Defect SummaryOn certain passenger vehicles, the circuit board for the crank position sensor or cam position sensor may have an improper solder joint due to solder deformation caused by heat stress accelerated by the existence of flux residue during the soldering process.
Consequence SummaryThis could cause the service engine soon warning light to come on, create a no start condition, cause reduced engine power, or cause the engine to stop running without warning during vehicle operation, which could result in a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the crank position sensors. camshaft position sensor(s), and in some cases, the variable timing control sensor(s). vehicles involved in a previous recall campaign, 01v357, are also included in this new campaign. the replacement sensors used in that campaign are also affected. owner notification began on december 22, 2003. owners should contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261 or infiniti at 1-800-662-6200.

Defect SummaryOn certain passenger vehicles equipped with a 2.5l engine, the crankshaft position sensor can overheat causing a brief interruption in the signal output from the sensor.
Consequence SummaryIf the interruption in the signal from the crankshaft position sensor is so brief that the electronic control module (ecm) logic does not have time to diagnose the condition, the engine may stop running without warning while the vehicle is driven at a low speed increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will reprogram the ecm free of charge. certain my 2006 altimas which have been previously remedied under recall campaign 06v223 (nissan r0606) are not included in this recall since the reprogramming for 06v223 also included this reprogramming. the recall began on december 31, 2007. owners may contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

Defect SummaryOn certain vehicles equipped with the 2.5 liter engine, the exhaust pipe hanger pin may catch debris from the road that could be ignited by contact with the main catalyst. also on 2002 altima and sentra vehicles, certain engine operating conditions may cause the pre-catalyst to overheat and damage the catalyst substrate.
Consequence SummaryEither of these two conditions could result in a fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will remove the protruding portion of the exhaust pipe hanger pin. in addition to the corrective action, in order to reduce the risk of fire in the event of poor or improper maintenance that could result in oil spillage, heat shield(s) will be installed on the pre-catalyst and exhaust tube. owner notification began on july 28, 2003. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261. nissan recall nos. r3007, r3014, r3015, r3016, r3017. also on 2002 altima and sentra vehicles, certain engine operating conditions may cause the pre-catalyst to overheat and damage the catalyst substrate. if substrate particles enter the combustion chamber, they could score the cylinder walls, resulting in increased oil consumption. if the engine oil level is not checked on a periodic basis and drops below the low level, and the driver continues to operate the vehicle ignoring noticeable engine noise, engine damage may occur which could result in a fire. the pre-catalyst will be tested to ensure it is working properly and replaced if necessary. if damage is found inside the pre-catalyst, it will be necessary to replace the engine.

I began to have trouble with my car a couple of weeks ago. i have been going through a quart of oil a day and a tank of gas in a few days. i took it to my mechanic and he found out there is a recall for my vehicle. i was never notified of this recall. i was in the marines and was stationed at several different bases. my mother?s address was also used by nissan but she never received any information on the recall. i contacted the nissan dealer in norfolk ne. he told me i had to wait two weeks for them to look at it. the people i dealt with were rude and unprofessional and acted like i was an inconvenience. i did not have another vehicle and i am in school and have work so i contacted nissan usa. after several phone calls i was able to get an appointment in sioux city ia. i had to have my vehicle towed at my expense to sioux city. they looked at my car and found out that there were shreds of metal in the engine and the engine needs to be replaced. they stated they were not going to replace the engine. they stated i have to pay for it to be replaced. in the recall they said it would be replaced at nissans expense, a tow if necessary would be paid and a rental vehicle would be provided. none of this has happened. i would like assistance with this issue because the engine should be replaced by nissan. i told them what was wrong and my mechanic called and told them as well. they have still are not willing to pay for the engine. *tr

While driving my 2002 nissan sentra it shuts off no matter the speed now. started only when i was at a stop light, sign,or going at a slow speed. this has been happening for 3 years, have have the mass air flow sensor changed, fuel filter, and still stopping. also the oil dip stick keep breaking off. most recent sept 5, 2010 now car won't start.

