In a march 5, 2012 letter to nhtsa, nissan north america, inc. (nissan) submitted a defect information report identifying a defect in the combination meter circuit board in approximately 8,120 model year 2003 through 2004 infiniti m45 vehicles manufactured from march 7, 2002 through june 3, 2004 (recall no. 12v-088). according to nissan, heat generated by several components of the circuit board may cause solder cracks due to thermal shock.open circuits created by the solder cracks may cause the fuel gauge to read higher than the actual amount of fuel remaining in the gas tank or always indicate full.because of this condition, drivers may run out of fuel without notice, resulting in an engine stall without warning with no possibility of restart. the office of defects investigation (odi) analyzed complaint data provided by nissan as well as complaints submitted to odi from consumers.in total, there were 315 unique reports indicating an inaccurate fuel level reading while driving, including 61 that resulted in an engine stall incident (7.5 incidents per thousand vehicles).in addition, nissan provided warranty data showing 2,525 claims for replacement of the subject component (31% claim rate).nissan will begin owner notification in mid-april 2012.owners of the recalled vehicles will be notified to take their vehicle to an infiniti dealer, who will install a sub-amplifier in the combination meter to bypass the electric circuit and ensure accurate fuel level indication.this preliminary evaluation is closed.the odi reports cited above can be viewed at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints under the following identification numbers (odi nos.): 10429412, 10427140, 10426741, 10424642, 10423199, 10418078, 10416519, 10414944, 10412053, 10408935, 10406834, 10406096, 10404206, 10404080, 10395207, 10392714, 10386134, 10380863, 10374719, 10373992, 10369584, 10365717, 10365428, 10356315, 10353972, 10351181, 10349252, 10348351, 10342961, 10342641, 10336272, 10329869, 10325399, 10324572, 10323996, 10323757, 10322403, 10320190, 10318987, 10317547, 10317273, 10317234, 10317030, 10308445.

The office of defects investigation has received 43 complaints alleging inaccurate fuel gauge reading in model year 2003 through 2004 infiniti m45 vehicles, including 26 incidents alleged to result in engine stall.all 26 incidents reported stalling because the fuel level reading indicated fuel in the tank when there was none.the complaints show an apparent increasing trend, with most received within the past year.a preliminary evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency and potential safety consequences associated with the alleged defect.

2003 infiniti m45. consumer writes in regards to recall concerning fuel gauge *tgw the consumer is requesting reimbursement of related expenses of $2,168.76 as he previously paid to have the defect corrected. the consumer stated the vehicle had to be towed, where an inspection revealed the gas tank was empty, even the needle read half full. the fuel pump sending unit was replaced, but it did not rectify the problem. finally in december 2011, during a smog test, it was discovered the fuel gauge was defective. *jb

I'm sincerely with no recourse to fixing what is wrong with my car since it has been purchased. i bought the vehicle in 2007 and the very day i bought the vehicle, it ran out of gas even though the fuel gauge cluster showed it was half full. i took it back to the dealership and they fixed it. i then found out there was a recall and i went back to my dealership because my fuel guage still does not work properly and my wife and my one year old ran out of gas again a week ago on the highway. the dealership continues to state there isnt a recall for fuel guage issues, but i believe there should be. please help as they are seeking close $1500 to fix the issue

My gas gauge shows incorrect readings, i have to go by gallons of gas i put in to car to determine miles i can drive. when i start the car gauge shows one reading a few blocks later it shows another. my car stopped some weeks ago on busy street when gauge showed a 1/4 of a tank on the gauge, i had to call roadside service to get home.

I bought a 2003 infiniti m45 from a private lot, and the gas guage showed full. i drove this vehicle about 20 miles that day and it died on the street while i was driving through my residence. couldnt figure it out until we smelled gas so i had to have someone to bring me gas in a gas can and the car started right up. the private lot didnt want to do anything about it since i drove it off the lot that day.

Purchased 2003 infiniti m45 in december of 2009. the fuel guage did not read correctly as of purchase date, always reading half full to full. dealer inspection found that entire cluster needs replaced.
03/24/201195000
The fuel gauge does not accurately reflect actual fuel level. it reads full 100% of the time regardless of how much fuel is actually in the tank.

The car stalled when i was driving on 880 freeway left lane. luckily i succeeded to steer the car through the lanes to the right curb. when i looked at the fuel gauge (asked by police officer that stopped by), it showed slightly more than one quarter. the car was towed to frontier infiniti dealership in santa clara. the dealership checked the car and claims that the gas tank was empty. so it looks like the fuel gauge was not indicating correctly. no repair action was taken.

