The first time it went off was when we were entering a highway. the electric alarm went off and then i found the steering was not working. it was dangerous and very hard to pull over when cars behind are accelerating to get into the highway traffic. after a restart, everything seemed okay. then on our way back home the same thing happened for 4 or 5 times. we had to drive in the right lane at a low speed to give ourselves enough space for safty.

Key can get stuck in ignition of saturn ion cars. engine will shut down but key will not eject from ignition. to release key it is required to pop open ignition column and press compression switch to release key. this also causes interior lights to turn on, even if car is off. triggering the anti-left system. the theft system using the lighting to determine if the doors have opened. saturn has been aware of this problem on ions from 2003-2007. but have done nothing to fix the 1000's of complaints. problem has persisted since 2008.

Almost 100% of the time i stop my car and try to remove the key, it stays locked in the acc position. sometimes i can not even turn off the engine. i have to make several attempts to turn off the engine and remove the key from the switch.
05/22/201159147
Approximately 1 year ago i started having problems getting the key in the ignition to go back to the 'lock' position when i turned the car off. after jiggling the key it would eventually come out - until this past sunday when the key refused to turn at all and i was unable to shut my car off. i took it to the dealership where i had to remove the ignition fuse to shut off the car. i received a phone call from the dealership monday morning and was quoted a price of $390 plus tax to replace the ignition cylinder. i was told at that time how it would be fixed because they have replaced many ignitions due to the same problem. based on that information, i did some research on the internet and found a web-site (http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/saturn_ignition_lock.html) with 88 pages of complaints from other saturn owners experiencing the same issue. general motors has known about this for over 5 years (at least) and has not issued a re-call notice. how many consumers does it take to get them to be a responsible company? i contacted gm and voiced my concern. the two individuals i spoke to were rather snippy. they were also less than cordial when they spoke to the dealership - wanting to know why i was given their phone number. i told gm that i have documentation showing this has been an existing problem with the saturn line and they have known about it so my question to them was why haven't you issued a re-call. their response was 'we can't accept third party documentation as proof of any problem'. it ended up that i only had to pay $100, which i am very grateful about but i would still like the corporation of general motors to be held accountable for an obvious design flaw that could result in a very deadly outcome if someone was not able to turn their car off in an emergency.

It was about 25 f at about 8 am vehicle would not start or crank. the pass lock light came on, which when i researched said that i was starting with the wrong key. upon much more research i found this to be a common problem with these 2003-2006 ion. after many ignition switches were replaced and even the onboard computer, the same problem would recur. the best solution i found came from an airplane mechanic. be sure the ignition is off. he said to spray lps electro contact cleaner (any pure alcohol contact cleaner will work) into the ignition. saturate it. wait 10 minutes for it to dry then spray sea foam deep creep penetrant and lubricant into ignition switch. this worked for 2 years for me. it happened again this past march of 2011. i repeated this process and have had no problem since. this works by cleaning out the old stiff lubricant gm used during manufacture and putting in a lighter lubricant. total cost for both sprays was under $20.
03/01/2010
2005 saturn ion, multiple problems, such as the key getting stuck in the ignition switch, in order to release the key i need to push a button underneath and inside the steering column. also, the passlock system is defective, it prevents the car from starting and drains the battery, i have replaced the battery twice in one year.
03/04/201190000
I own a 2005 saturn ion and when its cold, car won't start. the passlock illuminates and sometimes takes 30 minutes to restart. i have spent over $700 trying to fix it like changing ignition and starter and the problem still persists. i have been late numerous times for work and was stranded the other night for 30 minutes in the middle of nowhere in minus 20 degree weather. ( that is a safety issue.) i am fed up and can't believe there is no recall.
01/18/2010120000
Car wont always start, have to wait 10-20 minutes for it to start and not all of us have time to wait for this to happen, people have places to be, this happened 3 times in two months and has now happened 5 times in one week and the car shut off twice while driving the other day as well as getting stuck for 20 minutes in the cold at the gas station waiting for it to start. something needs to be done about this as it is obviously not safe and the fact that there hasnt been a recall is ridiculous! have read so many different storys on what to replace and i dont want to be spending money on pointless parts!!
01/24/201088900
In ambient temperature of 29 degrees, my vehicle would not start. passlock light was blinking for 10 minutes and then stopped. after that, i was able to start the car. this has happened before.

