This is and addendum to odi number 10299896. please check consumeraffairs.com there are literally hundreds of toyota owners that have had their rusted truck frames inspected by a toyota dealer, with no results, and they filed complaints on consumeraffairs.com. with exact same rusted frame rust problems, quite a few with salvage titles, and many with trucks 2001 thru 2007, which toyota has abandoned. all potential road hazards at some point. owners are completely at a loss how to have toyota address the problem, i actually found nhtsa on the consumeraffairs.com site, most have not. one owner had his truck inspected at toyota dealer, was told it was the worst case they had ever reviewed, but due to salvaged title, replacement was denied, owner was driving truck approx 2 weeks later and frame broke completely in two while driving down highway?????? *tr

Tl* the contact submitted an email and requested that the official ivoq be written verbatim to his submitted email: several weeks ago, i received a letter from toyota usa stating their service campaign on tacoma's frames rusting in specific cold climates. i followed the instructions and contacted a-1 toyota in new haven, ct where they inspected my truck. the service manager told me that the frame literally sagged at the rust penetration points while on the lift. they gave me a loaner car the next day and said they will contact me regarding purchasing the truck back because the frame rust was so bad. another couple of days passed and i received a phone call from the company (isg) handling the program. they informed me that after they ran a carfax and saw a salvage title in the past, that they will not honor the service campaign for my truck. i bought this truck on 6/12/07 and put a lot of money into her. now for the really bizarre part...... in jan of 2010, i was following a local fellow (who was injured in a motorcycle accident years ago) on his 3-wheeled bike so he could repair a flat tire. i had my flashers and headlights on and going aprox 5mph. i was trying to protect him as he rode along the side of the road (aprox 9:00 am). i looked into my rearview mirror and noticed a volvo xc-90 coming up behind me fast. the speed limit was 30mph and he was easily doing 50. he rear-ended me and pushed my truck up next to where the fellow was on his bike. the other driver was cited for the accident. if i was not in my truck, but a sedan he would have caused serious injury, but he actually rode up under my truck. the insurance company totalled it and i bought it back and had it repaired. a second-hand bed, some body work, exhaust items and bumper was all she needed. i had to have it flat-bedded to ct dmv for a full safety inspection and to the dealer for air-bag recertification before i could even re-register it. the title now states rebuilt title only on it.

Recently spoke with several toyota tacoma owners who related frame rust problem. checked truck and found rust on frame(fingers went through frame in spots. took vehicle to toyota service and was told not to drive truck due to excessive rust on frame. then they returned the truck to me to drive home?? to return in two days when they would have a loaner truck for me. returned truck to toyota and after a huge hassle they arranged to rental vehicle for me to drive. now toyota dealer has kept the truck because it is unsafe to drive. i am waiting for someone from toyota to contact me - have been told i qualify for a buyout. the dealer/service dept. has now washed their hands of the problem, telling me i have to wait for toyota to contact me but have no idea how long it will take - weeks maybe. in addition, i was not planning to buy a new vehicle - didn't want the expense but may not have a choice.

I have received a letter from toyota motor co. along with 814,000 other owners of toyota tacoma's built between 1995-2000 stating that our frame rust warranty has been extended for 15 years from date of original purchase as a result of a frame rust because a process that was not done by the frame supplier to toyota. if frame is found to have rust toyota motor co. will buyback vehicle at 150% of highest kbb retail value. toyota expects to buyback approx. 50% of vehicles still on the road. most of these vehicles will be from the central and northeastern parts of the us but they have bought back vehicles in all parts of the nation including california. this campaign began in mid-2008. so now i have a vehicle that has some surface rust on the frame but not enough to warrant the buyback program at this time but in the mean time while the frame rusts into the toyota buyback standards my kbb value decreases, i drive around a vehicle with compromised frame integrity in the event of an accident, and no one wants to buy my vehicle because it has this latent problem now well established/distributed throughout the media. *tr

