One day the vsc trac, vsc off, brake, abs lights all came on the dash, shortly after this happened we received a recall notice in the mail stating this exact problem. so i made an appointment at our local toyota dealership for them to look at it and fix. the first time i dropped it off for the day they called after and said the machine to test the vehicle was down, and that it would be a day or two before it was repaired, well i needed my vehicle so i went a picked it up. about a month later i made another appointment and returned to the dealership where they finally tested my vehicle and proceeded to tell me that my vehicle did not fit the criteria for vin identification. i really do not know how this is possible considering all the information stated on the recall is exactly what is wrong with my vehicle. after days of research i have learned that multiple sensors and ecu needs to be replaced costing in the range of $2000.00 plus dollars. also i have read multiple consumer complaints just like this one. these lights are on the vehicle for a reason and toyota put the recall out for a reason so fix the problems!!!! *tr

Problem one: brake warning light comes on at random but then doesn't come back on at next restart of car. brake fluid and all mechanics are ok. braking doesn't seem to be affected but i am worried that there will be an abs failure that i'll ignore because of this faulty warning light. sometimes the stability control activates for no reason at low speed. problem two: frame is nearly rusted out. there is a recall for the similar tundra, and supposedly a recall for these particular sequoias in some states, but nothing comes up for my vehicle in indiana. vehicle, purchased from toyota dealer oxmoor toyota a year ago, is unsafe to drive. *tr

I have a 2003 toyota sequoia with the abs vsc light stays on all the time does not clear. diagnosed by toyota dealer and suggest to replace abs control unit costing 1500.00. called american toyota headquarters for assistance. they brushed me off. i told them i work for honda as a technician and told them honda is very good in assisting customers with after warranty repairs. still they did not care. i still have not have vehicle repaired. i'm hoping with all our complaints we sequoia owners will get that justified recall! *tr

Vsc and trac and abs lights come on 2003 sequoia with 38,000 miles for no reason. dealer says yaw rate sensor bad but have had problem with these lights since purchase in 2003. apparently, many sequoias from 2001 to present have problems like this. toyota needs to be do something.

We purchased a 2003 sequoia in august of 2003. the first thing that happened was the hood latch came off no biggie a $10 replacement everything a ok. next came the oil pressure gauge it always read low. i took it to the dealership and was fixed, the cause was a faulty sender, no charge to me. on a routine oil change i asked for the alarm to be check because it was always silent. to my surprise the horn had come off lucky for me it was still under warranty so it was replaced. all this time the vsc/ trac off light keeps coming on. the dealer can't come up with a problem and they say just restart the car and they should come off. now there is a grinding sound coming from my dash and the lights are coming on again so off to the dealership again. they can't duplicate the sound and the lights well maybe its my brakes and i have to get those replaced. i decided to wait on that. ok now since my kids like to ride with the back windows down and i can't stand the pressure and sound in the car. (it sound as if i'm in a helicopter) i decide to roll the back window down to stabalize the pressure and what do you know it doesn't work and now my vsc / trac off and abs lights are all on all the time . now i'm at the dealership again (everyone there knows me by name now) . the vsc/ trac off and abs light well that was a sensor that needed replacing and the window well guess what that was the grinding sound i had heard before . the motor needed to be replaced. be ready to pay about $800 in parts and labor. lucky for me i had purchased the extended warranty so i was left with just my deductible. i have owned 3 toyotas in the past and have always had that peace of mind its a toyota but now i'm not so sure. toyota is not what it used to be. i still love the space and comfort of the sequoia but would rather do without all the service trips to the dealership.

Vsc/traction control off light has illuminated on dash when vehicle is simply sitting in a parking space, pulling out of paved dry relatively flat driveway, and driving below 20 mph on dry pavement. problem is ongoing where the vsc/traction control off light comes on almost everyday. first time taken to dealership was told it would reset itself when suv is restarted. when taken to dealership second time a couple of months ago, was told an error was found and they reset it. still experiencing the problem and have scheduled a third appointment with dealership for january 13, 2004 to try to get problem resolved again.*ak

2003 toyota sequoia, vsc and abs lights came on and off several times @ 20k miles and now @ 80k miles. first time @ 20 k miles, dealer didn't find any problem so they said i might forget to tighten the gas cap...but now after 5 years, the vsc and abs light started popping up again when i was driving 60 mile/hour, i have brought the ca to dealer and this time they have chagred me almost $ 500 to get these lights came off including a sesires of unnecessary parts replacing and tune up. less than one month, these lights - vsc and abs came on again, brought back to dealer, they said it failed for another code which require another $ 500 to get it fixed. i was frustrated so i took the car back home, but i still feel unsafe when driving it. i think toyota should consider this issue and recall since so many customers have reported a similar issue - vsc and abs light intermittent issue.