This relates to nhtsa investigation pe11038. i write about a faulty design that infiniti did not recall and will not take responsibility for. some time ago, my fuel gauge became erratic, then the service engine soon light went on. the trouble code, p0462, was for fuel level sensor a circuit low input (not really news since the gauge wasn't working). i took it to a shop that replaced the fuel sender and fuel pump, but that didn't solve the problem. they told me that the instrument cluster had to be replaced and that infiniti has redesigned the cluster because the original design was faulty. as i was told, the design error caused the cluster to fail when the fuel sender failed. i see online that this is a recurring problem and one that infiniti will sometimes take responsibility for - though not for me. i understand, of course, that manufacturers generally need to put some limits on their warranty liability. my fuel sender failed after my warranty had expired, and i would not expect infiniti to cover the cost of that repair. however, the instrument cluster was poorly designed such that it too could fail if the fuel sender went bad. that, apparently, is a problem that infiniti knew about years ago and chose not to address. it seems reasonable to me that infiniti would not issue a recall for such an issue that would likely be seen only by a minority of owners. however, it also seems fair that the owners who are affected - regardless of their warranty status at the time of failure - would have their faulty clusters replaced at infiniti's expense (which would certainly be a small expense compared to a recall). repeated inquiries to infiniti - directly and through my dealer - have elicited only the response that my car is out of warranty.

The fuel gauge no longer works correctly. i ran out of gas in the middle of the street and was nearly rear ended several times before i was able to move the vehicle off the street. my wife, children, myself and other drivers were all put in harm's way due to this faulty issue. from reading the forums, this error on nissan's part is plaguing many of these vehicles and will eventually affect them all. please consider that this model m45 was sold in the us for only two model years (2003, 2004). the combined sales for these vehicles from 2002-2004 was only 7,855 before they abandoned the y34 platform and went to the new y50 platform. so the number of complaints will not be that of a toyota camry. from what i gather on this website, at least 1% of all 03/04 m45 owners have filed a complaint with nhtsa. there are hundreds of others that have this issue but have not filed a complaint. this is one of the most discussed topics in the infiniti owners forums. my vehicle is now showing two error codes on the obd-ii readout: p1444 (evap canister purge volume control solenoid valve) and p0462 (fuel level sensor). from what i understand, some people have had the fuel level sensor replaced by infiniti, but this does not fix the issue. others have had their instrument cluster sent off and replaced by a third party to repair nissan's faulty factory soldering. this is the cause for the fuel gauge not working and for the error codes. please consider this information and that of the other complaints to have nissan issue a recall to fix this fuel gauge issue. thank you.

I was driving my 2003 infiniti m45 on or around june 30, 2011 at 65mph on highway 290 near the wolf rd exit in chicago. all of a sudden while i was in the left lane, my car started jerking heavily and my power steering went off making the car really hard to steer. i looked at the dash and saw no warning msgs come on.... i carefully veered my car through heavy traffic towards the right lane and shoulder and i barely missed a truck coming in the far right lane! as i got to the shoulder and caught my bearings and was about to call an emergency tow truck a cop came and asked what happened. i explained it to him and he said maybe you need some gas? i looked at my dash and my fuel gauge still showed almost half a tank available but i took his advice. he took me to the closest gas station to get gas, we went back and filled the car and started the car which started fine now! i was in disbelief that my fuel gauge was broken and it almost got me into a heavy accident that might have severely injured me!! since then, my fuel gauge has not come back to normal and i don't have the extra money needed to fix it as i do believe its infiniti/nissan's job to fix it!!

2003 infiniti m45. consumer states gas gauge was giving erratic readings *tgw the consumer stated he ran out of gas with no warning from the gas gauge or low fuel indicator. apparently, a service bulletin was issued regarding faulty indicators and the vehicle was repaired free of charge. however, about 16 months ago, the consumer noticed the gas gauge was once again providing erratic readings. two dealers informed the consumer that since the gauge was previously repaired under the service bulletin, that he would not be eligible for a complimentary repair again. the consumer was also informed the cost of the repair would be $500. unfortunately, the consumer ran out of gas again. *jb

As i was driving hike after work on 95 south my infiniti all of a sudden shut off while i was on the middle lane on the highway, i manages to let it ride over and get to the emergency lane before the car came to a complete stop, i did not know what was the issue until i had it towed to my mechanic and he told me that the car had no fuel, i did not understand because the gauge read a quater tank, after doing some research and getting my car scanned for the check engine light that is now on beause of it, i found out that this model m 2003-2004 all have the same issue with the gas gauge (instrument cluster).