 1. the engine stopped running without warning while the vehicle was driven. it could have caused a crash. i couldn't start the engine until the engine was cooled off. 2. it occurred once, but it is strongly believed to be related to a previous campaign (nhtsa campaign id number: 07v527000 and 06v223) the condition, events and the consequences are the same. 3. a mechanic fixed the condition by replacing the crank position sensor, but i am not sure the vehicle is in fair condition. air flow meter was also replaced although it is not strongly correlated with the i have contacted the nissan usa and a dealer (darcars nissan), but i was told that there is no campaign for my vehicle.

Our 2002 1.3l engine nissan sentra shut off while driving. this left the car uncontrollable and unresponsive. power steering was impaired and safe operation of the vehicle was compromised. we took the car to the dealership and the ecm crankshaft sensor was identified as mis-reading the condition of the car. it turns out that this incident is identical to the failure of the 2002 2.5l nissan sentra crankshaft sensor under recall 07v527000. our car is not covered under this recall, though the part, system, and failure are the same. this issue will be fixed at my expense initially, but this issue could cause many safety issues and should be addressed immediately by the manufacturer. *tr

I am the owner of a 2002 nissan sentra. the dipstick broke in the ordinary course of standard maintenance of the oil in the car and the broken dipstick fell in, resulting in a $250-$300 repair (to retrieve the dipstick from the engine and replace the dipstick). the dipstick is clearly defective, as a brief internet search reveals hundreds of nissan sentra owner complaints regarding this exact problem, including numerous complaints on the nhtsa websiter (over several model years). this dipstick, with its flimsy plastic part, is clearly not suitable for its intended purpose and can ultimately result in a dangerous engine failure. nissan is trying to avoid responsibility for the problem by saying that they are not responsible because, in my case, the dipstick broke when it was being handled by an independent service station, rather than by nissan service. this response is absurd since this is not an isolated episode and since dipsticks are meant to be used in gas stations and in car owners' own garages and driveways. nobody takes their car back to the car manufacturer to check the oil. that is like saying that if the gas tank is defective, nissan will not cover the repair because gas was put in the car at a gas station instead of at a nissan dealer. apparently, even jiffy lube has had numerous problems with nissan on this front as well. it was necessary for us to proceed with the repair immediately and at our own expense, since the broken dipstick in the engine was obstructing the entry of a new dipstick and also distorting the measurement of the oil. thus, it was impossible to know if the car needed oil, and running the car with insufficient oil would have further damaged the engine. this could ultimately result in engine failure and an accident. we had the dipstick repair done at a local nissan dealer and are seeking reimbursement for the repair (but, as stated above, nissan has refused to reimburse us). thank you for your attention to this matter. *tr

Upon noticing an unusual smell coming from my car i opened my hood to remove the oil dipstick only to find that the plastic ring had melted away from the dipstick. the dipstick was now stuck and after about an hour i was able to remove it because of the numerous suggestions, which i found online in order to avoid a mechanic fee of more than $150.00 to remove it. this seems to be a common problem with nissan sentra according to the many blogs found on the web simply by typing nissan broken oil dipstick. i was given a defective part, time wasted trying to remove the dipstick and had to incur the cost to replace the part, only to be given the same type of dipstick with a plastic handle. *tr

My 2002 nissan sentra w/ 1.8 engine started dying at low speeds. my mechanic said it was a known defect of the camshaft position sensor & a recall was issued for the 2.5l engine, but not for my 1.8l engine. it cost me $408 to fix. here is the 2002 nissan sentra defect summary: on certain passenger vehicles equipped with a 2.5l engine, the crankshaft position sensor can overheat causing a brief interruption in the signal output from the sensor. defect consequence: if the interruption in the signal from the crankshaft position sensor is so brief that the electronic control module (ecm) logic does not have time to diagnose the condition, the engine may stop running without warning while the vehicle is driven at a low speed increasing the risk of a crash. *tr

The dipstick on my nissan sentra had a plastic head. twice, the dipstick has been broken by a serviceman changing the oil. he simple pulls it out and the plastic head comes off, leaving the stick in the tube. nissan charged me $168 dollars four years ago to replace the tube and dipstick. now it has happened again. the heat is too much for the plastic, making it brittle. because this has happened twice, and i've read of hundreds of similar complaints on consumer websites, this should be a recall item. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 nissan sentra. while driving 20 mph, the vehicle stalled. through online research, the contact discovered numerous recalls on the vehicle with the same failure that he was experiencing. the manufacturer stated that his vin was not included in any of the recalls; therefore, the contact would not be reimbursed for any of the repairs related to those recalls. the contact feels that his vehicle should be included in the recalls since he is experiencing the same failures. the vin and recall numbers were unavailable. the failure mileage was 70,000 and current mileage was 71,000.