We own a toyata sequoia ltd 2003 model year. we took the vehicle several times to the dealer regarding braking issue. if we ever used the emergency brake, for some reason the right side front and rear brakes will start to lock up, that would shake the suv and we had to pull over. the dealer never determined what the problem was even though we ended up paying for repairs that never made a difference. eventually we stopped using the emergency brake on our vehicle, that also stopped the right side wheels from locking up. during this period the car parked in our driveway also crashed into our garage and broke the garage doors. with emergency brakes on and in park, middle of the night we there was a loud bang, the suv had crashed into the garage; even though the suv was in park position gear and with emergency brakes on. *tr

Control panel dash 'brake' icon keeps coming on intermittently. the only way to get the brake icon on the dash panel not to illuminate is to turn the ignition off. the brake icon illuminates again after driving anywhere between a couple of miles to thousands of miles. a couple of toyota dealerships could not find any problem with the vehicle. the last time the brake icon illuminated, i drove it to the nearest toyota dealership and they plugged in a computer analyzer while the brake light was on and the computer did not find any problems (no error codes). this has been going on since i had 20000 miles. i am now at 128,000 miles. *tr

Abs, vsc/trac lights are on all came up at the same time. it was a rainy day in houston, tx. had to run 55mph at 65mph speed limit due to rain for safety pre-caution. at the time i reached my work place (approx 10miles from my residence), all 3-lights (abs, vsc, trac) turned on. i am the 2nd owner of this vehicle, acquired it from toyota dealer 15 october 2009. with this incident, got curious of any recalls, complaints or issues with 2003 sequoia. unfortunately, i just realized that i am among owners having the same issues. *tr

I own a 2003 toyota sequoia sr5 with 95000 miles. vsc, trac, and abs lights came on. dealership said that the codes are faulty ecu. cost of repair was $1700. the following week lights came back on. this time they tell me it is a faulty speed sensor on the front right. they recalibrated the vehicle and said if it comes back the cost of the repair is $400. following week, the lights come on, same code for the speed sensor, so i have it replaced. two days later, the lights are back on. not certain what will code this time. after reading several posts online, it looks like this is a recurring issue with this vehicle. so, i'm filing a complaint sense there hasn't been a recall.*tr

My sequoia 2003 with 31,000 miles, it showed brake light on. so i thought the brake pads need to be changed so i did. but the light still came on and off some days. about 4 weeks after, vsc lights and abs lights came on so i took it to the dealer and was told that the computer unit for tracking must be replaced and would cost me part and labor $1650. dealer pulled up codes c1241, c1231, c1223, and c1203. it seems from multiple identical complaints, toyota has made a faulty part and should make the recall for the safety of the customer. *tr

The dash vsc trac & abs skid control warning lights on my 2003 toyota sequoia 2wd have been on constantly for a period of time. they first appeared when i started my engine before i even placed the vehicle in drive. this is my second such failure of this system. the first occurrence was just weeks after the factory warranty expired. the original estimate to repair was about $2100. after some complaining, the dealer split the cost with me. this should be recalled by the manufacturer or, by government intervention due to the severity of the defect and the potential for accidents and/or death resulting from the defective computer system causing the vehicle to lock up and lose power. *tr

I have a 2003 toyota sequoia that has been regularly serviced at a toyota dealership and has had no abs brake issues until this incident. abruptly as i was driving, all the vsc/trac lights on the dashboard came on, there was a grinding noise under the car and the car came to a halt. i took the car to the dealer the next day (as it happened on a sunday) and was told this was a known defect in sequoias, but as the car was past it's warranty period it would cost me $1800 to fix. if this is a known defect that has the capability of causing a serious accident because of the abruptness of the issue while driving, i don't understand why this is not a recall issue. will it take someone having a fatal crash because of this to get some action on this issue? *tr

I have had an issue with my 2003 toyota sequoia. the abs and vsc trac lights came on. i have searched online to find out about this problem and have found it to be a habitual problem. on the morning of may 24 i had a collision with a deer. all four brakes locked up and i went into a skid and hit the deer. the things that i have read is its a electrical problem but it is not. toyota has an issue here that puts its owners in an unsafe situation. this needs to be fixed. if there were habitual seat belt issues or airbag issues this would be taken care of. this is a major safety issue because i though i had working abs brakes and due to some kind of design failure i did not. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 toyota sequoia. while driving between 5-10 mph on normal road conditions, the contact heard a noise and felt excessive vibration when the brake pedal was depressed. the failure occurs whenever the vehicle is in operation. the traction control and vsc warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel and remained lit until the engine was turned off. the vehicle was taken to the authorized dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician stated that the failure was related to the anti-skid computer system and recommended that it be replaced. the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure mileage was 60,000 and current mileage was 63,000.