Vehicle will start intermittently on cold and/or damp mornings. online research has shown the cause to be a defective body control module (bcm; a component of the factory-installed anti-theft system), confirmed by an experienced automotive technician. said technician has stated to complainant that vehicle may be subject to recall due to defective bcm; however, according to nhtsa, this vehicle is under recall only for exterior lighting issues (nhtsa campaign id #09e012000). complainant requests detailed recall information for this specific part (bcm), for this specific make and model of vehicle (listed above). if no such recall exists, complainant requests a recall be initiated.

Passlock malfunction due to faulty ignition switch causes no crank and activation of 10 minute relearn sequence. only happens when temperatures are below 40 degrees. has always happened ever since i bought the car january 3rd, 2009. frequency of occurence has increased, and i'm scared that it will cause a crash if i happen to stall in traffic. the remedy to this situation has been discussed in numerous technical forums on the internet - all of which point to replacement of the ignition switch. the cause is thought to be excessive grease applied to the internals of the switch. i think gm should recall the affected units exhibiting this problem and provide no cost replacement of the ignition switch. this is not a new problem. thousands of owners have been experiencing this aggrivating and sometimes dangerous technical fault. gm is ignoring the issue and offering saturn owners absolutely no assistance to correct this serious problem. if gm does not act, the law of averages says that eventually someone may be injured or killed as a result of this malfunction. please help us. this isn't fair at all.

2005 saturn ion. when i turn the car off the key is stuck in the ignition and won't release. after some time the key eventually releases itself. i recently brought the car into a gm dealer and they stated there was nothing wrong, they lubed up the parts and said i would be fine. the key continues to get stuck.

My 2005 saturn ion will refuse to start. i know it is not the battery or alternator. all i have to do is let it sit for a mimium of 15 minutes and viola it will start. i believe it has to to with the pass code inthe key ignition.

When driving, the power steering will occasionally go out. also, sometimes the car wont start, it wont even turn over (but all of the lights, fan, etc work). other times the key will not come out of the ignition when you turn the motor off.

I put the key in the ignition, turn the key to start, and the on board security system (passlock) disables the car. i have to wait 15 minutes to try to start the car again. this is an intermittent problem that has been happening the entire life of the car. the dealership says to replace the ignition switch, but after a few months it starts happening again. the ignition turns, it's that the passlock security system sees random key turns as attempts to steal the car and disables the starter. very dangerous since it strands you wherever you are. *tr

2005 saturn ion - car experiences daily intermittent failures to start at any given time. in most instances you exit the car, insert key 5-10 minutes later and the car will generally. eventually it does. problems points to systemic issue with the ignition. research on the internet shows an inordinate amount of saturns with this ignition issue. *tr

We have a 2005 saturn ion that more often than not refuses to start. we have had this problem for the duration of our ownership. the theft deterrent system is a possible culprit. it could be any number of other things. turns out this is a big problem. please help the many of us to get gm to fix this. it makes our lives harder by the day. *tr

Car will not start when it is very cold out! key will turn, radio etc. will work, but anti-theft system cuts off fuel. many, many people have same problem, on saturn ion 2, numerous years! the oil/grease used in ignition freezes! saturn knows of this problem, but is turning a blind eye! *tr