The fuel guage stopped indicating the correct fuel level which left me stranded on a dangerous highway when i ran out of fuel.

The car stopped in the middle of the street because it was out of gas, but the indicator was showing about 40% of a full gas tank. there was no low fuel warning before the car ran out of gas. this is the second time the fuel indicator failed; the same problem was repaired 2 or 3 years ago.

I first incurred a fuel gauge issue with my 2003 infinity m45 sedan around approximately december 2009. my mother was driving the car at the time of first incident and the fuel gauge had read full. on her way to work she ran out of gas which caused an engine failure. as a result, she was stranded on the side of a major highway. upon taking the car to a local infinity dealership they were almost instantly able to diagnose the problem as a faulty instrument gauge cluster. i was told the part alone was around $900 and after labor, it would be over $1000 to fix. my online research has proven that this is a very common problem and several third party companies have begun offering repair services for this specific issue. i have come into contact with well over 20 03-04 infinity m45 owners who have the same issue. some owners have experienced this problem with as few as 20,000 miles. it is an issue that infinity is aware of, but it is my opinion that they choose not to recall the issue when they can make an extra $1000 off replacing the instrument cluster. i was made aware that the issue was no under investigation. there are only around an estimated 8100 03-04 m45s currently still in use. as a result, our voice is not heard very loudly even though the problem is extremely common in these vehicles. i am more than willing to offer any further information on my personal experience with the matter.

The fuel gauge stopped accurately indicating the amount of fuel in the vehicle. subsequently the car ran out of fuel while driving on local road causing disruption in traffic before it could be moved to the shoulder. after a cursory check to see if anything looked to be amiss, we decided to start with the simple solutions and work toward the more complex. we added 5 gallons of gas to the car and it immediately cranked and ran fine. this is when we noticed that the gas gauge failed to move. the gauge showed to be about 1/2 full before we added fuel and didn't move after adding the fuel. the fuel indicator has now moved to past full and hasn't moved since. we had an infiniti dealer look at the car and they gave us an estimate of $1502.00 to make the repairs. the malfunctioned occurred at or near 72,000 miles, well after the warranty period. reviewing information on the internet shows that this appears to be a rather common occurence for this year/model. often this was repaired by infiniti in cars that were still in the warranty period. below is a link to a website thats has over 160 posts concerning this problem. http://forums.nicoclub.com/m45-fuel-gauge-problem-post-here-if-you-have-had-it-t316682-150.html

I know there are numerous complaints on fuel gauge issues with the 03-04 m45. my car now has 87k and has had this issue since around 73k miles. once it gets down to 1/4 tank, it will sometimes go to e and turn the light on or go back and forth between 1/4 and 1/2 tank marks. i know the qx56 had a recall for the sending unit but the gauge clusters are the issue with these cars. i'm hoping infiniti will provide some help since this is quite a big concern for every driver. thank you.

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 infiniti m45. the contact stated that the fuel gauge would provide erroneous fuel level readings. the contact mentioned that the vehicle stalled as a result of running out of fuel although the fuel gauge advised that the tank was full. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who verified the failure and advised that the instrument panel needed to replaced. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 30,000 and the current mileage was 100,000.

The fuel gauge read full and i ran out of gas on the highway, fortunately i was in the right lane and avoided an accident. i filled the tank up and the next day the engine light came on and the car kept cutting off while i was driving home from work. i got to a gas station and the tank was 3/4 full. i took the car to the dealer who told me i had failed timing sensors which they replaced for $705.04. one hour after leaving the dealer the engine light came on again. i took the car back and they said they just needed to clear the codes. the next day the engine light came on again. i went to a private station and was told i had a dtc code p0462 and this was a known problem with this vehicle with the only fix being to replace the entire gauge cluster. i did not have the money at the time to have this corrected. i now have to be inspected and have no choice.
08/04/2011
Faulty gas gauge readings and check engine light with code 0462. troubleshooting revealed no +12 v from insturtment cluster (combination meter) to fuel level sensor. no opens or shorts in wiring harness. all points to a defective gauge cluster.