2003 toyota skid control computer, i am writing to request that a formal complaint be filed to toyota. i recently took my car into my local toyota dealership because of a few lights that we on in my dash. the specific lights were the vsc, vsc off and the abs lights. after doing some research i see that this is a fairly common problem with toyota and their skid control computers. the problem is that it is not covered under the powertrain warranty and is a very expensive part to have replaced. my quote was for $1800 excluding tax. i purchased the vehicle with 47,000 miles and was offered an extended warranty up to 60,000, but it was a very expensive extended warranty so i decided to pass. the manufactures warranty for my car was 55,000 miles i believe and the lights came on at 55,500 miles....of course. i sincerely hope that there can be some sort of resolve for this such as a recall of the skid control computer or changing this issue to be covered under the power train section of the warranty as it is unfair for there to be so many people to be having the same problem around the same mileage and some of those people have serious consequences to the computers malfunction such as accidents and possible death. please take whatever action necessary to solve this unnecessary issue. *tr
06/05/2008660001
Toyota sequoia 2003, vtrac and abs lights came up on the dash during a very wet interstate trek to michigan from california. had no cruise control before this, the cruise control failed the year before during the same wet trek across country! the toyota dealer in saginaw michigan told us that the computer controlling the vtrac and abs was displaying fault codes and needed to be replaced, cost $1200. this is a 5 year old vehicle with 70k miles on it now (the fault happened around 66k miles) which is now much harder to handle under heavy braking, which we need more and more with the low quality drivers out there. if the gas prices weren't so high, this truck would be out of here here, but we can't afford to sell it for the current value, and buy another vehicle, so this suv will now be limited to trips where we need the storage/towing capacity. so, even though we have 2 cars, we only really have 1 1/2 now. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 toyota sequoia. the contact stated that the abs/dsc warning light intermittently illuminated on the instrument panel. the dealer assured the contact that the issue was nothing to worry about and was not a big deal. the issue was later discovered to be a communication error between the skid control and the ecm. the service dealer stated that the ecm should be replaced; however, the steering angle on the vehicle was also off and a re-calibration was performed. afterwards, while driving between 30-40 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal and heard a loud thumping noise. she felt vibrations coming from the brake pedal. while slowing down and switching from braking to acceleration, the vehicle hesitated to accelerate and coasted momentarily until reaching full acceleration. the failure mileage was 83,106 and current mileage was 99,000.

On 4 occasions dash light indicating vsc and brake problem appeared. each time the braking of the 2003 toyota sequoia was compromised. each time the truck was brought to toyota service center for repair. each toyota said they could not replicate the problem but replaced skid computer anyway. 8/20/08 problem recurred with dash brake indicator light coming on. braking again compromised, heard loud clunking sound coming from car while driving. immediately brought to scottsdale toyota service center. again, said they could not replicate problem and returned car with no repair. called toyota customer service and filed a complaint. toyota indicated complaint is now on record. problem with dash brake light coming on and braking diminished recurred again 8/27/08. after shutting engine off, indicator no longer lit and braking back to normal. i fear for both my safety and my families. simple google search indicates a large number of sequoia owners are having the same problem. *tr

I purchased a 2003 toyota sequoia in november 2007. it has been at the dealer for the same problem 5 times. they just had a rep to come to this location to test the vehicle and they cannot find the problem. this problem has caused me to almost get in an accident as well as my wife. the skid control light will flash after making a turn (under normal conditions, going very slow) and the vehicle will not allow you to accelerate for 2 to 3 seconds. this problem occurs intermittently. it may go a week or 2 without occurring (depending on how much it is driven), and then the problem will surface. they replaced the main computer module, but the bottom line is that the problem still exist and this could become a serious matter for my family. it is not my fault that the problem does not occur when the dealership checks it or that an error code does not show up. the problem is there and something should be done about this. *tr