 1. events leading up to failure i was getting ready to leave for work. the time of day was 9am. the temperature had been hovering around freezing all night. the vehicle had not been driven since the previous day at around 9pm. i unlocked my vehicle using keyless entry - driver door only. i inserted my key in the ignition, closed the door, pushed the clutch to the floor while fastening my seatbelt. i then turned the key to the start position. the engine did not start - the starter did not engage at all. when i released the key, the security light (an amber padlock icon) started flashing slowly - once per second. i then followed the restart procedure for this situation according to the owner manual - simply wait until the light stops flashing, turn the key to lock, then restart. ten minutes later, the security light stopped flashing and remained illuminated. i then turned the key to lock, and then restarted engine. 2. the failure, how often, its consequences: the vehicle did not start due to a failure of, or a malfunction of, some component of the factory vehicle security system. it has happened a total of three times between the incident date and march 30, 2009. it only seems to occur when the temperature overnight hovers around freezing, or drops below freezing. the consequences of this failure for me have been minimal, but i was very fortunate in each instance to be parked in a safe place, where my prompt egress was not necessary. i am reporting this situation to the odi because of the potential consequences of this failure occurring during normal driving - if i stall the engine in heavy traffic and am not able to restart for ten minutes until the security light stops flashing, i would be in a very dangerous situation, and my vehicle would present a significant hazard to other drivers. 3. what was done to correct: nothing has been done to correct this failure, as my dealership has no current solution. *tr

I bought a 2005 saturn ion in march 2008. since then, i have had the key get stuck on a constant basis. i had that fixed, but the key still sticks, but i push it in to release it. at least it's better than it was. the car does not like to start in cold weather. i replaced the battery. cost $421.00. now, at only 45,888 miles, my steering display light keeps coming on and i lose power steering. got is checked told cost $700 total, but the only problem is: no part is available. it is on back log. so, i can't afford the part and labor anyway, but no part available? what do i do now with a car i am still paying on? i feel i a m stuck with a lemon. *tr

I bought a 2005 saturn ion last august 2008. on november 2008, i experienced a difficulty on starting the car. so i brought it to saturn dublin for a check up and repair, and they did all the test for the car and informed that they have to replace the ignition of the car as this is the findings of their mechanic.. i agreed as i thought this was the authorized dealer mechanic, i paid for $700+, for repair, labor and parts.. but recently last week, may 2009, my car would not start again..i brought it back to the dealer and had it checked.. they said there was nothing wrong with the car, it started when they checked and they asked me to pay $130 for the check up..which i paid. a few days after i was at work, which is in union city, 22 miles away from my house and when i was about to go home,my car would not start gain.. same problem as before... had to call a tow truck to have my car towed.. as i relayed this to my brother in law... we searched in the net on the issue and concerns and found out i was not the only one who had these problems.. hundreds of us were victims of this problem. now, i did had a bad judgment on buying a saturn car. *tr

Since i purchased my car, it will not start in cold weather. i have to wait about 10 mins, try again and it will start right up. well, about a week ago it shut down while i was driving down a busy street in my city. after about 4 hours of it sitting, i went back and drove it home with no problems. then, a few days later it did the same thing while returning to work from a lunch break. i had to leave it on the side of the road and got a ride. after work, i picked it up and was attempting to drive it straight to the dealership. while driving on i-10 east, it shut down again. on the interstate!!!!! it was raining outside and the person behind me almost hit me. i don't even know how i coasted to the median, except god! my car would not drive anymore. i left it there and got a ride home with someone because i didn't want to sit in the rain alone on the interstate. when i went back at about 11:00 pm to pick my car up, it wouldn't start. i waited 10 or so mins and it started up. i drove it straight to a friends house that was nearby and left it there. i contacted gm and they advised me to bring it to saturn, which i have done many times before, so i did. they tell me there is nothing wrong with my car. so, i told them to keep it until they figure it out because i will not put my life in danger again. i have been going back and forth with gm and saturn and no one will take responsibility for this. its ridiculous that this car is putting my life in danger. i refuse to drive it again. and now i am paying a note on something that i cant drive because it may stop working in the middle of traffic. *tr

