The toyota sequoia went nose down and started to make a grinding noise pulling hard to the right. loss of power happened and i had no control. i tried to accelerate but it seemed like there was no response. it has done this three times. i feel like i will hit someone or someone will hit me!

My wife was on freeway, driving our 2003 toyota sequoia limited 2wd, when vsc light lit up and a buzzer sounded. at the same time, her vehicle started to deaccelerate on its own, causing vehicles behind her to have to brake to keep from rear-ending her vehicle. this was accompanied by a horrific grinding and banging sound. my wife found a safer place to pull to the side of the freeway and stop the vehicle. a tow truck was called and vehicle was flat-bed towed to repair garage.

The vsc trac light has been on (showing it is off), along with the check engine light. occasionally the brake light comes on too while driving. today the abs light came on. the only code that is coming up is for a weak o2 sensor. *tr

One day the vsc trac, vsc off, brake, abs lights all came on the dash, shortly after this happened we received a recall notice in the mail stating this exact problem. so i made an appointment at our local toyota dealership for them to look at it and fix. the first time i dropped it off for the day they called after and said the machine to test the vehicle was down, and that it would be a day or two before it was repaired, well i needed my vehicle so i went a picked it up. about a month later i made another appointment and returned to the dealership where they finally tested my vehicle and proceeded to tell me that my vehicle did not fit the criteria for vin identification. i really do not know how this is possible considering all the information stated on the recall is exactly what is wrong with my vehicle. after days of research i have learned that multiple sensors and ecu needs to be replaced costing in the range of $2000.00 plus dollars. also i have read multiple consumer complaints just like this one. these lights are on the vehicle for a reason and toyota put the recall out for a reason so fix the problems!!!! *tr

Vsc trac, vsc off, brake, abs lights... all on, all at once.there is obviously a quality control issue with these that toyota does not want to be on the hook for. many others went to the national highway safety program and filed a complaint. if they get enough of these they will go to the manufacturer and issue a recall. ## vin passed ## toyota sequoia 2003 ## *tr

My 2003 toyota sequoia's abs/vsc/trac lights are on. now the brake light is coming on intermittently. we've had the rear and front brake pads changed recently. recently while we were coming to a slow stop at a gas station, i was pressing the brake and it made a loud grinding noise. it felt like the brakes were going to give out. immediately after, the brake light went on. i turned the engine off and the brake light was gone. a few times while at a stop light, the car will give a little jerk as if being hit from the back. called toyota customer care center to file a complaint with them regarding the issue with the lights and brakes issue. did internet research and this is a very common complaint among sequoia owners...yet they still don't have a safely recall on this vehicle. the toyota representative said there was a recall for the ecu skid control system - but that my vin number didn't fall under the recall. we have taken it to an independent mechanic and they pulled the following codes: c1223, c1244, c1247 and c1310. it seems that if this is a problem that many sequoia owners are experiencing, toyota should fix it. please help! *tr

It was raining, i was going aruond a turn ,10 - 15 mph the back tire started to spin, the vsc trac, vsc off,and abs lights came on, this is after the trk. went to the dealer to check out a recall on the vsc. they said it was'nt under a recall, we parked the sequoia and wont drive it untill it's repaired, safety reasons, i moved it , tryed to go over a curb on an angle and the right rear tire just was spining on the asphalt road. this cant be good for the sequoia ,its 4 wheel drive, and its making a noise, in the drive train ,clunking?? it slides in the rain (bad ) and wont stop on wet roads very well , it slides to a stop. i dont have alot of time to research the vsc problem ,but it sounds like all the sequoia's 03-05 have the same problem, for the cost of this trk. i hope toyota will fix this problem.

