While attempting to repair both driver's and passenger's seat warmer system that was no longer working, i discovered that the factory installed heated seats had apparently shorted out and caused the foam cushion in each of the seats to catch fire. the wiring had burned a hole approximately 4 inches long and 1-2 inches deep. fortunately, the fire did not spread far within the seat. upon doing an online search, it appears that this is a very common problem. *tr

Driver's seat was wobbling. my husband took it out and found one metal fitting that bolts seat to frame totally broke and another one cracked. this is our son's vehicle and we are concerned about his safety in this vehicle. in much research, there are many, many more with the same problem. we live in a city where rear end collisions are not uncommon. this is a severe safety problem. does someone have to die before a recall of this? *tr

The driver seat metal base has broken in 2 parts on both sides. the drivers seat is loose and i cant find any replacement.

The front drivers side and rear passengers side bolts on the frame of the driver's seat have pulled through the frame, causing a constant rocking and causing the seat to lean very far back. this is very unsafe. after searching for a replacement seat, i found that this is a very common problem on the 2001 jeep grand cherokee.

The drivers seat is broken. the break appears to be somewhere between the seat and the frame, probably at the brackets. this is both a safety issue (seat could break off in a collision) and a comfort issue (the seat is crooked, causing back issues and discomfort).

Drivers seat bracket failure for jeep grand cherokee 1999-2004. due to poor design the brackets which hold the seat to the floor board will break free and can cause seat to break free while driving. this is a common issue which the manufacture is aware of and chooses to do nothing. when the bracket fails the whole seet must be removed and the bracket replaced.

The driver's side seat is not securely anchored to the vehicle. upon inspection it is obvious the manufacturer used poor welding or has instituted a poor design to anchor the seat properly. the seat itself is still in good condition, however, it rocks unsafely and will not provide adequate protection in the event of an accident. apparentely this fault is well documented by other jeep owners as evidenced by the tesitmonials found at http://vlane.com/poll/30. the seat integrity was compromised by employees at jim click jeep in tucson, az, after i had the vehicle serviced for a transmission fluid change. i noticed it rocked unstably after they returned the vehicle to me and rather then address it with them immediately, i drove the vehicle off the lot since they had taken longer than promised to service my jeep and i was late for an appointment. when i called the service department later, they said it happens all the time to vehicles like mine, confirmed there was no recall to fix them, and they weren't liable for the repair.

Filing a common complaint related to a flaw in the manufacturing of the jeep grand cherokee front seats. most occur in the 1999-2004 models. the metal that attaches the seat to the floor is flimsy and has broken. it makes the seat wobbly and will lead to my legs hitting the steering wheel and possibly cause a wreck. this is a fatal flaw from jeep/chrysler.

2001 jeep grand cherokee limited 10 way power seat - twice failed. once at about 75000 miles and again at 130000 miles. driver's side seat frame broken on 2001 grand cherokee, causing sudden abrupt movement of the seat, and short term loss of vehicle control. fortunately, was able to regain control of vehicle without accident. to date, i have had to perform the following repairs to this seat: 1) weld lower seat frame twice due to metal fatique failure. poorly designed; too thin stock. 2) weld the seat back frame where it broke due to metal fatigue. again, too thin material. 3) seat heater shorted out, caused small burn area on the lower cushion. i repaired same. 4) both the back and bottom seat cushions are made of expanded foam rubber which has deteriated and torn in the seat frame area. this poorly designed seat is a serious safety defect, and there should be a mandatory recall. i have hit several websites recently and found literally hundreds of complaints on this very same issue. why has not the safety board required a recall? does someone have to die before action is taken?

On my 2001 jeep grand cherokee limited's driver side front seat, there are two metal peices that lift the seat up in the back. these two pieces have snapped off on me while driving down the road causing me to almost wreck my car. this not being bad enough, the back rest part of the seat twists to the right causing me to have to sit at an angle and making for a very akward ride. these things are not random things, they are happening alot with people who own these jeeps and i believe that chrysler should do something about it before alot of people are seriously hurt or killed!!