Electric power steering failure in 2005 saturn ion in less than 16000 miles but 8 months out of warranty. power steering became operational after each restart, but failed again within 3-5 minutes of driving. very difficult to steer posing a safety hazard for my wife. dealer repair required replacement of complete steering column approaching $1000 in repair cost. ignition switch has also failed to permit car from starting on two occasions. dealer also replaced at the same time. dealer returned both parts to me. i have learned that both are common failures with this car and other gm compacts. several incidents of repeated failures of the electric power steering. there should have been recalls or reimbursement for these premature failures. no wonder gm is going bust with a product of such low reliability and poor design. *tr

The ignition key gets stuck and will not come out of the car. this is the second time after having the ignition switch replaced last year. i took it back to saturn after the warranty expired on the new part (of course) and they kept it overnight trying to get it to fail. they greased the key and told me it was fixed, did not replace anything but blamed it on the key wearing down... *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 saturn ion 3. the contact stated that she has been experiencing failures with the ignition in her vehicle. during cold temperatures in the winter seasons, the key would fail to start the engine. all of the interior lighting in the vehicle would illuminate; however, the vehicle would not start at all. through online research, the contact discovered that numerous consumers were experiencing the same failure. she read information concerning warming up the steering column in order to restart the vehicle. the information stated that she must somehow heat up the steering column. the contact stated that shortly after she followed this advice, the engine started in her vehicle. she has not taken the vehicle to the dealer because the vehicle is out of warranty. she does not believe that she should pay for something that she feels is a manufacturer defect. the failure did not occur in previous winters because the vehicle was parked in an indoor garage. the vehicle is currently being parked in an outside parking lot. the failure and current mileages were 18,000. updated 2/23/09 *cn the consumer also stated the key would get stuck in the ignition when trying to turn the vehicle off. also the anit-theft light illuminated as well. updated 02/26/09. *jb

I have a saturn ion1. i have 73,000 miles on it. i have a difficult time starting it on days where the temperature is below 35 degrees. i have to turn the key and keep it turned until it can run without me holding the key and rev the engine to atleast 3-4 rpms. i have to do this for 15-20 min. until it can idol on its own, before i decide to drive or the car will not remain on. while driving it will shut off. now if i make a sharp turn it turns off. this problem is getting progressively worse. while under warranty i had the ignition replace once. i also had been told by saturn that my keys were too heavy, so i began driving with only the key and the key ring. the problem is a huge safety concern to me. luckily have been able to steer the car out of the way and have not had any accidents yet. it is my only car and i have a lot more to pay on it and subsequently can not afford a new car. i am stuck. *tr

I have a 2005 saturn ion and it has a habit of not starting at times. this has happened several times since my husband and i have owned it. we turn the key in the ignition and the car will not start. we have to wait anywhere from 10-45 minutes for the car to start and it sometimes cause my husband to be late to work. this is an even bigger concern since we have a four month old son. we have not had the money or time during the week to go the saturn dealership but i have called the company who handles my extended warranty and he said that this is a common issue. from the discussion boards i gather that this is a very common issue and there should be a recall. *tr

When i shut off my 2005 saturn ion, the key does not always come out of the ignition as it should. i have to wait a few minutes before the key will come out. this is a recurring problem and has been going on for over a year. i am also having problems with my power steering. the pwr str comes on all the time. when i shut the car off, it resets, but after a few minutes it comes back on again. this has been happening for the past two months. i took my car to saturn of fayetteville (nc) when the power steering first started acting up, and the mechanic said he could not find the problem, but if it kept happening i would have to have the steering console replaced. the estimated cost of fixing it? over $900. *tr