This 2003 toyota sequoia has performed quite well. the other day, the vsc and vsc trac lights came on along with the check engine light. i did not detect any change in the way the car performed or handled when this occured. a trip to the dealer, (along with the mandatory $105 diagnostic charge), resulted in the claim that the oxygen sensor and yaw rate sensor need to be replaced for about $1200. in my opinion, it is highly unlikely for two unrelated problems such as the oxygen sensor and yaw rate sensor to fail at the exact same time. toyota service departments have a long, slimy record of incorrectly diagnosing problems and unnecessary replacing expensive parts in order to increase the size of the repair bill. i believe that this may be one of those occasions. a quick internet search shows that there are many thousands of toyota owners who have reported this problem. most have also given the toyota service centers failing marks for how the problem was evaluated and repaired. it may be possible that the oxygen sensor needs to be replaced. this is a common failure as a vehicle ages. the yaw rate sensor is a critical vehicle handling component that should be engineered to last for the life of the vehicle. if this component has failed, (which i doubt), it should be repaired by the manufacturer at no cost to the vehicle owner. the alleged yaw rate sensor failure is suspicious for another reason. several months ago i received a recall notice relating to this exact problem. the car had not shown any problems up to the time of the recall repair. a couple months after the so-called repair, this problem pops up. hmmm. i don't think toyota is telling the whole truth about this problem and obviously the recall did not solve the problem.

My wife and i own a 2003 toyota sequoia, which we purchased new in 2003. we use it sparingly, so it only had 18,743 original miles on it as of december 23, 2010 (a date referred to again below). the vehicle has been regularly maintained by copeland toyota, brockton, ma, and was trouble-free until recently. on november 23, 2010, i was pulling into a parking space with my wife in the vehicle. i had come to almost a complete stop in the parking space with my foot on the brake pedal, when the engine revved and the vehicle lurched forward into the next parking space in front of me (fortunately unoccupied). on december 17, 2010, again with my wife in the vehicle, i had backed out of my driveway onto the street and had the vehicle at almost a complete stop with my foot on the brake pedal when the engine revved and the vehicle lurched backwards up a hill behind me. on both occasions i was able to apply pressure on the brake pedal to finally stop the vehicle. i checked the floor mat, as did the toyota dealer, and found no problem with it. i took the vehicle to the toyota dealer on december 20, 2010. the service advisor professed to not knowing what caused the lurching, said there was no related recall on this particular vehicle, and told me that their diagnostic computer showed codes in the system indicating a faulty vehicle stability control engine control unit (vsc ecu). it took the dealer four days to get toyota to release a replacement ecu, which was installed on december 23, 2010 at a cost (materials and labor) of $650.00. this was clearly a dangerous situation; we were fortunate that it occurred where it did.

2003 toyota sequoia, vsc and abs lights came on and off several times @ 20k miles and now @ 80k miles. first time @ 20 k miles, dealer didn't find any problem so they said i might forget to tighten the gas cap...but now after 5 years, the vsc and abs light started popping up again when i was driving 60 mile/hour, i have brought the ca to dealer and this time they have chagred me almost $ 500 to get these lights came off including a sesires of unnecessary parts replacing and tune up. less than one month, these lights - vsc and abs came on again, brought back to dealer, they said it failed for another code which require another $ 500 to get it fixed. i was frustrated so i took the car back home, but i still feel unsafe when driving it. i think toyota should consider this issue and recall since so many customers have reported a similar issue - vsc and abs light intermittent issue.

On several occasions after backing out of the driveway and beginning to accelerate the vsc light comes on and a strange sound is heard from under the truck. the tires are either slipping on snow at the time or loose gravel leftover from the snow. toyota dealership said we need to replace the ecu unite for $1000 because it's not covered in the may 2010 recall based on our vin number. *tr

I have a 2003 toyota sequoia that has a faulty skid control unit and needs the ecu replaced. although toyota has issued a recall notice for 2003 sequoias for this problem, i was told that my car is not included on that list since they are only targeting certain cars from that year, not all cars with this problem. i was told by the dealership that it will cost me close to $3,000 to fix my car, which i cannot afford. i have only 35,000 miles on this vehicle. i have two young children that i drive in this car and have had some very close calls due to the car not functioning properly due to the faulty vsc. i feel that our safety is in jeopardy due to toyota's refusal to fix a problem that they know about and are indeed recalling for. my 2003 toyota sequoia should be included in the recall list and fixed like all of the other 2003 sequoias with this problem. thank you for your help. *tr

