| Odi has received 846 complaints and gm identified 3,489 reports alleging sudden loss of steering power assist in model year (my) 2004 through 2007 saturn ion vehicles manufactured and sold by general motors corporation (gm).sixteen of these complaints alleged that the eps warning lamp had illuminated before or during the loss of steering assist and the increased steering effort contributed to a crash. two of the gm crash claims indicated that the driver was injured in the crash. in a previous preliminary evaluation pe10-005, odi investigated the sudden loss of power steering assist in my 2005 through 2010 chevrolet cobalt vehicles. in may 2011, in response to an odi information request letter for rq10-004, gm provided odi with complaint, warranty and eps system information related to eps loss of assist for the saturn ion and peer vehicles pontiac g6 and chevrolet malibu. in that response, gm indicated that the eps system used in the subject vehicles was the same as that used in the my2005 to 2010 chevrolet cobalt and pontiac g5. in march 2010, gm recalled approximately 1.05 million chevrolet cobalt and pontiac g5 vehicles (nhtsa recall no. 10v-073) to correct a defect with the eps assist motor. the defect identified was described as a buildup of brush debris mixed with oily material on the eps electric motor armature which causes the motor to stop functioning; the same problem identified in the current subject vehicles.odi has duplicated this failure in both a chevrolet cobalt and saturn ion previously tested at the vehicle research and test center (vrtc). in the defect notification letter for the previously recalled cobalt and g5 vehicles, gm stated that the vehicles may experience a sudden loss of assist that could occur at any time while driving and that if power steering was lost the vehicle would revert to manual steering mode and would require increased steering effort from the driver.odi believes that, depending on driving circumstances this increase in steering effort could result in some loss of control and a crash.this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea11-014) to further assess the frequency, scope and safety consequences of a sudden loss of steering assist in the subject vehicles. | ||||||

| Loss of power steering during highway speed. pulled over and restarted car, power steering came back on then stopped again. ever since this incident has occurred the power steering will randomly shut off. this could be a dangerous situation when it occurs during making turns or driving sharp curvy roads as it takes a lot of upper body strength to turn the wheel at lower speeds. | |||

| The first time it went off was when we were entering a highway. the electric alarm went off and then i found the steering was not working. it was dangerous and very hard to pull over when cars behind are accelerating to get into the highway traffic. after a restart, everything seemed okay. then on our way back home the same thing happened for 4 or 5 times. we had to drive in the right lane at a low speed to give ourselves enough space for safty. | |||

| I was driving my 2005 saturn ion at 50 mph on a highway when the power steering warning alarm sounded and the instrument panel displayed power steering failure. i was able to pull over to the side of the road. i turned of the engine and raised the hood to check the fuses. the fuses were good, so i restarted the car and the power steering display was clear. i drove a few more miles and the same thing happened again. after some research i have discovered this is a common failure on saturn ion and other gm vehicles with electric power steering. this could be very dangerous for many drivers when this happens without warning! it is harder to steer the slower you drive. | |||

| Power steering message comes on and car is very hard to steer. if i stop and restart the car the power steering comes back. at first this happened once every few weeks. now it is becoming a daily occurrence; even more than once per day. it appears to be a common problem for saturn ions. the local dealership that inherited saturns told me they have not heard of this problem. i have not taken the car to be serviced yet. | |||

| 2005 saturn ion i power steering recall i had the recall notice - called saturn of cool springs - and they point blank asked is it doing it now i said no and their response was dont worry about it. on my way home from work, a light (a warning light) came on my dash, they next thing i know the steering jerked and i crossed over 5 lanes of traffic during rush hour and hit a concrete wall head on. i could not control the steering as it was locked. gm states the recall is for only going at low rates of speed - i think that is a cop out from gm. | |||

| I have a 2005 saturn ion which is now over 100,00k miles. the power steering suddenly went out with no warning signals on dashboard. there is no fluid resevoir to put the fluid and the car is not under warranty because of mileage. i tried turning the car off and on again and still no luck. after reading up on the saturn issue, i learned that there are many others with different makes and year of the same model having the same issues. i have no money to repair this vehicle and would like to know if saturn (gm) is going to do a recall on this issue. it cost over $900.00 to fix this issue. i have tried contacting saturn dealers but of course the company has been sold. i have contacted a gm dealers repair shop and was told that they just try to repair the issue they are not able to help with warranty issues. | |||