I purchased a 2005 saturn ion with 32 miles on it july 11, 2005. on september 22, 2005 while driving my daughter to school in the rain, the car stalled and began to fill with water from the floor up. i had it towed to the dealer for repair and was told the left fron sunroof drain hose was plugged. they said this caused an electrical problem which caused the stall. the service dept. said they cleaned the drain hose and all was ok. well, we had a heavy rain, not the first since 11/2005, on august 18, 2007. i was able to start the car, but it stalled right away. in addition, the floor on the driver's side was wet. this occurred on a saturday and by monday when the car was towed to the saturn dealership, there was a pond of water on the floor of the car. in addition, the cd player has been replaced because it ate cd's. the new radio worked ok for about 6 month's, but is now unable to pick up reception to any station. also, at one time, the driver's side door became jammed and could not be opened from the inside or outside. the lock rod and inside door handle were bent. at the same time water was leaking through the driver's side window and the window was off the track and falling into the door. this was also repaired by the dealer because i purchased the extended warranty. this car has been nothing but trouble and i regret purchasing it. i have never had so many problems with a new car and i would not recommend this car to anyone. *tr

The car started experiencing electrical issues. the accessory jack became inoperable, the radio would stop putting out sound, even though it was on you would not be able to turn it off then the abs light would stay on and the warning bell would go off. finally the anti-theft light would come on and stay on. upon going to my car after work it would not start. i thought it was a dead battery so we jumped the car and after about 15 minutes it started. 1 week later the light came on and stayed on again, but after restarting the car it went out. again when i went out another day to start by car after my lunch break the car wouldn't start. i called saturn and requested road side assistance, but after 15 minutes the car started. i took it to the saturn dealership and they replaced the computer (control) body system. the next day the anti theft light came on again, i took it back and they had to replace the switch in the ignition. in june the radio again was not working properly. after restarting the car it worked again. i called saturn again to complain and took it in for diagnostic at that time they could not find any codes. 1 week later the radio again would not work, so i drove straight to the dealership without restarting the car so that they could see the problem in action. i was told that it was the radio only and they would replace it. a new radio has been ordered but during this time the abs system again came on with a warning bell. i turned the car off and back on the system reset itself. 2 days later after leaving the store the abs light went on again with the bell and the anti-theft light came on. i restarted the car, but the anti-theft light stayed on the entire trip home. i was told that if the light was on the car should not run, but it did. i took the car in today for them to look at it and they said they are going to replace the radio and run a diagnostic on it. *nm

Key will not release from my ignition. it appears that the ignition does not read that the stick shift is engaged in park and does not release the key from the ignition. this began happening just as my car reached 60,000 miles (my car is currently at 84,000). there does not seem to be any pattern to the problem, just random and in any weather condition. sometimes i just have to leave the key in the ignition and leave the vehicle. the key is still in accessory mode and does drain the battery. i brought it to the dealer at my first incidence and the ignition was replaced. it was covered under the warranty at the time, but the warranty expired just after.*tr

2005 saturn ion recall- i have this car a year ago and the problem is the ignition. car wont start especially on a cold weather. i need to wait for 15-20 mins before it starts. i've been late at work many time s already and i've been paying for this car but i think its not worth it. and also, i can pull out the keys while the engine is running, while the car is moving. weird! you may want to check consmeraffairs.com--search saturn ion to check on the complaints. i have pasted some for you to check out. thank you and i am hoping that you will find a way to solve this problem. cameron of grand rapids mi (01/20/09) i also have had the same issues with the car not starting. i bought the ion 04 brand new and everything worked fine for the first couple of years. lately i've been late for work and missed other appointments due to the issue. this is definitely a safety issue for those of us living in the cold north. imagine your car not starting in below zero temps. i'm not willing to freeze to death over this. in the same breath i do not have the money to spend to fix something that saturn is well aware of and based on comments on this site has happened numerous times. if they are unwilling to recall these cars and parts then i'm sure a class action lawsuit would get their attention! laura of tampa fl (01/19/09) i am having the same problem with the ignition lock as apparently many other saturn owners. i started by calling the local saturn dealership to find out how much money they wanted me to pay them to fix this problem that they caused by using faulty parts. $171.83 was the amount quoted to me. obviously i would like to do anything in my power to ensure saturn doesn't get a single dime more from me. i called the customer service line (800-553-6000)to inquire about the reasoning behind not issuing a recall. i was given the same line about it not being a safety issue. *tr