Hi, my name is clarence mabane. i have a complaint/recommendation about the manner in which a vehicle recall is being handled/performed. i am the owner of a 2002 nissan sentra se-r spec v. this vehicle has/had a recall in place to fix a condition that would lead to unrepairable engine failure. the condition you may be aware of as a pre-cat (catalytic converter located on the exhaust manifold in addition to the main one) failure condition. basically unburned fuel is burned in the pre-cat resulting in its disintegration. it is then sucked into the engine causing cylinder wall damage. this condition results in the engine burning excessive amounts of oil, a further degrade in compression over time and overall engine failure before it should expire under normal conditions. this situation happened to me and i was notified in any manor at any time about any recall even during service for the recalled item. this repair was in excess of a thousand dollars. at which time i was told nothing about the particles being sucked into my engine causing my the engine wear which caused the oil condition. at the very least i should have been advised of the recall at the time of repair and of my oil being contaminated. instead i was told it would be fine to drive 100+ miles to my local nissan dealership. it would of great help is you could look into this matter or make recommendations on how else this would be best handled? *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 nissan sentra. when the contact purchased the vehicle, he had the oil consumption of the fuel system inspected. the mechanic informed him that the vehicle was burning large amounts of oil, causing the piston rings to wear down. he was also informed of a recall with this identical failure, which stated that they were supposed to replace the parts as well as install a catalyst. the contact called the dealer to see if he could have this repaired under the recall, but they stated that his vin was excluded from the recall. the failure mileage was 131,000. updated 5/20/08 *cn updated 05/20/08

My vehicle would cut off while driving. i took it to a nissan dealership to have the recalls r3022 (crank position sensor) and the inside lining of the ecm box removed. because of the damage done to the ecm box from the lining by ecm box has to be unjustly fixed at my own expense. *tr

Oil dip stick broke on 2002 nissan sentra. with only about 60,000 miles on the nissan sentra, the plastic oil dip stick broke off inside the tube. the vehicle was taken to a nissan dealer for repairs at a an out outrageous cost of $380.63. checking the internet, i found numerous complaints for the same problem. it surely appears to be a design flaw with the dip stick and nissan should initiate a recall to replace existing oil sticks made of plastic. additional, nissan should reimburse the owners who have already paid for this repair. *tr

The dipstick cap on my 2002 nissan sentra gxe is plastic. due to this and the normal heating and cooling of the engine, it has broken away from the dipstick and the dipstick is stuck down in the dipstick tube. to get this out and replace it, the dealerships and repair garages want $100-200+ dollars. this i have learned is a common defect among most cars of this make and model. *tr

Vehicle(2002 nissan sentra gxe) becomes rough and the engine stop intermittently while driving the vehicle. taken the vehicle to the dealership, the ecm (engine control module) was detected to be bad. it was replaced at a cost of $95.00. the vehicle odometer was showing about 47,000 miles. talked to the nissan manufacturer and i was told that all recalls were already done on this vehicle on march 24th, 2004 at stevens creek nissan. this included rectifying the defects related to ecm. however the ecm became bad again. there may be defects which have not come to the review. please help to identify the defects and make the vehicle safe on the road.*jb

At 6:30 am, i was driving, trying to defrost the windows with the defroster at a light and the car started a jerking motion and overheated. i parked the car at family member's residence. i took the car to the dealer and was told that the engine needed to be replaced; however, the replacement was covered under the warranty. nissan needed to be contacted and they were. my case was in the warranty department for 3.5 weeks, mean while i was without transportation i wasn't approved to have a vehicle supplied by nissan. nissan made a decision not to replace the engine in my 4 year old car that received regular maintenance; but to replace the cylinder head gaskets (which from what i am told is a temporary fix). this is because i am at 58,000 miles and my warranty is up at 60,000 miles. beware of nissan and their warranties. *jb