Front seat of 2001 jeep grand cherokee is unsafe. heard from numerous other jeep drivers that this is a problem with this model year. driving along and all of a sudden the chair breaks and becomes unsteady. causing me to have to try and pull of the road. the chair will now recline when you accelerate and flow forward upon breaking - which has its impact on gas/break pedals when applied.

I was backing up in a parking lot. the driver side seat snapped lose and i hit two cement baracades. badly denting my rear door. lucky there was not a person standing there, i was at a college. the seat had been rocking a bit. when i looked at it the seat mount the rear pivot point had completely broken off both sides. the mounts holding the seat to the mount were also broken. this seem to happen a lot and i could not fine a junk yard replacement.. dealers wanted $700-$1200 for the repair. i took the seat out and had it welded. i can no longer use the hoizontal or vertical seat ajustment but it tilts and goes back and forth. i have not tried to fix the back door yet.

Owner of 2001 jeep gr cherokee laredo. i wish to file this complaint about the driver's seat. started out with an annoying squeak and some popping on entrance, exit, acceleration, and braking of vehicle. within 1 mth of noticing this problem the front bolt broke away from the seat frame and metal then it went to the back right bolt. i have attempted to get this welded and was told it was too invoved, i tried searching the junk yards for a used seat and apparently these seats are hard to come by, and have also spoke with the dealership in regards to getting this fixed and i was quoted a price but told no guarantee with the repair and the part was on a backorder. to date i have not been able to find the replacement or fix causing me not to pass inspection (when the inspector got in to check something else he wound up in my son's car seat.). i have had to put wooden blocks underneath but it still rocks back and forth.

I have owned a 2001 jeep grand cherokee laredo for 7 years and it has been a good car for me. a year ago my front seat broke off of the support beam and it is made of metal. i only way 180 lbs and have taken pretty good care of the car. after researching this online i have come to find out that this has happened to a lot of jeeps and they used cheap metal to save money. i will be the first to say i love jeep but this is dangerous for anybody riding in one. i only hope they do not use this method in newer models. it is very dangerous riding around in a seat that is not hooked to the car correctly. i had a friend weld the the seat back to the support but it was only a temporary fix as it has broken again.

The frame holding the driver's seat is very flimsy and has broken in 3 of 4 places holding the seat. the 4th location has not yet broken all the way through but a crack has begun. the vehicle is not safely drivable and is parked until i can find replacement parts. many people have reported this same problem. why has nothing been done? the problem starts as a squeak, then a crack, then the seat is tilted and ultimately the breaks happen at all 4 corners of the seat frame. a crack at all 4 corners will allow the seat, and the driver, to fall back too far to reach the steering wheel and brakes. this is very dangerous.

My drivers side front seat on my jeep grand cherokee broke, we had it welded back twice, but the entire track and the back of the seat are broken. it's very unsafe to drive and apparently this is very common on these jeeps. i don't understand how jeep can make a vehicle with such an unsafe part. it really should be recalled. i know of a poll for this particular defect and 1703 people have signed that the same thing has happened to them.

Approximately 5 years ago, the heat stopped working on the passenger side of my 2001 jeep grand cherokee. then last year, the heat and a/c stopped working completely. this makes for very dangerous driving conditions as visibilty is greatly reduced at times. its too costly for me to repair myself. it appears that this is a problem for most of these vehicles and i can't understand why something hasn't been done about it. also, the passenger side seat heating element stopped working after it apparently shorted out, luckily, no fire occurred. and the hydraulics through out the vehicle have stopped working and i noticed this when first the hood came down on my head and then the rear window! i've also had to replace the engine and it was due to problems with the coolant/hydraulic fan...at a price tag of $4000.00...

2001 jgc driver seat is broken. when i took my jeep in to have rear axle worked on it came back with the driver seat rocking back to the right and forward to the left. the mechanic says he didn't do it but that they eventually wear out like that. i don't recall my seat rocking back and forth before i brought it to him. after checking with other jeep owners i have been told they have the same problem with the driver seat. it makes driving uncomfortable and i'm now noticing problems with my lower back and hip.

Driver seat has broken, causing me to sway side to side when turning. this seems to be a very common issue with this model of jeep, and could definitely lead to a major wreck. i just bought the car used. wish i'd have noticed this problem during the test drive.