At about 38,000 miles, the ignition switch locked up with the engine running. i had to disconnect the battery to shut off the engine. i purchased a replacement switch with key from the saturn dealer for about $140.00 and installed it myself (thank god i'm a mechanic) or the cost would have been about triple. saturn does not claim any design responsibility for the thousands of key switch failures, but gm is certainly willing to take our money to repair a known design flaw. next vehicle i purchase will be made by chrysler-2005 caravan sxt is mechanically perfect with very good fuel economy. no more gm products for this family! *tr

I have had ignition problems with my vehicle. there have been times when one of my keys locks the ignition, all occurrences while trying to turn the car on, and i had to really work at it to get the key to turn. it could take up to 5 minutes of jiggling the key hard before it turns. this ended when i started using my other key. with this other key, there have been four separate occasions when my car would not start. when this happens, the radio turns on but there is only a buzzing sound coming from the car. if i wait long enough, the car will eventually start. however, i don't always have time to wait. this happens both after the car sits no more than a few days or after having driven it the day before. it also happens in cold weather and in moderate weather. i cannot drive a vehicle that is so unreliable, but i also cannot afford to purchase another one. *tr

I have a 2005 saturn ion quad /. in feb of 07 i went to park my car and the key would not turn off the car nor come out of the ignition. the car was towed to the nearest saturn dealership and the ignition was replaced. in june of 07 this occurred again, it was towed and the ignition was replaced. then in again the same thing occurred in aug 07 and the ignition was replaced. in jan of 2008, when i took the car in for service, i asked them to check the ignition because it had stuck on me several times before i was able to turn the car off. they once again replaced the ignition. last week i was 500 miles from home and pulled off to get gas and was unable to turn the car off to fuel up. by the time i got home i was able to shut the car off. two days later, it happened again. the car was towed and the ignition replaced. i just went over my 36,000 but the dealership said it would be covered under the 1 yr parts warranty, so i did not have to pay anything for the repair. but i am still upset about a common problem not being addressed by saturn. they either have faulty ignition parts or there is something else going on to cause this problem and it needs to be investigated. replacing an ignition 5 times in 18 months is not normal. i pulled it up on the internet and this seems to be a common problem. so this situation is not unique to me. what happens when 13 months from now, it happens again then i will have to pay out of my pocket for something that is saturns fault. i have contacted the saturn corp and they cant explain why no recall has been issued on this part. *tr

I own a 2005 saturn ion. i have the same issue that i noticed has been documented by many other saturn owners on this site. the key gets stuck in the ignition and will not release after the car has been turned off. i am forced to restart the car about 3-4 times every time i want to get out of my car. i brought the car to the dealership while still under warranty and they told me that a part had to be ordered, that they would notify me when the part was received, and that it would be covered. a month later i called to check on the part and was told it was received the day before and that the work could not be completed on a weekend. i told them i could not be without my car and could not make an appointment until i had a day off of work. at this point i asked if i went out of my warranty in the intern if it would still be covered. i was told that since the problem was documented while still under warranty it would be covered. when i was able to make an appointment a month later, they refused to cover it because i was out of warranty and want close to $400 for the fix. needless to say i am very disappointed with saturn, not only with the car itself, but also with their neglect to take responsibility for the car's defect, as well corporate response to the claim that i issued back in march (which by the way was closed without resolution or explanation). i have since opened another claim. *tr