It was brought to my attention that my frame is totally corroded (rotted) and would snap in the near term. the springs that are attached to the frame is at risk of breaking free from the frame and the frame breaking in two. my truck is barely nine years old. i am one of those rare auto owners who keep their vehicles for more than 10 years. i have never had a vehicle that had problems with corroded frames - ever and i have had a few vehicles that were in my ownership for more than 10 years. i take very good care of my cars and is the reason i am able to own them for long periods of time. my reputable auto repair services merchant told me that he has seen numerous toyota trucks in similar situations - mine was the worst case he has ever seen. i understand toyota has many similar complaints and is doing nothing to take care of this very serious situation. i am at risk of having a serious accident. this is my only vehicle and i cannot afford to give this truck up and purchase a reliable vehicle. i hope that the nhtsa can help. *tr

My husband and i have always been big fans of toyota's. they seem to last a long time, and since we knew we would be footing the bill to send our youngest to a private college in 2002, we decided that we would trade our 1991 toyota 4 runner in for a brand new toyota 1999 tacoma, in july 1999. we thought that this would ensure that we would have a vehicle that we could put a couple of hundred thousand miles on and one that would last for 15 years easy. that all changed less than 8 years later, when we hadn't even hit the 150,000 mile mark. all of the mileage on our previous toyota pickups had turned over twice, but one day while my husband was on his way to work, he hit a bump and heard a huge bang. the bed had slammed up against the cab. when he got out to look, he was surprised to see a big crack and the frame so rusted that he could put his finger right through it in several places. i was never so surprised when he called me at work to say that we needed to trade his truck in for a new one. he told me, this frame is going to just drop on the road and it's not safe for me to drive, it looks like swiss cheese. i just hope i can make it to the dealership to trade it in before it goes. i was floored. this seemed to come out of the blue, since i knew we took care of it, did oil changes every 3,000 miles and kept up with all of the maintenance that should have made this last twice as long as it did. just like all the other toyota pick ups we had owned over years, some of which we had purchased with more miles on them than this one had now. we traded it in for peanuts, because of the rust. *tr

I have a 1999 toyota tacoma sr5 v6 with 127,000 miles. i was getting ready to go to town when a relative noticed that my bed and cab were laying right against each other. i check the issue and found that my frame rails were both cracked almost all the way through. i just purchased this truck around july 1, 2007 with a new inspection sticker on it. i checked everything before i bought it and it looked decent, but shortly after the purchased large chunked of rust started to fall off when banging on the frame. now the frame is so thin that any when you bang on the frame it goes through. i have only put 13,000 miles since i bought it all of which are highway miles driving to and from work and/or school. i was told by the local body shop that the only way to fix the rusty frame issue was to change the whole frame at the price of $6000. they said that the frame was beyond repair and there wasn't anything good enough to weld to. *tr

Corroded frame rails on a 1999 toyota tacoma 4x4 with xtracab. purchased used from a pa used car dealer with 120k miles. while replacing the rear shocks, i noted severe rust and corrosion of the frame rails and cross members on the frame of this truck. upon closer inspection, i noted several areas where the previous owner had repair patches welded to the outside of the frame to beef up the weaker areas. this includes the driver's side from the front wheel to the rear just beyond the rear wheel. the passenger side on the rear area between the spring mounts. the inside of the frame rails are filled with corrosion and large pieces of the frame that have flaked off. rust proofing was applied to the outside of the frame to protect/hide the repairs. this vehicle was owned in columbus, ohio it's first year, and the remaining time in w. va, according to carfax. no accident damage on this vehicle. the body is immaculate. failure of the truck's frame could cause loss of control and/or serious injury or death. i am going to ask others via various web pages to report the same problem with their vehicles from 96-04 model years. *nm