Gas gauge has faulty readings. consistently reads 3/4 to full when in actuality actual level is approaching empty. after fill-up gauge reads full but status does not track with actual gas in fuel tank.
05/15/201190000
Fuel gauge stops at half full, and returns toward full until running out of gas. there are two low gas warnings (light and message) which no longer work. after several months of using odometer for approximate gas amount status, the check engine light illuminated. the auto zone code check shows the fuel level sender is faulty. turns out this a a common problem for this make and model, and many fixes (sender unit and gauge cluster) do not work.

For the past year i have been having a issue with the fuel gauge on my 2003 infiniti m45. first i noticed the problem while driving when my fuel reading was at 1/4 tank and the gauge started to rise to a full tank. i did not like what was happening so i promptly went and put gas in the car to fill the tank. after a day or two of city driving in chicago there was no change to my fuel reading. i wasn't until 3 weeks ago i was on the dan ryan express way when the problem really scared me. i was driving and my car started to sputter when i noticed that my fuel reading was still at 3/4 full. it shut off completely in high speed traffic and there was no fuel in the tank. the minute man just happened to be coming and saw me and gave me a gallon of gas. i was fortunate that i was able to get to the shoulder without causing any serious to fatal incident. this should be a factory recall because it's absolutely to many infiniti m cars on the road with this issue. from my perspective, it will get addressed when there's a fatal accident where someone is rear ended due to this malfunction. please address this problem. thank you.

Fuil gauge does not show correct amount of fuel resulting in running out of gas. i have been dealing with the problem for almost 2 years. now the service engine light came up and the issue requires fixing in order to pass emission control. this is well known problem, but infiniti refuses fixing it.

I purchased the infiniti 2003 m45 before i knew about the fuel gauge problem. the shop i use has ordered 3 oem gauge clusters from infiniti all three would not work.with all the complaints and the safety issues why does infiniti refuse to fix this problem.it is a real surprise that a problem from 2003 still can not be fixed eight years later.this issue needs investigation and infiniti needs to be held responsiable for all repairs in other words recall.

The fuel gauge on my 2003 infiniti m45 is defective. it began to occur at 101,000 miles intermittently, but now is a constant problem. the fuel gauge correctly reads the tank level until about 1/2 tank at which point it severely drops, or severely rises to full. i know this to be a problem with this particular model in the fuel gauge cluster, and tried to have it fixed at the dealer. they did not fix it under warranty, and said there was no recall, however they recognized many other owners had the same issue. other owners have said the only way to correct the problem is to completely replace the gauge cluster, however, i will not pay for a defective part at that price, so i have been keeping track of mileage in order to time fill-ups. the danger lies in the fact that the fuel light will not come on, and the tank will read above half-full when the tank is close to empty. there is severe risk of running out of gas on the highway and causing an accident.

Tl- the contact owns an infiniti m45. the contact stated the fuel gauge does not read properly on the instrument panel. the contact is concerned because the vehicle can run out gas and due to the failure the low fuel warning does not alert when the vehicle is running out of gas. the vehicle had not been inspected. the failure mileage and current mileage were 58,000.rl

Purchased 2003 infiniti m45 with 104k miles at volvo of houston, tx and drove back to austin, tx. the fuel gauge read more that half a tank in the car, but was in fact closer to empty. while driving car ran out of gas on a main thorough fare had to call aaa roadside assistance for towing to local autorepair shop. in the past year have learned that this is a common problem the nissan corp refuses to recall.

2003 infiniti m45, vehicle stalled in highway traffic on 2 separate occasions due to low fuel. fuel gauge and electronic fuel monitoring system both showed over 1/2 tank of fuel on both occasions. i narrowly missed being rear ended in one instance and t-boned on another as i tried to merge onto uncoming traffic. fuel gauge cluster and fuel sensor need replacing.

