| My daughter was driving 1999 toyota camry solara. when crossing highway at intersection, the car hesitated on acceleration and she was struck on the passenger side rear. she states she had plenty of time to cross but the car just wouldn't go. also, despite impacts from several angles, no airbags deployed. *tr | |||

| I purchased the car new in september 1998. on december 13, 1999 i was involved in an accident. i was driving to work that morning on a major interstate, i-285 east, it was around 7:30 am and traffic was bumper to bumper. traffic began moving and i was going approximately 40 mph when suddenly the truck in front of me slammed on his brakes and i hit him. the nose of my care was smashed so hard that the hood crumpled into a tepee and was pushed back into the windshield causing the glass to crack. i couldn't open my doors because the impact had pushed the doors back so they overlapped the back quarter panels and were jammed. luckily no one was hurt. this was a dead on front impact accident in a practically brand new car and the airbags did not deploy. there was not a single inch of the front end that didn't take the impact so there is no way it missed the sensors. the damage to the car ended up being over $10,000.00. the airbags seriously malfunctioned and i was lucky that i wasn't injured.*jb | |||

| Since 2007 i have noticed some type of engine difficulty with the toyota. the engine shuts off while running (it is an automatic transmission.) also, alternator and battery receive too high a charge resulting in computer system overheating. i have replaced both alternator and battery several times, much more than necessary and problem remains with the obd system. this also causes engine to have surges of power while driving affecting cruise control... i don't know if this is also a problem relative to current toyota issues-online someone has a 2002 solara with same problem. my parents have 01 solara-no problems reported. my old lexus had similar problems my 1989 celica was a great car. would not own again-would like to sell nut concerned for safety of any future owner(s.) *tr | |||

| We went to the dealer today, armed with an amazing array of internet information. we were initially sent to the main receptionist who when asked who's handling the sludge problems? at first didn't seem to understand the meaning of the word, then when my fiance pulled out a whole packet of information and put it in front of her and said this problem, which i'm sure you're aware of she then aid, you took me off guard and then stopped the gsm or sm and asked him to talk to us. when in his office, we said, we bought a car from you and have sludge and the car has sat a month, he referred us to the repair department. we walked though the hall and over to repair and spoke with the manager of that department. he asked for the vin and the mileage, after we said we have a bad sludge problem. he pulled the vehicle up in the computer then asked if anyone had removed the intake to see if it was sludge. we answered that of course we had taken it to two different mechanics, first because we thought it was an oil leak, burning and causing all the smoke. both mechanics knew immediately that it was sludge, although the one was nice enough to run diagnostics to prove there was no leak. we were told the car could not be driven. after telling the manager that two mechanics had seen it, he asked if it could be driven to the dealership. we told him, since it is shuddering and smoking like a freight train, both mechanics advised that the whole engine would seize up, and we would not drive it. he then gave us a number to a towing company for the dealership that would tow at no cost to us to the dealership and agreed to look at the car tomorrow. when i asked what it would cost me, he said nothing, if it is sludge. we'll see. if this man is as honest as he seems, he's not only rare, but amazing. of course, he could call in a day or two and say it was my fault and want oil change receipts. unfortunatlly for the dealership, i have them. | |||

| Sludge build up in engine caused engine failure. my engine is going to be inspected by toyota at their griffin ga outlet on september 2, 2003. i anticipate the runaround and i am getting all the info i can to argue my case. my engine suddenly is using one quart per 300 miles and when i took it for an oil change i suddenly discovered it was so gunked up it would not accept oil unless poored in very slowly. | |||

| I was driving my 1999 toyota solara, home in the rain going 50 mph when a street light turned yellow, i started to put on my brakes, but the car was not slowing down in time to stop before the intersection, so i took my foot off the brakes and just went through the yellow light. i felt that if i was driving any other one of my cars that i would have had plenty time to stop. when you take the foot of the gas on this car it does not slow down automatically like other vehicles. when i first got this 1999 toyota solara i got a ticket for not stopping at a stop sign. there to i also though i had plenty of time to stop, but it seems like the engine is fighting against the brake when i try to stop. since then when i come up to a stop sign i start braking much further back than i us to. even when i'm stopped at 700 rpm, the cars seem to want to start going. i always the first one to start off when a stop light , because as soon as i take my foot of the gas the cars goes 5 mph with out even putting my foot on the gas. the drive-ability of this car is the same as owning a 1970's pumped out muscle car. i have also noticed that on the newer camry based toyota cars that the disc's on the disc brakes are twice as big as my solara's disk brakes, which means to me that toyota knows that there was a problem with these brakes. to the novice driver i would say that the solara is a dangerous car to drive. *tr | |||