I purchased the vehicle from blaise alexander family dealership on october 19 2005. i bought it with 80k miles on it. i paid roughly 13,500.00 for it. my local mechanic told me that he noticed a small rust hole in the frame on the drivers side approximately 5 months ago. well a few months later i had noticed a huge hole had appeared in the area of the left rear shackle. since it was a major safety issue i took it to a local weld shop. he agreed to try and fix it. upon removing the box, the gas tank he noticed he had opened a major can of worms. both sides of the trucks frame were shot from the front of the cab to the back bumper. he immediately called me with this problem. since this was more than i could handle i then took it back to the dealership where i had bought it on october 17 2006 and showed them pictures of the truck they had just sold me less than a year ago. the general manager john panko said himself that this vehicle is not road worthy. well a long story short... toyota corp was called in to inspect this vehicle and offered to give me $2000.00 to fix it. a service manager said it would cost about $6000.00 to fix. well needles to say i am not paying another 4k on a vehicle that i already owe $11,500.00 on. i have no warranty left to date on this vehicle, and even if i did, the frame would not be covered. the alexander dealership would not give me a loaner car, or help me in any way shape or form. they have given me the run around long enough. i have contacted a lawyer and plan on filing a complaint with the attorney general for pennsylvania. also the dealership never gave me anything in writing from toyota saying they agreed to pay. how do i even know if an inspector came out or not. alexanders could be saying this to shut me up. another problem i noticed that many others have is a shimmy in the front end. i also had 2 sets of new tires put on in the same week. can somebody please help me?*jb

Rusted frames toyota pickups. visited toyota garage with my 1999 toyota tacoma, jan 15 2010, after my servicing garage advised my frame was rusting and toyota was having a buyback/warranty recall covering years 1995 thru 2000 due to frame rusting problems. toyotas safety concern is motor falling thru to ground or frame breaking entirely in two while driving down highway. toyota garage inspected my truck and advised frame was rusted severely and qualified for buyback, but due to having a salvage/reconstructed title it is disqualified from the 150% buyback and therefore qualifies for nothing. they returned truck to me same day with advice not to haul anything heavy in truck, and advising i am on my own!! a rusted frame is a rusted frame, even if it had been completely reconstructed with new frame, my frame has no welded plates etc. you might find from a prior accident, it appears 100% original. i understand my specific truck was re-titled due to a previous owner committing suicide in truck, and pa re-titled truck, per the owner i purchased truck from. i am very concerned with my wife or myself driving this truck now. i would be perfectly happy with toyota to repair or replace the frame as i like the truck, but i do expect it to be corrected or replaced, one way or the other. this is a $10,000 dollar investment, i am retired and it amounts to a substantial amount of money we could lose with no responsibility on our part other than purchasing truck. *tr updated 03/01/10. updated 03/08/10

At my annual state (nh) auto inspection on january 31st, 2008, my 1999 toyota tacoma pick up i was rejected because of an extreme frame failure due to rusting and frame deterioration in front of the rear leaf spring mounts. *tr

Excessive rust in both frame members where the front of the leaf spring brackets attach to the frame. this presents a potentially dangerous situation as the frame could break.*cn

We have only had this truck for a year so we don't know what prior incidents have happened. since we have had it since 10/10/06 there hasn't been any incidents only that the right rear of the frame is rotting. *tr

Premature rust through of frame. well maintained vehicle became unstable. upon inspection, frame had rusted completely through on drivers side, deteriorating on passenger side. frame is flexing at point between cab and bed enough that rear of cab has contacted with bed. vehicle unsafe to drive home three miles as frame is near separation, rear spring hanger is close to separating. unacceptable/dangerous manufacturing/preparation of frame by toyota. *tr

Tl*- the contact owns a 1999 toyota tacoma. the under carriage of truck was rusted ,and the mount to the cab was rusted on the passenger side as well. sears service center attempted to do a wheel alignment when they saw the rust under the vehicle, but will not align the vehicle due to the damage. he then called the toyota headquarters, and they stated that the vehicle was out of warranty, and they were not responsible for the repairs. the contact was the second owner of the vehicle, he owned it for three years. *ak