| I was turning into a parking lot 7/5/2010, in a 2005 saturn ion, when the power steering light came on, and power steering stopped working. now, it happens almost constantly, the power steering keeps going out, it happened 10 times just today 7/7/2010. every time, i have pulled over shut the car off and waited a few minutes, before restarting car and continuing, just as the tsb from gm advises. the car only has 50,000 miles, and yet the power steering is out on it. gm has issued a recall for chevrolet cobalts, pontiac g5, etc, for the electric power steering, yet have not for saturn ions, even though they are nearly the same vehicle, and have the same parts and problems. | |||

| 2005 saturn ion keeps losing power steering as i drive. the wheel turns very hard and requires aggressive strength to turn it. it happens every day and i get the message in the dash pwr str then my powersteering shuts off. its an electric motor connected to the steering wheel. it is the same part number and assembly as the 06-07 cobalt, pontiac g5 etc. recall. they have the same system. gm recalled those but left out saturn. i went in for diagnosis and it is a $1,200 repair. gm recalled the same part number motor and same system on other cars. this is unfair and very unsafe. i have heard it is a normal thing for these electric motors to be going out left and right on all cars that have them but only some get recalled not all.... i am unhappy and cant drive my car safely i have to carpool now. | |||

| No crashes or injuries. my power steering keeps going 'out'. one time i will drive and it will be fine, i'll start it up an hour or so later and boom for whatever reason the p.s. light is on and i have no p.s.. from what i've been able to find out, the same ps 'column' that was also installed in a few other gm cars were recalled, but, for whatever reason the saturn ion was not? this has been going on for about a week. i am taking it to saturn for a diagnostics test on mon. i am also hoping that saturn can 'clear the codes' if this is just an electrical/computer problem. if not, it seems to me they should honor the recall set out to the other consumers for the same problem!. i bought the car brand new in 2005. it has been a great car otherwise. | |||

| I was turning into sam's club and the power steering quit working. the car was very hard to steer and, because i was turning a corner and this happened unexpectedly, i almost hit the car that was waiting to exit the sam's club lot. i then parked the car after struggling with the steering wheel to turn into a parking spot. i went shopping, came back and, when the car was restarted, i had my power steering. i had another failure within two days, and now the power steering fails even just going to the grocery store (about 2 miles). i called the local gm dealer who said to bring it in for diagnosis. what i read online is this is a $1000+ repair usually replacement of the steering column. i even went to an auto salvage and was quoted $450 for the power steering column and installation. my car only has 66,000 miles on it. this appears to be the same problem for which gm currently has a recall for cobalt and pontiac g6 cars. | |||

| 1st time my power steering went out i was backing out of a parking space at maybe 5mph and when i put the car in drive the car started dinging, the pwr steering light came on and the wheel locked up. turned the car off, let it sit for a bit, turned it back on and it was back to normal. has done it 3 other times while on the road at no more than 45 mph. i have been told that the entire steering column may have to be replaced but the dealership is telling me that there is no recall at this time. haven't had it repaired yet. this is extremely dangerous and was very scary as i had 2 small children in the car each time it's happened. current mileage is 46,700. | |||

| While driving the car, the power steering light came on and immediately there was no power steering. luckily we were driving straight. had we been turning a corner it could've caused an accident. i took it to the garage and was told it was the motor in the power steering column. the search was on for a motor. if none could be found, the entire steering column would have had to be replaced. the motor was found and ordered. i hope to have the car back in a week or so. | |||

| My saturn ion is having the same issue as chevy cobalt where i loose power steering for no apparent reason. once it cuts out i have to pull to the side of road turn off car, then restart it and all is fine until it does it again. this has been happening for a couple months. i had the car checked today and it is the power steering motor, which will be replaced as soon as part comes in. i feel gm should recall these cars too. this could be a real danger if on a curving mountain road when power steering goes. | |||

| Power steering has been going out on my 2005 saturn ion. after searching on the internet for causes, i realized many people are having the same problem. it was said that the system used has been recalled in other gm models, but not the saturn ion line. it was suggested by the other owners that we submit this problem in an effort for a recall. it is a safety issue when you lose your power steering without notice. luckily at his point i have not had a situation causing any damage or injury. just inconvenience and worry about when it will go out again. thank you *tr | |||