Abs, vsc/trac lights are on all came up at the same time. it was a rainy day in houston, tx. had to run 55mph at 65mph speed limit due to rain for safety pre-caution. at the time i reached my work place (approx 10miles from my residence), all 3-lights (abs, vsc, trac) turned on. i am the 2nd owner of this vehicle, acquired it from toyota dealer 15 october 2009. with this incident, got curious of any recalls, complaints or issues with 2003 sequoia. unfortunately, i just realized that i am among owners having the same issues. *tr

Vech. skid control alarm and reaction takes place without warning or justification. vehicle brakes come on with warning and car shakes because the brakes which are automatically being applied and brake anti skid system is activated. this happened when traveling approx 45 mph. thought i was going to die because of the violent reaction of the vech. this has happen more than five times and toyota wants me to pay $2,100 to correct their engineering error. should i submit a bill for mental anguish? *tr

I own a 2003 toyota sequoia sr5 with 95000 miles. vsc, trac, and abs lights came on. dealership said that the codes are faulty ecu. cost of repair was $1700. the following week lights came back on. this time they tell me it is a faulty speed sensor on the front right. they recalibrated the vehicle and said if it comes back the cost of the repair is $400. following week, the lights come on, same code for the speed sensor, so i have it replaced. two days later, the lights are back on. not certain what will code this time. after reading several posts online, it looks like this is a recurring issue with this vehicle. so, i'm filing a complaint sense there hasn't been a recall.*tr

I have a 2003 toyota sequoia 4x4. i had the 60,000 mile service done at piercey toyota milpitas, ca. i received a call from the service department advising me that the vehicle battery needed replacement, which i authorized. when i picked up my vehicle, i noticed that the vsc/vsc traction light was on and would remain on. i brought the vehicle back to piercey toyota, and they advised me that the vsc computer needed to be replaced. the cost for replacement was $2,000. i declined repair until i could do some research. i have checked the web, and apparently there are numerous complaints regarding the premature failure of the vsc computer. your nhtsa action number is pe08072. i have no way of proving it, but i think when the new battery was installed, the vsc computer was damaged, since it had worked fine until the 60,000 mile service/vehicle battery replacement. *tr

While driving along at city street speeds, during dry weather, on paved roads, my vsc trac and trac off lights come on. no other warning lights come on. then a buzzer sounds for about 3 seconds. then at the same time, a strange grinding sound comes from underneath the car, and the brakes seem to start working for no reason. i quickly pull over, turn off the car. i check the outside of the car and see no indication of running over anything. i then start the car and all the lights are back to normal (off). this happens about 2-3 times a month, for about a month or 2 now. i have not been able to determine any problems. *tr

I have had the same problem as detailed in nhtsa action no. pe08072. several times, my vehicle stability control system has activated unexpectedly. every time, it happened when i was at a stop sign. when i accelerated to turn right, the vsc system activated and i lost power to the vehicle, half-way pulled out in a turn. after several seconds, power returned. *tr

I bought 2003 toyota sequoia. i am getting the vsc traction control and abs light on. checked with other sequoia owner and they have similar problem. i went to checked the car and was told that the ecu computer is faulty. the faulty ecu needs to be replaced. since this is wide spread problem with 03 sequoia it should be recalled. this is a safety issue. here are the codes: c1203, c1223,c1244. *tr