I bought the car brand new, drove one mile off the lot, the engine stopped and would not start. it was towed the next morning to the dealer and they replaced the engine control module. at 15,400 miles the car again would not start, they replaced the ignition switch. at 16,000 miles the chime for the ignition would not turn off and the ignition housing was replaced. at 19,500 miles i complained that the car would start and immediately turn off again, the dealer said nothing was wrong. the next day the ignition would not turn off and the key was stuck. they replaced the ignition housing again. at 22,300 miles i complained that the key was sticking in the ignition, the dealer said nothing was wrong. about 6 months later (last weekend before leaving to go out of town) at 27,200 miles the ignition would not turn off and the key was stuck again. the ignition housing was replaced for the third time! i contacted the manufacturer and was only offered a one year extension on the warranty. what good will an extended warranty do for a car that you can't trust to drive because you never know whether it will start or turn off when you need it to!!! i will never buy another saturn again!!!!! *tr

Dt*: the contact stated while the vehicle was in an idle state or placed in reverse, the engine intermittently stalled without warning. the engine easily restarted after stalling. the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who determined the excessive weight of all the key chains used by the contact allowed the ignition to turn off on its own. after the dealer's assessment, only one key chain was used while the keys were in the ignition, but the engine stalling persisted. the manufacturer was alerted. *ak

I could not shut off the car which was a 2005 saturn ion 3. the key locked in the ignition switch and would not shut off the y engine. the only way i was able to shut it off was by dumping the clutch, but the ignition was still on. i took the car to saturn of indianapolis. they told me that the ignition key lock cylinder was binding and they needed to install a new ignition lock cylinder and housing. they installed a new lock cylinder, lock cylinder housing and cut two new keys. *ak

I own a 2005 saturn ion 1. i bought it brand new in late 2004, and have not had any problems with it at all until this winter (2006). my problem has been that when it is cold outside, the car refuses to crank at all. i took it to a saturn dealer and they said it was the battery. i paid over $100 to have a new battery put in, and was reassured that it fixed the starting problem. i thought it had until about a week later. the car has started to have problems starting again, so i paid for a brand new car battery that i didn't need in the first place. i originally was going to take it back to saturn to get them to look at the car again, but i started doing research online. i found that saturns not starting in cold weather is a widespread problem, and saturn refuses to do anything about it. i am not going to go pay to have a new ignition switch put it, when that doesn't solve the problem at all. it's ridiculous that saturn isn't owning up to the problems so many people are having with the vehicles they own. so much money is being wasted by the consumer, trying to get a problem fixed, that isn't fixable unless gm recalls this faulty ignition switch. *nm

Dt: vehicle was parked outside in the yard and consumer went to the vehicle to get some papers out of the glove compartment and smelled smoke coming from both front and back of the vehicle. no flames at this time. consumer did not enter the vehicle. ran inside the house and called the fire department. the fire department came and put the fire out. the fire department investigated the vehicle and determined it was an electrical fire, and most likely was linked to the battery, where they believed the fire originated. no repairs were made. the insurance company did not determine if vehicle was totaled at this time. *ak

All dash gauges failed, including gas gauge, speedometer, odometer, etc. on at least two separate occaisions. car was two weeks old to the day. my son (the owner/lessee) was attempting to take it from his work to the dealer less than a half mile away for advice when he was involved in accident that probably didn't contribute to the accident. however, it's important to note that when i called the dealer and let them know the situation with the dash was the reason he was returning the car, the salesman then informed me that oh, yeah, those cars sometimes have a software problem in them, and while we had to wait a while to get a fix, we now have one. so if they knew there was a problem, why didn't they fix it during the dealer prep stage? or at least warn the consumer of this problem? we now have a 2 week old car with body damage and are awaiting word from our insurance on which body shop it should go to. but, in the meantime, we still have a car in need of a software upgrade even after it's fixed. i will be horrified to ever set foot in that car again, let alone know that this car is the primary transportation for my college-age son. the car has approx 500 miles on it now, less the mileage it had on it when we purchased it. *ak