Early march, i noticed on consumer reports website that there were recalls associated with my 2002 nissan sentra. engine sensors. nissan did not send me a recall notice even though they had my name and address. i registered the car when i bought it used. march 16 2006 my nissan had 115754 kms on it when i took it into nissan victoria for the recalls. they replaced the crankshaft/camshaft position sensors (3 in total) recall r86. removed ecm case holder foam r87. june 20, 2006 i was heading to the highway when my engine started racing and jerking, i drove it home. the car died and i had it towed to an automotive shop around the corner from my house. i was so lucky i wasn't going down the highway with lots of traffic! the mechanic came to the conclusion fairly quickly that it might be the computer and he called the nissan dealership. they told him that they had no problems with the computers. i rented a car in the meantime to get to work. the mechanic got a used computer from the auto wrecker and the car started right up. apparently the foam on the ecm damaged the computer (some kind of gas-fumes) while it was curing. this is why nissan removed the foam. maybe they are trying to avoid another recall like for the sensors...too late... i have since discovered that a lot of people have had the same problem with the ecm. i don't trust the used ecm i have in the car because i don't know anything about it. but i feel that nissan should either rebuild or give me a new computer. if this happens at 123,000 kms what can i expect further down the road? i have the old computer, not sure what to do with it. *jb

When my 2002 sentra was brought into habberstad nissan for a routine oil change, i was informed that the oil dip stick was broken and the bottom was stuck in the bottom. i was told by nissan that the oil pan had to be removed to get it out and that it would cost $290.00. i have an extended warranty and was also told that this was not covered under the warranty. the service person also mentioned that he has seen this problem on several 2002 sentras, however nissan has not acknowledged that this is a problem with the car. i have since seen several complaints regarding this same problem with the 2002 model. if anything, this should be covered under nissan's warranty and should probably be included as a recall for this problem. nissan should resolve this problem at no cost to the consumer since there is obviously a problem with the plastic dipstick breaking apart.*jb

2002 nissan sentra, 73000 miles. i bought the car used-- and have pumped out less than 800 miles before this problem happened to me. basically, the car stalls out, has low acceleration before parking. here's the kicker--- this problem happens every week... but not everyday. i took this car to the bfit a local car university-- who looked at the car inside and out... they noted that i should replace the mast air head for $600 which i did. but less than a day later-- same problem.. the car stalls out. i decided then i needed to take it to nissan dealership. they told me the same thing... i need a new mast-head! i told them i have a new masthead-- and they said they will just clear out the computer codes. guess what? a week later the car stalled in the middle of downtown boston traffic. the beauty of the problem, the problem goes away if you turn off and turn back the machine on. i took it back to the dealership and at this point, they do not know what is wrong with it as they kept it the dealership for 1 and a half weeks. but i know the problem: http://www.activetuning.com/blog2/2006/02/28/nissan-altima-crank-sensor-recall-being-reviewed/ help== a national recall must occur before someone gets hurt. *tr

Hello, thank you for taking the time to read this e mail, it started with a simple oil change for my sister nissan sentra, i had just finished taking the used oil out and replacing a new oil filter, i went for the dip stick, and it broke, my day was already bad and it went to worst. the failure of the poorly design dipstick, its plastic handle, broke and the dipstick metal went in, i have tried players, metal stick with no luck, i went to the internet and found others in the same boat as me, talking about how at an oil change place or house when the dipstick broke, i have search the internet for hints and advice to how to get the piece out, many people put that it takes $210 dollars to fix, i don't have that kind of money to be using it on detailed areas of my car i haven't been able to do much, it to late, i have waited for my brother in law to help me out but the sun has set and its real cold i write this e mail so that nissan cars don't get such a bad reputation, http://www.broomeman.com/mt/archives/001156.html, is a internet source you may or may not know, some people say that they well change to honda, honda is one of the most roomiest cars i have every been in, my sister car is a 02 nissan sentra, i thank you once more for your time in hopes that something might be done to help nissan owners feel that they did get their moneys worth buying a nissan, thank you. *nm