| I was advised after calling saturn a third time that i file a complaint on this website to go toward a recall of my electric power steering motor on my saturn ion 2. 1. one night in november 2009, while making a long drive on the highway, my power steering went out without warning. when i turned the car off and back on, the power steering came back on. 2. however, since then, the power steering started to go out more and more frequently. for the past two months, the power steering goes out as soon as i start driving the car and i drive without it 99% of the time. i have no idea whether i am causing any further damage to the car driving it like this. there is no warning of it happening other than the beep that occurs after it goes out. sometimes the beep will be so delayed that i will go to turn and it is extremely hard and unexpected. this back and forth of having or not having power steering is obviously a safety issue. i cannot rely on skill or muscle memory alone to know the force i need to steer the car. i have not yet had a crash but i worry about it more and more. parking is a huge problem. 3. i was told by saturn that if i went to one of the (few remaining) saturn dealers to have a diagnostic done, it would then contribute to a recall. i did go have this done, and the dealer told me it was only a matter of time till a recall, since we see this problem every day now. they even started carrying just the motor since it was so expensive for thousands of people to have to replace the whole steering column. they quoted me a price for repair and i've been waiting for the recall. it is very hard to scrape up $600 to repair a part that they all know is defective. do people have to crash and get seriously injured or die before it will be recalled? now to see other gm cars get recalled for the exact same power steering motor, but not mine, is unbelievably frustrating. there is no saturn electric power steering motor...they use the exact same part. *tr | |||

| On jan 16 2010 my 18 year old son was driving our 2005 saturn ion and he called me on my cell to tell me the power steering suddenly stopped working. i told him to pull over, (he already did) turn the car off, and wait a few minutes. he did that and called me back about 15 minutes later to say he did make it home and the ps failed again right before he got home. he then told me he noticed the power steering light on the dash would come on if the radio was on so he did not have that on for the rest of the way home. it did not make any sense at the time until i was told t the car has electric steering. the next day (sunday), i drove the car to sears to have the battery tested thinking that was the problem as i have never changed out the battery since the purchase of the car. sears said the battery was fine and they said my problem with the power steering was probably not related to the battery and they recommend i take it to the dealer. during the drive that day to sears the power steering was fine because i did not turn on the radio or headlights (the ps light also came on when the lights were turned on). however, on the way home the ps again failed anyway right before we got home. the car was not driven the rest of the day. the next day, monday the 18th, i drove the car to the saturn dealer (saturn of tucson) and the steering was fine the whole way over. the dealer replaced the power steering motor and their explanation was it shorted out. i asked if this was something i caused and they said no. they also had no explanation as to why this happened given the car had only 61,000 (approx) miles and it was only 4.5 years old. the repair cost was $296.00. *tr | |||

| While my wife was driving our 2005 ion 2 she told me that the steering went out while turning at a corner. i blew it off until it happened to me about 7 days later. i had to fight the steering in a turn, very difficult, i found out. i could stop & restart and steering would be okay for a while. it has since been continuous and not worth the effort for a restart since it will only last for a few minutes. i took it to dealer and diagnosed as eps unit shorting out. they did not have replacement part and are well aware of condition from other owners. it's been a week and still no part. when the dash alarm goes off (ding, ding, ding) it means grab wheel tight! it will also show (pwr steer) in cluster. i would consider this as an extremely dangerous condition and compliment the other drivers that have experienced it for keeping their vehicles under control. *tr | |||

| My car key gets stuck in my saturn ion 2005 after i have shut it off, also when i try to turn the key it will not turn, i have to turn the wheel and jiggle the key to get it to start. looks like this is a very common problem in the saturn ions. also the power steering goes out in my car, but once i shut the car off and on the power steering problem goes away but after about 10-15 minutes give or take the light comes back on and i lose power steering. sometimes this problem will go away for a couple of days, but it comes back. this is very dangerous as it is hard for me to make sharp turns. took the car in to the shop today, luckily still on warranty, but shame on saturn because after doing research online, these are very very common problems with saturn. i will never buy another saturn! oh and my transmission light will come on and i can't drive fast. that happened for a week and then went away for a couple of months now it is back. i was on the interstate when this happened and could only go 35 mph. thank god it wasn't rush hour. that is being fixed also... *tr | |||

