Defect SummaryToyota is recalling certain model year 2004 avalon vehicles; 2004 and 2005 camry, camry solara, highlander, and sienna vehicles, 2006 highlander hybrid; 2004 and 2005 lexus es330 and rx330; and 2006 lexus rx400h vehicles manufactured from june 1, 2004 through march 31, 2005, equipped with the 1mz-fe or 3mz-fe engine. the amount of adhesive agent applied between the outer ring and the torsional rubber damper (inner ring) in the crankshaft pulley may be inadequate. if the adhesive is insufficient, there is a possibility that the outer ring may become misaligned and it may not properly rotate with the inner ring, causing noise and/or illumination of the battery discharge indicator light.
Consequence SummaryIn some cases, the belt for the power steering pump may become detached from the pulley which could result in a loss of power steering and a sudden increase in steering effort, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryToyota will notify owners, and dealers will check the crankshaft pulley to identify whether it was produced by the u.s. supplier. if so, the dealer will replace the pulley with a new one at no charge. the safety recall is expected to begin during early january 2012. owners may contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
NotesOwners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov .

The engine overheated despite the no indication of high temperatures from the temperature guage. we had it towed to the dealer who misdiagnosed it initially. we then drove it back from dealer (7 miles) to our home and it overheated again. now the dealer says at a bare minimum the head gasket needs replacement ($3200) and it could new an entirely new engine. i dont know how this is possible at 86,000 miles. after doing some research i have found others with this problem especially 4 cylinders but it is not recall. please help, i am unemployed and need this car!

Engine was leaking coolant. car was brought to repair shop where it was discovered that the engine cylinder's head bolts were stripped causing the leak. later was informed damage was due to the placement of the insulation foam rubber piece between the intake manifold and the engine block that created an uneven dispersion of heat, creating fatigue in the aluminum block allowing the headbolt to strip. contacted toyota who refused to acknowledge manufacturing defect. repairs totaled $2,000 due to this manufacturing error. *tr

Since i purchased my 2004 toyota highlander v6 it has very rough shifts. the transmissions seems to hesitate and lag when i try to accelerate during normal driving speeds, (i feel like i am on a carnival ride). i have had it to 3 different dealership in florida & they all say the same thing (that this model drives like that & it's the way you drive) funny tho when the mechanic drove it, with me in the car he said that it was the transmission. the underwriters in service think because i'm a women, it's the way i drive. i love my car but, this problem needs to be addressed by toyota & fixed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The temperature control on my 2004 toyota highlander keeps switching by itself from hot to cold and hot again. i have to actually turn the ac on even when the outside air coming in is moderate because the temperature control will switch by itself to hot and i can't switch it off. this occurs every time i drive and more so when i go over a bump or make a turn. i turn the vent on for outside air, but the temperature control gets locked on to hot and i can't turn it off. i have called the dealer and they have said that it would cost around $1000.00 to fix it. they want to replace the whole control unit. i have read various forums of numerous owners having this same issue. it seems to be a problem with toyota not leaving enough slack in a ribbon cable with 3 connections that connect from the circuit board to the control knob. the wires break off from the soldering on the knob. this sounds like a known defect to me that toyota is aware of, but chooses to ignore. apparently a cheaper fix is to re-solder the cable, but they refused to do that. i think they should be fixing this for free. this is just another example of toyota ignoring known issues with their vehicles.

My 2004 toyota highlander hesitates for a couple of seconds when i accelerate from about 40 to 50 mph such as getting onto a freeway. i have never experienced this in any other vehicle. i find this hesitation to be very disconcerting and makes me worry about merging into traffic. *jb

Excessive sulfur dioxide in 2004 v6 toyota highlander, there is already a tsb on the v4, but i own a v6 and have had this problem for almost a year now (stop and go and acceleration, there is a rotten-egg smell). i've been told by 2 toyota service stations that it is the gas. this is definitely not the case. i've tried every type of gas available.

There is a sulfur smell when i stop or back up on hills. the dealer said that they would replace the catalytic converter (parts are on order) and that this was a defect in some vehicles. if an owner mentions the smell, they do the repair under warranty. shouldn't owners be made aware of the problem? *nm
