have owned in the last 40 years, this is the only one to have this problem. *tr

2006 hyundai sonata sun visors will not stay up. falls down in line of vision. started with passenger side and now the driver side. dealer would not repair as i was <5000 miles over warranty. based on internet this is a common issue with hyundai's. seems some have been replaced 3 to 4 times. *tr

Interior sun visors fail and do not stay in the up position. on going problem. an order for replacements has been back ordered according to the dealer because of the volume of failures. because the visors drop down unexpectedly and do not stay in place when raised, there is a serious hazard from vision impairment. driving with the visors down impairs vision out of the front of the vehicle, especially for taller drivers--because the visors block more of the normal range of vision. because of this problem, the visors also cannot be effectively used as intended in adverse lighting conditions. *tr

2006 hyundai sonata - driver side sun visor has broken for a 2nd time. replaced the 1st one in october 08 at my expense, the part was $127.00. when i called to see if it was under warranty i was advised it was a cosmetic issue and not a safety issue. now i am in need of another one, but i think i will do without because i don't want to pay for another one. the visor became difficult to move and as i lowered it i could hear it cracking inside. this is definitely a safety issue because the visor won't stay up or down, it falls into your line of sight. *tr

I have a 2006 hyundai sonata and the arm on the sun visor cracked and the visor fell while i was driving, obstructing my view and nearly causing me to have an accident. i have since done some research, and hyundai sent out a technical service bulletin to dealers/service & parts managers about this very problem in december of 2008. customers weren't notified of the problem, and i have found that it has been an issue for a number of customers (there are message boards on hyundai-forums.com about the issue). some are getting it fixed under warranty (after it breaks & obstructs visibility), however, i just missed the warranty period and am expected to pay $83 just for the part to replace a safety issue that hyundai has been aware of. apparently it's not a big enough problem to them to warrant a recall. *tr

2006 - 08 hyundai sonata sun visors break very early in car's life. mine was around 41000 mi. driver side visor broke when putting it down one morning in may 2009, now the passenger side visor is broken too. the plastic that surrounds the bar in the elbow just snaps and flies off, resulting in the visor flapping down limply in your face, blocking vision completely. this is a major safety issue and it is very common. hyundai dealer acknowledged it is common and had plenty in stock. they agreed to replace 1st one for free, though not under warranty. i hope the same this time. please look up hyundai sonata visor on your search engine. you will find perhaps hundreds of entries. i stopped at about 40 indiv. entries with exactly this problem. you know those are only the ones who entered it, and they probably represent 1000 each. *tr

The driver side sun visor on our 2006 hyundai sonata has suddenly stopped being able to be in the up position. it also cannot be placed totally down. as a result it is hanging down and impeding vision and hits me in the head if i lean forward to see traffic or move my head to look over before moving into another lane. there is definitely a safety risk with the failure of this part. *tr

I was driving in my 2006 hyundai sonata and i turned into the sun pulled down my visor and it broke and wouldn't stay up two weeks later the passenger side did the same thing u wouldn't think a visor was a safety issue but it sure is when it wont stay up or out of your face i took it to a local dealer they said they have a recall but that mine wasn't on it apparently the problem is more wide spread then they say the local dealer says he replaces atleast one a day that isn't under the recall. *tr

I own a 2006 hyundai sonata and the sun visors on both sides of the vehicle do not stay in the up and stowed position which is a known problem with these vehicles and it is an extreme safety hazard when they fall down while the vehicle is in motion and block the drivers field of vision which is what happened to me and it nearly caused a major freeway accident. the visor fell down blocking my vision while i was on the i-15 freeway and it happened right as i was switching lanes during a very congested time of the day. as i tried to move the visor and took my eyes off the road and the traffic around and nearly caused a major freeway accident. i finally grabbed the visor and tore it out of the overhead mount and tossed it in the back seat! that is how extreme and hazardous these darn visors are to safe vehicle operation. *tr
06/08/2009880001
Both of the sun visors on my 2006 hyundai sonata broke under normal activity. they were not pulled on or used inappropriately. both will not stay in the up position. this is a driving hazard because it limits visibility and is a distraction for the driver of the car. often times, i hit my head on the visor. night time is the most difficult time because there is no reason to have the visor down (no sunlight) but the visor hinders proper vision of the road. *tr
07/05/2009594001
I have a 2006 hyundai sonata and have had the driver's side visor break on me 3 times, each through normal usage. when it initially breaks while driving the visor will drop into the drivers view with the inability to move it out of the way. after a while of driving with one hand, i had forced it out of the way, which further caused breakage of the tension and allowing me to move it to the side. however, it will only stay down at this point. internet searches with hyundai sonata visor will show cases of multiple breakages for many owners. for example here: http://www.fixya.com/cars/t867360-sun_visor_drivers_side i'm sure further investigation of warranty claims for this part will reveal cases as well. the date listed is the 3rd time this has happened to me. in addition, further safety concerns with their lack of stock. i have been waiting for almost 3 weeks, driving without a visor, which has become very difficult at times with the sun in the eyes. do we need a terrible accident to occur in order to cause them to redesign a simple yet important piece? *tr

During normal use of my sunvisors they both broke. when it first began both visors would fall anytime i hit a bump, blocking my view of the road, very dangerous. i would push them back up. this happened over a period of several months. at this point both visors hang down and will not stay in the up position. since they remain in the down position they obstruct my view of the road and are a danger. at this point all i have both visors tied with rope to the handle bar near the top of each door. *tr

The sun visors in my vehicle have broken several times since purchasing. the dealer has admitted that this is a factory defect but they continue to install these defective visors. when the visor breaks, it hangs directly in the drivers line of sight.

Driver side sun visor makes racheting noise when driver adjusts... then breaks and no longer moves up or down or stays in upward position. rather, visor flops down and hangs in driver's line of vision and driver hits head on it upon entering/exiting vehicle . *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 hyundai sonata. the contact stated that the air bag light illuminates whether or not someone was seated in the front passenger seat. the dashboard that contained the air bag was cracked all around. the entire dashboard was replaced, but the passenger side air bag light still illuminates. in addition, the driver's side seat would not move up when adjusted and the driver's side window would not go down. they were both replaced under warranty. the contact is extremely dissatisfied that she purchased a brand new vehicle and has experienced major failures. the current mileage was 13,000 and the failure mileage was unavailable.

While driving at 70 mph, i noticed the white line on right side of road curve sharply inward toward vehicle. this startled me. at first i thought the road curved, then it made me dizzy. those two feelings lasted about 5 seconds total, more than enough time to cause a serious accident. it turns out the windshield has visual distortions along the lower and side edges. i have noticed this effect in another sonata as well. *js