| I own a 2005 saturn ion and the power steering was going. i took the car into the dealership, they said the steering motor had to be replaced, now they replaced it for free, but made me wait a week and sent me back out on the road with a car that had power steering that worked sometimes and not other times. then two weeks later the entire car started to fail. the speedometer, the transmission would not switch gears, the power steering went again, and the breaks where pretty much gone. so after causing a big scene the car was looked at and found that the transmission module went on the car. so they replaced the part after making me wait two days to get my car back. my concern is why is a car that will be turning 5 years old next month and only has about 27,900 miles on it is having all these big problems. in the matter of one mouth i have has a new brain put into the car. the customer service was awful and rude. they all try to blame each other. when i went to pick the car up the service people would not even talk to me they told me to see the cashier she has my keys. i said i am not leaving here until i test drive it, she said ok, it's park in the lot on the side somewhere. i was like nice, you don't even know where my car is on your lot. so in the matter of one month i have the steering column and the transmission module replaced. *tr | |||

| I have a 2005 saturn ion with only 20,000 miles on it. recently my power steering has been failing repeatedly. it goes out with little warning at any time. i have seen other gm models recalled for this same issue but not saturn. i have read online about 100s of people with this same problem! this is a safety issue, why isn't it being recalled? i only have a power train warranty left on this vehicle and i have heard this would cost up to $1500 which is completely unfair! i am still making payments and it has hardly any miles on it! i did not expect something major to happen this soon. they need to respect their customers safety and fix this issue!!!!!! and no there hasn't been any deaths or injuries yet but i am expecting it as soon as i have to make a sharp turn and can't! *tr | |||

| I have a 2005 saturn ion 2 with defective power steering. i will try not to let out my frustration but to try to make a good point about this problem because, this is the worst issue i'd have to deal with in a while. my car's steering keeps going out on me, the power steering light will come on, then the steering will be stuck. i have a 15months old baby girl and this is the only car i own. i work part time and can not afford any extra expenses, i'm stuck with this horrible car, have no where to find help. from all the research i have done, this is been around long enough to get a recall, but apparently saturn totally ignored this claims and keeps making these cars. even newer saturn cars have this same problem and i just can 't believe that there is no recall on this issue. the strange thing of all of the problem is that, the problem seems to occur in most cases just when the car's out of warranty. i am putting a statement together and will try to find a way to hold saturn accountable for this issue if i'm ever involved in an accident. my family is in complete danger, i am very upset, confused and very sad about the whole issue. this ia a nice car, with only 64000 miles, and only 4yrs. why could a problem this serious be ignored by saturn, what kind of stupid engineers do they have working for them that cant figure this out. *tr | |||

| Electric power steering failure in 2005 saturn ion in less than 16000 miles but 8 months out of warranty. power steering became operational after each restart, but failed again within 3-5 minutes of driving. very difficult to steer posing a safety hazard for my wife. dealer repair required replacement of complete steering column approaching $1000 in repair cost. ignition switch has also failed to permit car from starting on two occasions. dealer also replaced at the same time. dealer returned both parts to me. i have learned that both are common failures with this car and other gm compacts. several incidents of repeated failures of the electric power steering. there should have been recalls or reimbursement for these premature failures. no wonder gm is going bust with a product of such low reliability and poor design. *tr | |||

| Tl*the contact owns a 2005 saturn ion 3. the contact stated that she has been experiencing failures with the ignition in her vehicle. during cold temperatures in the winter seasons, the key would fail to start the engine. all of the interior lighting in the vehicle would illuminate; however, the vehicle would not start at all. through online research, the contact discovered that numerous consumers were experiencing the same failure. she read information concerning warming up the steering column in order to restart the vehicle. the information stated that she must somehow heat up the steering column. the contact stated that shortly after she followed this advice, the engine started in her vehicle. she has not taken the vehicle to the dealer because the vehicle is out of warranty. she does not believe that she should pay for something that she feels is a manufacturer defect. the failure did not occur in previous winters because the vehicle was parked in an indoor garage. the vehicle is currently being parked in an outside parking lot. the failure and current mileages were 18,000. updated 2/23/09 *cn the consumer also stated the key would get stuck in the ignition when trying to turn the vehicle off. also the anit-theft light illuminated as well. updated 02/26/09. *jb | |||

