| Defect Summary | Certain passenger vehicles equipped with adjustable padels are being recalled in order to adjust the brake and accelerator pedals to a minimum of 50 mm of lateral separation. simultaneous application of both the brake and accelerator pedals could result in an increase in engine rpm. | |||||||||||||||
| Consequence Summary | This could result in a customer experiencing an unintended vehicle speed increase or a perceived unable to stop condition. | |||||||||||||||
| Corrective Summary | Owners will be instructed as to the proper way to set the position of the pedals and to take their vehicles to a dealer to have the spacing between the brake and accelerator pedals measured. if the spacing is found to be less than 50 mm, the dealer will adjust the pedals to increase the distance between them to greater than 50 mm. owner notification began october 28, 2002. owners who do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-866-436-7332. | |||||||||||||||

| Ford conducted a recall in march, 2001 to correct a defect affecting the brake light switch in my 2000 through early-2001 taurus and sable vehicles equipped with power adjustable pedals (recall 01v-078).rq03-008 was opened to investigate complaints concerning the remedy and scope of 01v-078.odi's analysis identified concerns with post-repair failures in recalled vehicles, failures in my 2001-02 vehicles with adjustable pedals that were not included in recall 01v-078, and failures in my 2000 vehicles with fixed pedals.(note: the manufacturer failure data in this resume includes all crashes and injuries, but the complaint information is limited to my 2001-02 vehicles that were not included in the scope of recall 01v-078.)on march 1, 2004, ford notified nhtsa of a safety defect in my 2000 through early-2003 taurus and sable vehicles equipped with adjustable pedals and my 2000 subject vehicles equipped with fixed pedals (recall 04v-106).the notification identified three factors contributing to brake light circuit failures:(1) continuing grease contamination issues that prompted 01v-078; (2) misalignment of the booster rod pin and the brake light switch; and (3) wire assembly fatigue.the first two conditions were limited to vehicles with adjustable pedals and the latter condition affected vehicles with fixed pedals.ford will instruct owners to bring their vehicles to a dealer to have the brake light switch and associated wiring replaced with a re-designed brake light switch and wiring assembly. | ||||||

| Recall 02s40 did not address my problem. the dealer has inspected the brake pedal and released the vehicle as being ok. my problem is excessive brake pedal travel (more than 2.5 inches when depressed). when brakes are appllied the pedal level is more than 1/2 inch beyond the gas pedal level. the problem is not a matter of the two pedals. it is a situation of too much brake pedal travel. a shorter stroke in the brake system would correct the problem. dt | |||

| 2000 mercury sable with adjustable brake and gas pedals was recalled for spacing issue. told on recall no adjustment needed. had bad crash. after crash told two more times adjustment not needed. this car has a brake pedal that wobbles side to side 7 mm and a gas pedal that wobbles side to side 1 cm. odi in washington told me that as brake and gas pedal unit is brought forward the 3 inch distance for a shorter person the side to side wobble of brake pedal becomes worse causing you to hit the gas. they also said adjustment should have been made on this car. ford refuses to acknowledge problem and to do anything about it. this vehicle is very, very dangerous to drive. | |||

| Upon braking to a stop, my wife and i each had several incidences of hitting the brake pedal and gas pedal simoultaneouly causing car to accelerate instead of stopping. the cure is to have the brakes engage at a higher point so that the foot is suffeciently above the gas pedal as is the case with my 1988, bmw 325i. of course, separating the two pedals would also help. fortunately, only one incident caused a minor accident with neglible damage. a ford engineer has reported that all brake operations are normal on my car. it seems to me that design standards should be employed in the location of the brake pedal to the gas pedal. ford also reported that here has never been a complaint regarding a similar situation. is this true? ford also informed me that there is no up / down adustment factor in the relation to when the brakes engage. the car has the adustible gas and brake pedal assembly that adjusts to allow petite drivers to sit further from the steering wheel for air bag deployment safety. this movement could also contribute to the problem because. unconsciouly, the position of the brake pad my not be in remembered after the brake pads have been moved.*ak | |||

| I have now had to have the brake light switch on my car replaced twice. on july 23, 2002 while on vacation in the adirondack mountains the brake lights were stuck on. i had to drive over 100 miles with the brake lights on to have it repaired. this morning (9/18/02) on my way to drop off my children at school, a passenger in another vehicle flagged me down and told me i had no brake lights. another trip to the dealer and the brake light switch was replaced again. there is obviously something wrong with this part. thank you.*ak | |||

| Left out of driveway went two blocks parked car front of friends house, two hours later i proceeded to leave. started the car applied my brake pedal and got ready to shift in gear when it didn't move even the button on the side wouldn't go in, turned the car off and called for a towing truck. towing truck came and said that it might be some switch on the brake system because he towed at least 4 that same week for the same problem. also the brakes lights will not come on . this poses as a danger because if a person is driving and you can't take it out of drive the only thing you would be able to do is stop the car with the brakes and keep holding the brake until you get help you can only hold the brakes for so long.*ak | |||
