| EA04035 | GENERAL MOTORS CORP. | 12/22/2004 | 10/20/2005 | FRONT TURN SIGNAL/DRL FAILURE | ||
| The combination front turn signal/drl in my 2003 saturn ion coupes experienced significant early-life failures due to various bulb quality issues due to inadequate design and manufacture.this problem trend appears to have disappeared after the fall of 2003.the change of lead wire material near the start of my 2004 vehicle production appears to have reduced the failure rate for my 2004 saturn ion coupes.although operating temperatures in the subject vehicles' lamp assemblies are below the socket material maximum temperature specification, they are only slightly below the specification.in december 2004, gm reduced the voltage to the lamp assembly in order to reduce the temperature in the assembly of the subject vehicles.warranty claims on the subject vehicles do not indicate an increasing trend over time.warranty claim rate of subject vehicles (excluding early my 2003 claims) is not significantly higher than other gm vehicles that use combination turn signal/drls.a safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time.further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances.see attached summary report. | ||||||
| PE04061 | GENERAL MOTORS CORP. | 08/17/2004 | 12/22/2004 | FRONT TURN SIGNAL/DRL FAILURE | 04V547000 | |
| On november 16, 2004, gm notified nhtsa that it will conduct a safety recall of 178,798 model year (my) 2003 and 2004 saturn ion sedan vehicles for inoperative front turn signal/drl bulbs.gm stated that temperatures in the lamp assembly exceed the material specification for the bulb sockets and bulb base sleeves, which cause deformation.the deformed sockets can cause loss of bulb and socket contact.the deformed sleeves can cause stress cracks to form on the bulb that can lead to premature bulb failure.the recall remedy is to replace the front turn signal/drl bulbs and inspect for voltage-reducing jumper (which reduces temperature in lamp assembly) and add if not present.see nhtsa recall no. 04v547 for details.the bulbs for the turn signal/drl in the saturn ion sedan and ion coupe are identical in design and made by the same supplier.but the turn signal/drl sockets, wiring and housing are different in design for the sedan and coupe, and were made by different suppliers.gm's data shows a lower operating temperature for the coupe's lamp assembly that does not exceed the material specification for the bulb socket and the bulb base sleeve.complaint and warranty rate is also lower for the coupe.however, gm's warranty data shows a continuing trend for the coupe.this preliminary evaluation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea04-035) for further investigation of the my 2003 and 2004 saturn ion coupe vehicles. | ||||||

| Passenger side front turn signal stops working for a week, then works, then quits again for a few days and then works again. saturn dealer says this vehicle is not included on the recall - it appears to be the same problem as recall campaign 04v657000 - nhtsa action number pe04061. they said any review/repair would be at my expense. *tr | |||

| In 2005 a recall was issued for the 2004 saturn ion front headlamps. i had the recalled parts replaced. for the past few months my left blinker has gone out about five times. i have replaced bulbs, had the dealer replace the sockets, and am now about to have the wiring harness replaced. the dealer said that no one else has had this problem. however, i have been researching the problem and have found hundreds of the same occurrences online and have seen other saturn ions around town with the same blinker out. i believe this problem is not normal wear and tear. i believe it is directly related to the 2005 recall. *tr | |||

| By 3500 miles (after 1500mi when we could have returned it), the front passenger turn signal burnt out. the car was also sputtering when we started the engine. the mechanic found a cracked head, that we were told was probably present when we purchased the car; had we known we would've returned the car. we were given a rental car, but had to drive 45 min one way to get to saturn of green bay. within a month, the front driver turn signal had burnt out. the wiring was replaced while we waited 2 hrs with our 3 year old. we had to drive 1 hr 1way to saturn of appleton for repairs. in aug 2004, the car was making a noise when we turned onto a steep grade. in mi for vacation, we had to drive over 1 hr 1way to saturn of troy; the swaybar and mounting brackets had to be fixed. we waited for over 2 hrs with our son while it was fixed. in sept 2004, the front passenger side turn signal had to replace the resistor. we drove 1 hr 1 way for the repair, and had to wait 2 hrs with our son. we had asked about the cruise making a funny noise, but it was checked and we were told it was fine. in april 2005, the cruise stopped working and had to be fixed. it took over a week for the part to come in, and almost 2 weeks for it to be repaired at saturn of green bay. i had to go to the dealer 30 minutes early, be driven over to my school where i teach, walk to my second school i teach at, and wait for a driver to pick me up (20-40 min past when i was done for the day). despite everything we've been through with a new car that should need minimal care at this point, we've been basically told that we should take the $2600 hit to buy a new car while the dealer breaks even. this is poor salesmanship, and we will not be purchasing saturn products any longer. | |||

| After 5 years my 2004 saturn ion will not start when the temperature is below +10f. there is power ( new battery ) and no fuel issue ( clean fuel system and filter ), but after 10 to 15 minutes and a couple of hesitant engine turns, it starts. no one needs an unreliable vehicle where winter temps last several months. after replacing the anti-sway bar, both headlight assemblies as well as other annoying problems ( instrument lights out, cabin fan noisy ) i will never ever buy another saturn . i took the problem ( out of warranty of course ) to saturn of rochester and was told it was a faulty ignition switch, a common problem for this make and model year. since it is not a safety issue, no recall was issued and i would have to pay at least $275 unless something else came up. being late for work ( public safety and volunteer fireman ) or my wife and children is not an option for me. please force gm to make the recall on this ignition part for the financially stressed new york consumers. thank you. *tr | |||

| I heard about a recall from a year 2007-2008 or so ago for saturn, turn signal. at the time the turn signal was working, but i took it to saturn and inquired about it but they said it was fine. later on i turn signal went out on side. i replaced it but noticed that has not been working for almost a year. i took to saturn and one man told me that the recall expired! then i took it back to get it fixed at another man said that the recall has not expired, but it is not my vin number. i paid about 60 dollars on saturn, and guess what they did? they charged me all that money to tighten up the bulb and put some grease on it. i drove away and went down the street and it was not working. i was upset, because i felt like they did nothing. i took it back a few minutes later, then they said they had to clean the area and saw some burnt wire and they put another bulb on. they assured me again that it was fixed. i drove down the street and took it back again. the problem is not fixed, and i want my money back. they charged my all that money to simply screw the light bulb. i told them over and over again that it was not the light bulb. it was the wiring because they light bulb would work one day and not the next. i have been blessed to not have been stopped by the police for this problem. it has been this way for a year. the put down i declined maintenance(s). as well as the 60,000 maintenance. i only declined the 60,000 maintenance, but i don't know what other maintenance they were talking about because none was offered. saturn did non even explain to me what they were going to do to my car. my car has defects in it and because it was not a certain vin number they did not fix it. what can i do? *tr | |||

| I have a 2004 saturn ion and there was recall (04v547000) in this vehicle in regards to defective turn signals. approximately 3 weeks ago i contacted saturn and was told that there was never a recall on this item. i researched this further and called saturn again and now was told that there was a recall and the work has been done to the vehicle before i bought it. i have also read articles and people were stating that they had to have the work done a few times because what was done to the vehicle didn't fix the problem. saturn is now telling me that they cant do anything about the defect and that i would have to pay for the work. *jb | |||