For no reason, the traction control system lights (vsc trac) have lit up and will not turn off. after researching the matter, it appears this is a common failure of the vsc traction control ecu. the approximate cost to repair is $2000.00. this item is currently being considered for a recall as its a widespread problem for all toyota sequoias. *tr the vehicle does in fact experience the occasional locking up of the brakes coupled with the loss of ability to accelerate. this occurs several times a week and usually occurs after coming to a stop and you begin to accelerate forward again. as you begin to accelerate, the vehicle suddenly loses power and the brakes lock up and make a loud griding noise. while this occurs, if you step on the brake pedal, its very firm and you can feel a vibration in the pedal. *smch

2003 sequoia bought in nov 2002. currently only have 20,474 miles. 1-1/2 yrs after buying car, brake light kept coming on. took to 3 different dealership and no one could figure out what was wrong. finally, on 4th attempt, they said it was skid control board. they initially tried to charge me to fix it, but ended up doing under good will. now, a few months later, the abs, vsc and track lights are coming on and the dealership said i need to replace the yaw sensor. they know and i know it is all related to the skid control system, but they want to charge 423.00 + tax to replace it. i think it should be free, considering the common problem they have with the skid control system. my warranty has expired and i don't have an extended warranty. *jb

2003 toyota sequoia (2wd) without warning the vsc/trac system engaged while turning on dry pavement causing a loss in acceleration. this was the initial incident which was followed by multiple other incidents at random intervals. incidents occurred while making both left and right turns from a turning or stopping position. trac off button does not disengage the system as indicated in the owner's manual from a low speed. local dealership ran diagnostic test and recommended new tires/brakes but could not identify any problems with the vsc system other than the vsc system had engaged. after 4 new tires and new rear brakes were installed service tech drove vehicle and experienced the issue. he recommended documenting when the incidents occurred and under what circumstances in order to determine repair options. the vsc system continues to engage randomly causing a loss in acceleration when this occurs and is dangerous if driver has need to pull into traffic in instances such as turning onto major roadways. *tr

On my 2003 sequoia with 50k miles, i believe i have an extremely dangerous situation! on turns, especially right turns when trying to accelerate into fast moving traffic i experience a total loss of power with no acceleration. i can pumping the gas pedal and press it to the floor, but i just coast slowly into the oncoming traffic and wait to be possibly rear ended. this happens in dry road conditions, and seems to occur more often when the engine is cold. my skid/traction lights blink for a second or two, then i re-gain engine power another second or so after that. i have also noticed my steering has become very stiff when driving in very slow situations 2-4 mph (parking lots, driveway etc.), i don't know if this is related. thank you, dave frazee - strongsville, ohio. *nm

Vsc llights in my 2003 toyota sequoia have come on multiple times, the car has already been back to the dealer for repar 4 times, it seems that they either do not understand what is causing the problem, or toyota is unwilling to admit that there is a serious defect in the car. the vsc light seems to now come on in the morning when the car is cold, and will then shut off if the car is restarted. dealer has been notified and now waiting to see if any actions are taken. *jb

Since taking ownership of my vehicle we have been having trouble with it. when taking a turn the vsc skid light comes on and the accelerator looses power. the vehicle doesn't stall but the gas pedal is unresponsive leaving you stuck for 2-5 seconds. it is extremely dangerous and i have almost been in an accident numerous times. we have taken it back to the dealership multiple times and they can't correct the problem because they can't replicate it. we had a district manager for toyota look at the vehicle and couldn't help us either. however, he did tell us that the newer model toyotas have been updated so this problem doesn't happen. that leads me to believe they are aware of the defect. it is happening multiple times a day now and i am afraid for the safety of myself and my children. i need help. *tr

2003 sr5 sequoia with 4700 mi, and two accelerator problems: 1. surging from a stop and when accelerating out of a turn. 2. a dead accelerator for a period of six to ten seconds when accelerating out of a turn. the engine does not die it just remains at an idle for the six to ten seconds while the driver is pressing on the accelerator pedal. these two problems are not constant they just happen from time to time. three trips to the dealer so far results in the response unable to duplicate problem. the first failure date is the day we drove the vehicle home for the first time and continues to now.