2003 toyota sequoia (2wd) without warning the vsc/trac system engaged while turning on dry pavement causing a loss in acceleration. this was the initial incident which was followed by multiple other incidents at random intervals. incidents occurred while making both left and right turns from a turning or stopping position. trac off button does not disengage the system as indicated in the owner's manual from a low speed. local dealership ran diagnostic test and recommended new tires/brakes but could not identify any problems with the vsc system other than the vsc system had engaged. after 4 new tires and new rear brakes were installed service tech drove vehicle and experienced the issue. he recommended documenting when the incidents occurred and under what circumstances in order to determine repair options. the vsc system continues to engage randomly causing a loss in acceleration when this occurs and is dangerous if driver has need to pull into traffic in instances such as turning onto major roadways. *tr

When we first bought the vehicle the trac system lights kept coming on and the brakes felt mushy; we took it in to toyota and they replaced the computer system which seemed to rectify the problem. then about 9 mo to a year later the lights kept coming on again and the brakes failed twice, toyota stated they would replace the brake system fluid and the master cylinder at our cost because we had taken it elsewhere and they felt that it had contaminated brake fluid, which our mechanic stated in writing was not. although we tried numerous times to have toyota fix it under warranty; we got the vehicle repaired through our own mechanic and then shortly later the brakes failed resulting in a crash on the freeway. when it was decided that the seq would be repaired via ins there was a code that showed up on the computer system that showed that brakes indeed did fail; however when taking it to toyota the same code did not show up. the vehicle did well, however we live by a dirt road and when traveling down the road or going around a corner quickly the trac system lights go on and now the vehicle acts like it won't go when the trac system is on and you slow down or start up again--at present the system is turned off; it has really never worked correctly. *nm

I purchased my vehicle from sunnyvale toyota in oct of 2002. it is a 2003 toyota sequoia. from the time i reached home found multiple problems. start with hub caps not seated correctly, defective roof racks, entry door molding with inked print on them. went on to a defective air conditioner compressor, pungent awful smell from the ac, defective radio/ cd changer. brakes are spongy and don't respond well. if you pump it once it works well. the vehicle repeatedly veers to the right. they have checked it at least 15 times. there is hair in the paint. i went through the ncds process and ended up with a judgment to have them repair the veering problem and air conditioning. toyota never complied and ncds closed the case without my consent. i worked with toyota and they finally worked on the trouble. i got a new set of tires but the veering returned. what happens is the tires wear more on the outside of the front right tire. as you rotate the trouble goes away until the tire wears and the problem becomes more pronounces. now the tires are bald and ncds is giving me trouble to reopen the case or stand behind the arbitrators judgment. now even the door molding are coming off even with no damage. *jb

I was driving my car as usual to church on sunday 7/29/2007 when i noticed my check engine light, the trac off light and the vsc lights were on after reading the owners manual i determined that the car needed to be taken to toyota. i took the car in and was told that the repair was not covered and it would cost me almost 2500.00 to repair. when talking to the associate, he explained to me that the systems that had gone bad had to do with the way the vehicle will be controlled while driving and the anti-lock brakes. when i questioned him about the safety of driving the vehicle he told me that people had been driving without those units for years and my breaks may lock up but don't try to stop while going fast. i informed him that toyota had replaced the computer board for my breaks earlier (brake lights still coming on) and asked if it was possible that these things were going bad at the same time. he said it was not. i feel that this is a safety hazard to me and my family and should be taken care of. in trying to find some kind of solution to this problem, i read on tundra solutions where others have had this same problem. i was also told that both will need to be replaced at the same time. 2500.00 is a lot of money for a single parent. nothing was done to correct this problem. what do i do? *tr

2003 sequoia limited vsc / trac control lights have been on almost continuously since 3/1/2007, indicating that the stability control and traction control were not functioning. at various times the abs kicked in even though the brakes were not applied. in wet conditions on 3/17/07, the suv did not properly respond to brake or steering, causing the suv to drift into the oncoming lane. fortunately, there was no traffic in the lane at the time. this was a huge safety issue. at the dealer, codes c1241, c1231, c1223, and c1203 came up. diagnosis - translate and skid control computers needed to be replaced. toyota tsbs br002-03 and br003-03 appeared to be related, and lead me to believe there was a known flaw in computer logic. *ak

