Defect SummarySome passenger vehicles equipped with 4.0l v8 engines have a condition in which the nylon tubing used in the fuel rail construction may degrade and crack. additionally, the 1995 model year uses a unique underhood fuel return line that may crack. cracking of the fuel rail or return line tubing can result in a fuel leak into the engine compartment.
Consequence SummaryFuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the engine fuel rail with a new stainless steel fuel rail. dealers will also install a revised chassis fuel return line. the recall began on june 2, 2004, for 1996-1997 oldsmobile aurora vehicles. owners of 1995 cadillacs and 1996-1997 oldsmobile aurora were sent letters on august 6, 2004. additional letters to owners will be forthcoming. owners should contact oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537.

The fuel rail assemblies used in the subject vehicles were manufactured by dana.the fuel rail jumper tubes were made of monolayer nylon 12 (pa12).in model year (my) 1998, the jumper tube material was changed from pa12 to m-bond (a multi-layer ptfe/pa12).in addition, all service parts produced since the end of production 1997 use the m-bond jumper tubes. material analysis performed by dana on failed fuel rails showed that the mono-layer nylon 12 jumper tubes are susceptible to environmental stress cracking (esc).gm believes the esc is a result of heat, time, alcohol blended fuel, fuel pressure cycling, and designed in stress. eight of the gm complaints are duplicative of odi complaints.odi has received 77 of it's 123 complaints in the past 12 months.fuel rail part sales over the last three years range from 3.0 percent of production for the my 1997 cadillac vehicles to 13.1 percent for the my 1995 auroras.at least one of the fire incidents occured while the vehicle was parked within a garage attached to the consumers home.the fire resulted in damage to the dwelling as well as the total loss of the vehicle.this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis.

Fuel return line: foul smell in car, took to emich olds but failed to correct. returned due to continued smell, finally diagnosed and repaired leak. fuel rail/fuel regulator: strong, sickening fumes entered car interior, then car lost power and barely maintained 20mph on way home. after i parked in my driveway, a large quantity of gasoline leaked onto the driveway. i had to call the fire department to assess safety before towing car for repair. after repair was made, strong gasoline fumes remained in engine compartment and continued seeping into car. emich was finally able to apply a cleaning treatment to remove smell. crankcase seal: repair was done incorrectly by emich olds, had to be repeated. note: there were a large number of other mechanical repairs needed on this car, particularly in the last year, too many to report here. many required more than one trip to emich to diagnose/repair. this car is a lemon!!!this car is a lemon!!!, had to be repeated a second time by emich olds. driveway at home, a large. *ak

This malfunction was identified by the vehicle stalling in traffic numerous times. the engine would stop without warning or indication of a problem and was also intermittent. sometimes the engine would restart and run for a short period and sometimes it would run without incident for several days. after several days of trying to duplicate this malfunction, king oldsmobile, 1399 s. federal highway, deerfield beach, fl 33441, ph: 954 574-1427,the vehicle stalled. they determined the fuel pump to be the cause of the problem. upon removal of the fuel pump, they found frayed wiring and evidence of arcing at an electrical connector on the fuel pump. this pump is located in the fuel tank. (i have the old fuel pump if needed for inspection) the vehicle has been performing without incident since repaired. i called oldsmobile custormer service and informed them of this problem. i told them i felt that this was a safety concern as well as a possible problem area, since the nhtsa website had three similar reported malfunctions, odi id 866437, 780417, 850386. they recorded this information, however , i was not satisfied that this would be investigated. this appears not to be an isolated case. my file number at oldsmobile is 00313584, customer service ph: 1-800-442-6537. *ak

Vehicle would not start on the first try, but would always start on the second try. also noticed a gasoline odor while idling and driving at slow speeds. the odor progressively got stronger until a pinhole leak was discovered in one of the plastic fuel lines attached to the fuel rail. when i called oldsmobile about this they said that there were no open recalls on this and that i would be responsible to pay for a proper diagnosis (and of course repair) at a gm dealership. the ironic thing is that i had previously been contacted by gm (about two years ago) about the fuel rail recall and took the car in to have the fuel rail replaced even though now oldsmobile is saying that the recall never effected my vin. *tr

When stopped to refuel, the outside tank would not open, even with the trunk fuel door release. there was something burning, my husband pulled back the trunk liner and found a part r4060 also stamped 52713 and electrical part best guess 5044678 as it is partly melted. the defective part is connected to the fuel line. we have taken are car in for the recalls relating to the fuel line within the past year. this could have easily caused a fuel related explosion at the time of fueling or after it was sat in our garage. requesting investigation, we disconnected the half melted part which exposes the inside materials. we went to the recall website to check if this was a part that should have been replaced, not clear. *jb