Went to get an oil change today and the mechanic pulled the dipstick and discovered that the half of the plastic handle that the dipstick was attached to had broken off. we luckily were able to remove the dipstick from home with a pencil and tape, however this signifies a more common problem that this vehicle is made of shotty parts. i had to get a tune-up at 25,000 miles, my battery has corrosion problems that have been communicated multiple times to the dealer with no fix, and my computer died at 40,000 miles and had to be replaced. i will now have to purchase a dipstick since they used a shotty plastic part that corroded and broke. this seems to be a very common problem. it may not be a safety hazard, however, the manufacture needs to be held liable. here is a link to many other nissan consumers who have had this same problem: http://www.broomeman.com/mt/archives/001156.html. *nm

In april of 2005 check engine light went on. brought car to my mechanic and codes came up for my oxygen sensors. when sensors were replaced the codes would not go away and check engine light would not come off. he replaced them again and no change. in october 2005 my car stalled unexpectedly and after starting it up drove so bad i cannot drive car anymore. brought car to dealer and would not explain what the problem was but did take care of all recalls (i never received recall info-found it online myself). my car still was running terrible so i brought it to my mechanic. a code came up for throttle sensor not to mention 5 other codes. he replaced throttle sensor and no difference in how car runs. car now will stall in the middle of driving. i will not drive car for fear of an accident! nick, a regional specialist said nissan will not look at car free of charge even though i have spent over $1500 on these problems. my own mechanic has done more for me than a company who says they are their toughest critic. i decided to look up info online and found 5 different complaints very similar to mine where the ecm was involved on this website. the company who manufactured ecm's to nissan states on their web page that ecm's installed in cars they provided ecm's to from 1989-2003 had a higher rate of malfunction. this website also explained what can happen when your ecm fails- 1. warning light remains on; 2. nonsense fault codes show up when reader is connected; 3. vehicle breakdown w/o warning; 4. erratic idle, stall at traffic/poor running & starting problems. these are just a few but how interesting these all are happening to my car. i believe 2002 nissan sentra's probably have an even higher rate of failure because of the recall to the ecm case holder. i believe this may cause problems to the ecm. nissan should care enough about their customer and a human life to replace ecm's. before a serious injury occurs or worse, if that hasn't happened yet. *nm

Yesterday while driving my 2002 nissan sentra my vehicle stalled while driving at approx. 40 mph. luckily there was little traffic and i was able to manuever into a parking lot after crossing 3 lanes. the car would not restart. after having it towed to the nissan dealer they said the problem was the crankshft position sensor. after doing some research on the web i noticed a recall for the same issue on the 2000 nissan sentra (nhtsa campaign id number: 01v357000). you would think this issue would have been corrected after 2 model years.*ak

2002 nissan sentra gxe would stall while driving after braking at high speeds exiting off highway (60-70 mph). the vehicle would shake and the service engine soon light would display on the dashboard. the first time occurred at 2 weeks after i purchased the vehicle new with only 600 miles on it! this has occurred over 3 times. the 3rd time resulted in an accident. the nissan dealership has serviced the vehicle and stated that they could not duplicate the problem. the nissan consumer affairs and nissan arbitration has tested the vehicle and stated that they could not duplicate the problem. this model seems to have the same problems in 2000 and 2001. is it not obvious that nissan has a continuous problem with this model. *la

My car suddenly stalls and i have reduced engine power. the car tends to stall more after it rains and it could stall for weeks or months and than it will stop but it is getting progressively worse. i have taken for repairs three times and they were unable to find anything wrong with the car. i see there are recalls for similar problems in the 2001 & 2003 nissan sentra due to a defective crank sensor. i am not sure of the exact date this problem started but i have been experiencing this engine failing problem on and off for sometime. *tr

After purchasing a nissan sentra gxe 2002 -- about 1 month later the service engine light came on and i had to pay almost 300 dollars to replace the radiator thermostat--of course this repair and the next was not covered by the warranty that i purchased--after 5 months both engine belts had to be replaced--another 175 bucks. now i hear a suspicious creaking from the rear end--i can't wait to find out what that is. oh--i almost forgot--one day after taking the car home i had to repair a rear tire and the paint is peeling and fading. *jb