Trac, vsc, brake light had been coming on and then going out. this particular incident involved them coming on during a turn into traffic at which time all power was lost nearly causing an accident. dealer treated this as 2 different problems:an induction service was performed for the hesitation at my expense, and a brake booster gasket and assembly were installed under the warranty. the lights continued to go off and on from time to time, but the car did not lose power again after this fix.the lights continued to come on and off intermittently until in august 2006 the check engine light and vcs/trac lights came on and would not go out. this time, my dealer replaced the oxygen sensor at my expense. now, with 70,000 miles on 9-26-07 the vsc/trac & check engine lights came on while traveling on the road and will not go out on turning off the engine as they sometimes did in the past. i believe after reading all the complaints about this problem on various internet sites some sort of action should be taken at toyota's expense. i am also filing a report about the new rear window motor and hatch release handle i had to replace in july on this vehicle which also is mentioned in many reports i've read on the internet. i can't tell you how many failures on the light situation i've had because they've been in the dozens. *tr

I am another victim of the ongoing problem for 2003 toyota sequoia, vcs traction control light on. so this past weekend being on a trip the light come on and we took it to the dealership and gaves us a surprise repair $1,448.50 for part 89541-0c062 and 896300c011 $751.54 so with labor some in the 2,500 dls. so i told the service guy what was the risk of driving this unit like that. in my own words is like having an 1980's suburban. my husband did a research on the internet on tundrasulutions etc. and there are a lot of cases of this problem arousing around 40,000 miles or less. we have a 4 year old son and we are scared to drive this truck without of any of the safety features now i was told that the traction control computer and the main computer needed to replace and that this will disable abs and traction controls. so this means that i have a 1980 suburban. we are very upset because we call toyota and they can't do anything about it, they refer me to the dealership service manager that probably can offer me a discount outside warranty. we need nhtsa to start investigating this issue there are thousands of users that already paid for this repair that don't even know how to file a complaint. don't let this issue get out of hand, please don't waint until there are people hurt. my truck is worth around 14,000 the repair is 2500 the repair is 18% worth of the whole vehicle. toyota knows about this problem if they sell a car with defective parts they should replace it. *tr

The brakes on my 2003 toyota sequoia are obviously undersized for the vehicle weight. although factory equipped for towing, this is exasperated when pulling a trailer. there is no way i can stop if following at the recommended interval and the person in front of me stops hard. i have had to veer onto the shoulder numerous times to avoid a rear-end collision, and i maintain a greater distance than is suggested between my vehicle and the vehicle in front of me. i feel this should be a safety recall. toyota has admitted a design flaw by issuing a technical service bulletin on how to install larger brakes on this vehicle. *tr

My 2003 sequoia has 31,000 miles and already the front brakes have been replaced three times, back brakes replaced once and the rotars resurfaced three times. from what i've read on the internet others have had the same problems. my friend who had a 2001 model had the vehicle taken in and the whole brake system replaced due to a tsb. when i called the dealers they told me that the tsb only affected the years 2000 & 2001. however, the 2003 seems to have problems, too! i've never had brake problems until this vehicle. the first time i had the vehicle serviced at 6700 miles the service technician told me my front brakes had premature wearing and accused me of braking too hard but agreed to have to have them replaced under warranty and the rooters were machined. the second time the service engine light came on and at 17,500 miles our front brakes were touching metal to metal. the roters were also resurfaced at a cost of about $500.00. at that time the service manager convinced us that this was normal i've had other mechanics say it is not. at 30,000 miles i was infromed that my front and back brakes needed to be replaced and the roters again were resurfaced. we went to another mechanic and paid $400. i've read that the braking system on the sequoia is inadequate, tundras are having similar problems and the calipers are too small thus causing warping and the brakes to wear out prematurely.

Braking system warning lights - on four different occasions, the brake system warning lights have come on requiring that i pull the vehicle off the road and shut the ignition off to reset the lights. error codes in the computer have resulted in replacement of brake booster / master cylinder assembly replacement, brake fluid sensor check, brake pedal switch adjustment. braking on this vehicle is inconsistant with overall concerns regarding brake system performance. *ak

Our 2003 toyota sequoia has the vsc, traction light, emergency brake light, and trac off light are all coming on. the dealer told us that we need a brake job and the problem that i have is that this will be the third set of brakes in 25,000 miles. i have been reading quite a bit on this same problem with other sequoia owners on the edmunton's website forum and it is concerning to me for the saftey of my family and my self not too mention the brake jobs at every 7,000 miles. the dealer tells me that this is normal for brakes with heavier vehicles but that has not been my experience with suv's in the past.*ak