| I have a 2005 saturn ion-3 with 87,639 miles on it. last week on the freeway out of now where my power steering stopped working. this problem caused me to swerve almost causing an accident. i then pulled off to the side of the road to re-group and try to figure out what went wrong. after a few minutes i started the car and started driving, it was as if nothing ever happened. this happens almost every time i drive it now. it occasionally trips the power steering light, so i took it to my local saturn dealer. they scanned the car to check the problem and said that i need to replace the entire steering column due to a failed power steering module. they want $955.00 plus tax to address this issue. i do not feel safe driving my car. however i have no choice but to deal with it for i have no other means of transportation and i have to be able to make it back and forth to work to support the family. *tr | |||

| When i shut off my 2005 saturn ion, the key does not always come out of the ignition as it should. i have to wait a few minutes before the key will come out. this is a recurring problem and has been going on for over a year. i am also having problems with my power steering. the pwr str comes on all the time. when i shut the car off, it resets, but after a few minutes it comes back on again. this has been happening for the past two months. i took my car to saturn of fayetteville (nc) when the power steering first started acting up, and the mechanic said he could not find the problem, but if it kept happening i would have to have the steering console replaced. the estimated cost of fixing it? over $900. *tr | |||

| I sent a letter to gm it was passed to saturn corp. ongoing problems never fixed.started at 19000 miles and continue with mileage at 31000. 2 different service depts. still have the problems. blown off by saturn corp. by rude customer service. first service visit after specifically making an appointment for this lemon resulted in a car wash. the noise tech was not in. i drove 40 miles for a car wash? never went back. saturn sent a customer satisfaction survey and i replied; call me. they instructed me to go to another dealer. i did and the service advisor told me it was my rotors making the noise. he then tried to charge me for the repair!!! the vehicle is under warranty. he then said that they will do it at no charge after i protested. i received the car back, said thank you and left. when i got about a mile from the dealership, the problems were still there (noise and vibration from the front passenger side of the vehicle). i called him from my cell phone and told him and he said ;ok, we will get you in sometime during the week so we can spend more time with it. could you imagine how i would have felt if i had actually agreed to pay? i was very upset. saturn corp. called me after about 2 weeks and asked me how it went and i told them it did not go well. they contacted the service manager and after a while, he called me. i told him that i would come back in after the holidays. i called him to set an appointment just after the new year. we set one up on a saturday morning at the dealership. i showed up, he did not. i was taken care of by a service advisor. after checking the car out, he said that they needed to change the rack. so, i had to come back again. i picked it up the next day. here is the bottom line; now the car drifts, to the right to be exact, oh, and my vibration is still there along with the noise in the front end. i do not feel safe driving this vehicle. i believe it is a lemon or there is something else someone is not telling me! *nm | |||

| I was attempting to change lines on md i-97 north bound from the slow right lane to the fast lane left lane. when a car in the fast lane speed up which never allowed me to change lanes, i continued to travel in the same slow right lane. within 1 minute after that action of the attempted lane change, i experienced the steering wheel shaking erratically and trying to pull to the right. although the car was going straight, the steering wheel kept pulling to the right. eventually, the car started fishing tailing or swerving. when i tried to slow the car down, the sensitivity of the steering wheel over compensated for the minor turning of the steering wheel and basically took over the steering from me. this action of the car placed me into a position in which i could not fully recover on my own and made the car spin out of control facing the opposite direction and subsequently y causing an head-on collision. *nm | |||

| The power steering on my 2005 saturn ion completely stopped working right at about 37000, right after the warranty expired. i tried to have it fixed, but it's a new technology saturn implemented, (state of the art electronic power steering system), and it will cost $1100 to fix it. my car is fairly new still, and saturn corp. refuses to meet with me in the middle on the cost. without power steering, my car is unsafe to drive, and driving to work and back is a real challenge, and a dangerous challenge, but i cannot afford the cost of fixing it. ***saturn service advisor admitted to me that lots of the ions are having this problem.*** *tr | |||