My infinti m45 2003 model is having issue with fuel gauge not showing correct amount of gas presence in the tank. fuel gauge showed gas tank full when it is nearly empty or show empty when tank is full. fuel gauge indication is very erratic and does not provide correct information. my wife had at least 2 times stops on highway with kids and called me to bring the gas due to faulty gauge. when i had this erratic behavior of fuel gauge during warranty period, i had taken it to the dealer that they never fixed and provided some explainations to avoid the situation and adjusted something to avoid the situation at that time. once the warrantly expired, dealer was ready to fix the issue with about $700 charge changing the readout cluster and fuel gauge sensor. dealer ignored my constant complaint during warranty period. it seems this is a wide spread issue in many infiniti 2003 m45 models and several nissan models according to many online discussion groups. my car has now about 92300 miles and inaddition to fuel gauge faulty behavior, i also get the service engine soon light now. i have taken the car to a mechanic (not the dealer) and it was identified as fuel gauge senor issue and gave me about $700 estimate to fix it as dealer indicated on previous occasions. according to my online research and mecahnic inputs, this is a known issue for infiniti and nissan models. it is very risky to drive the car with false sense of security, especially with kids not knowing the amount of gas in the tank. my constant complaint to the dealer had not been answered during warranty but now ready to fix it with a $700 price tag. this is not an isolated incident and need to be addressed with manufacturer by the authority that consumer requests have been ignored. your direct involvement would be greatly appreciated.

Fuel gauge showing wrong level of gas. had fuel sending unit replaced twice still not working. now they tell me i have to replace the gage cluster. this will cost over $2000.00. this is a known defect and there should be a recall on this before somebody gets killed, or is infiniti waiting for someone to get killed before they do the recall? .

There seems to be a gas gauge issues with my2003 infiniti m45. i was on the highway at about 65 miles per hour when the car engine stopped and that car became non responsive. i was barely able to pull over to the far right hand lane without the car's power steering. the gas gauge read full but the the tank was actually empty. i was lucky to have avoided a collision. after reading several posts i have come to find that this is a known nissan/ infiniti issue. why has there not been a recall been placed on the nissans but no the infiniti's?

I purchased my m45 from used car dealer and while driving home the car stalled during chicago rush hour traffic. the wrecker towed me back to dealership who asked if i ran out of gas - i thought not possible since the fuel gauge read 3/8. the dealership filled the gas tank and car started up. i was stranded a second time in rush hour traffic in residential area and this time my tank read 7/8. check engine light is on (code p0462) due to low voltage level to the fuel level sensor due to faulty instrument cluster. inaccurate fuel gauge readings could leave the driver and or their family in danger of being seriously or fatally injured in a rear-end accident if the car stalls on the interstate. nissan infiniti car owners club has identified no less than 50 other 2003-04 m45 car owners who have experienced this problem. nissan north america is aware but refuses to correct the problem.

I purchased my 2003 m45 used from a private party at around 90k. a short time after i purchased it, while driving in heavy morning atlanta traffic, my car ran out of gas and left me stranded on the side of the highway. i realized that the gas gauge indicated i had a full tank of gas when in fact my car had completely run out of gas. i realized i had a problem. i took to my car to a mechanic that specializes in infiniti's. the gas gauge repair bill was going to be more than i could pay to fix it. to keep track of my gas needs, i just started using the trip odometer (mileage indicator.) i fill up at the tank after driving 250 miles. i then zero out the counter and repeat the process. last month the engine check light came on at 102k. i took back to my mechanic and he said it was the fuel sensor needing to be fixed. i have no idea why it took over 18 months to come on. my birthday is in january so i had to have my emissions done. i failed due to fuel level sensor circuit low input. i cannot afford to get this fixed. i also cannot afford not having an updated tag. i called the dealer twice after explaining problem with no call back. i called infiniti customer service and was told there was nothing they could do. *tr

Gas gauge failure on infiniti m-45 2003 model. gas gauge would read full - 3/4 full when the tank was below 1/4 tank. would lead to running out of gas unless the gas was monitored by the number of miles between fill ups. this is a dangerous situation - owners potentially running out of gas when trying to cross an intersection pull out in traffic, etc. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 infiniti m45. on approximately nine occasions, the vehicle would completely shut off and sometimes would not restart. the vehicle had to be towed to the dealer approximately four times. they stated that the failure could be caused by the shift lock or the fuel system, but there was no resolution. the current mileage was 50,300 and failure mileage was 5,000.

I have had my infiniti m45 vehicle only four months now and i just realized about 3 weeks ago that the gas gauge wasn't reading correctly and i did some research on it. going on a lot of forums, ive been getting many people saying this happens to their vehicle. i went down to ask about a price for the part and job and i was told 900 or so. i do not believe it is fare to myself and many other infiniti drivers to have to spend that much on an already great luxury vehicle. i been stuck 2 times on the highway and one time with my daughter. this was my gift after a rough deployment and i believe if i should get charged it should only be the labor work for an hour or so.

*jb