The driver's side front seat in my 2001 jeep grand cherokee laredo failed, with the metal support track cracking and then breaking, leaving the seat nearly free. the seat had been loose for several months, since the time i purchased the vehicle in february of 2009. i had returned it to the dealer due to noise in the seat frame, and was told it was natural wear and tear and would not be repaired. i have since had the track welded to repair and reinforce the metal, but it does need a new track for any permanent repair, which chrysler estimates at $1,500. if i had been involved in an accident when this seat was wobbling, i believe it would have failed completely and would not have restrained me in the vehicle. this is a very dangerous safety issue, if not addressed by chrysler/jeep, who has been aware of this for many years in the grand cherokee, based on the number of online complaints i have seen in recent days. my mechanic also told me it was clear the seat track that is now in the vehicle was not original, and was a replacement part of the original, which also must have failed. *tr

The driver's seat frame failed. prior to investigating why the seat back wobbled and did not offer support while driving. i contacted the local jeep dealer where the unit was purchased. they told me i needed a new seat frame assembly. i asked if there were any complaints or recalls, they replied with none. the vehicle is primarily driven by my wife and has only 45,000 miles and change on it. the dealer told me the cost of the seat frame assembly would be about $1200 not including labor to remove the covering and replace the frame. etc. the dealer offered no financial assistance saying that the vehicle was out of warranty. i took the vehicle to a local repair shop and they stripped off the covering revealing a cracked bottom seat frame. they ordered a jeep bottom seat frame at a cost of $363.75 and charged me labor of $281.00 to strip off the covering, install the seat and recover accordingly. also, to compound the aforementioned neither the driver's side or passenger side height adjustments function. this is not a result of the seat frame as stated above. is there any assistance you can render in terms of reimbursement? i can provide photos of the failed seat frame assembly as well as copies of the monies paid to take care of the repair. ii have researched this problem extensively on the internet and there are volumes of similar complaints. a serious residual of this seat frame failure has resulted in the seat totally collapsing to the rear with a sudden stop or impact leaving the driver in a dangerous reclining position. it's unfortunate that perhaps not enough people who have experienced this problem may not have taken the time to report it to the proper agencies or authorities. please help before someone is hurt or killed. *tr thank you.

First of all, i am not the first person to have this complaint. my drivers seat is broken on my 2001 jeep grand cherokee laredo. upon research, i found that this problem was in no way unique to me. this is ridiculous!!! i demand a recall, or at least compensation for paying to have my seat replaced. if i were the only person with this problem, i would understand, but every person that i've talked to has experienced this exact same problem with this exact same seat. this is why people have problems with buying american cars. unless i get this issue resolved, rest assured that i will never ever buy an american car again. as far as i am concerned, i want this fixed. i will be writing my senators. *tr

My drivers side seat on my 2001 jeep grand cherokee laredo has broken. 3 of the 4 brackets which are attached to the seat frame have sheered. the result of this is that my seat is only attached to my car by one bracket, in an accident this bracket may not adequately hold the seat in place. when making a turn the seat shifts. this is a dangerous situation with the only remedy being buying a new seat, or making a do it yourself weld to reattach the seat to the seat frame or purchasing a new vehicle. in my investigation to see if i could get a replacement seat i found this site http://vlane.com/poll/30. here over 98% of the respondents have faced this similar problem. there look to be around 100 respondents to this question that was asked. to track down this site took a rather long time, and my concern is how under reported this situation may be. this problem has still not been repaired and honestly i cannot afford to buy a new vehicle. *tr

There are two problems with this model of jeep grand cherokee laredo. 1) the tail light socket in this model of jeeps constantly burns out. i have replaced this socket numerous times at $8.00 - $10.00 each and have kept all of the burned out sockets as evidence. when the socket burns out, the tail lights stop working once you turn the headlights on. my vehicle has automatic headlights and this truly causes a big problem. i've visited a jeep / chrysler junk yard in my area and checked each tail light socket. each socket is burned out like each of the sockets that i have in my possession. 2) the outside rail that connects the drivers seat to the risers breaks, converting the drivers seat to a rocking chair. i have spoken with the service and parts departments all of the jeep dealers in a 100 mile radius of zip code (20744) and was told that these issues are a common problem with jeeps from 1994 to 2004. i have also spoken with several friends as well as common strangers who i see with this same model jeep and have learned that they also have this problem and the below problems. i believe that this problems are a safety issue and warrant a safety recall. i have received two tickets on two separate occasions for the tail lights alone. i can understand having to change a light bulb every year or two but not the socket that the bulb plugs into. this is a serious defect that chrysler will not address. please help!*jb

I had owned my 2001 jeep grand cherokee laredo, which i had bought new from brenner motors in mechanicsburg, pa, for almost 4 years when all of a sudden and without incident of any kind the driver's seat came undone on the one side. i believe this to be due to faulty and/or defective construction. i am the primary driver and am 6'2 and approximately 200 pounds. i brought this matter to the attention of the dealership while the vehiccle was still under warranty but was advised that this defect would not be covered under the warranty. another jeep dealer (henry gay in laurel, maryland) told me it would cost approximately $450 to fix including parts and labor. i beleive a defect of this kind endangers not only the driver but any back seat occupants as well.

I own a 2001 jeep grand cherokee limited with 87,000 miles. the events leading up to the failure of the ventilation system were (1) rapid fogging of front windshield,(2) fogging of front passenger windows,(3) failure of passenger heat while still maintaining driver heat function, and (4) only cold air release on passenger side of jeep. consequently,(1) the windshield and front windows do not defog, and (2) no heat whatsoever comes from the passenger side floor and dashboard ventilation system. to correct this problem, a blend air door is necessary at a cost of approximately $1,200 inclusive of 7 hours of labor. according to the certified service department at the local jeep dealer and online forums, this has become a very common problem for 2000-2004 jeep grand cherokee limiteds with duel zone ventilation systems. *tr

2001 jeep grand cherokee= my vehicle should have been covered under the lemon laws of the us. equipment failures: - window regulators- replaced 2 - heated seats- both seats have the wires burnt in two in them; possible fire hazard...not covered in recall of a later year - blend doors broke- had to replace all three motors and doors - left turn signal does not function consistently - door lock system is failing: driver's door has quit locking; has to be done manually; back door behind the driver makes a squawking noise when you lock the doors, tailgate is not locking; alarm will go off if you open the door, but it is not locked. _constant small coolant leak. *tr

The consumer had the vehicle in the shop almost 10 times for repairs. the consumer argued that the power steering was out of order and she was unable to steer the vehicle in reverse. the vehicle had experienced other problems such as the drive pinion, heating pads, brake rotors, calipers, pads, power steering pump, the rear shock absorbers and rear sway bar links. the dealer was contacted about the problems no help was offered. it had appeared that there had been a recall issued for the grand cherokees built only from nov 22- dec 5 2000 for the power steering and the consumer missed it by a month, but the vehicle experienced the same problem as the recall that was issued. the consumer was very dissatisfied with the dealership. *ak *cb the vehicle also experienced three tire blowouts. the consumer was told the problem was caused by the gear box, there was a recall regarding the issue, however the consumers vehicle was not included in the recall. the front pinion seal leaked. *jb

The drivers side seat heater stopped working 6 months after i purchased the new vehicle. it took 7 months to get it replaced. wrong parts were ordered, then parts were back ordered, phone calls were not returned or ignored, and i had to bring my car in numerous time, missing work frequently. after changing dealerships for my warranty work, i finally got it replaced. however, i was concerned about the passenger seat heater failing in the future. i was told by the first dealer (i purchased the vehicle through) that they would replace both. however, when i went to the second dealer, they told me that it is unlikely that the passenger heater would fail because you do not use it as often. well, here it is 2 years later and my passenger heater is now not working...4000 miles after my warranty expired. quite convenient, i might add. this time it took two visits to the dealer and a un-returned phone call over 2 weeks to even find out a price for me. and of course, the date of delivery of the part is unknown. 2/3 winter seasons without a seat heater in my car is unacceptable. *la
