December 2006 truck parked with emergency brake off and would not move below freezing temperature. all four wheels locked up. towed to dealer, after numerous attempts to fix he stated the wheel bearing were leaking grease and freezing up so truck would not move. truck operates good all year till it gets below freezing and wheels lock up. dealer does not know the problem, but only happens when parked and below freezing. december 10 2012 rear wheels lock up while driving in below freezing causing truck to slide and miss two on coming cars, truck ends up in ditch. would sell vehicle but afraid anyone driving it in cold weather would be stranded or in a fatal wreck. are other trucks having same issue as i hunt and go back 30 miles into the woods and if freezes i would be stranded. *tr

The frame at the rf motor mount broke and the engine dropped so that the fan is hitting the shroud of the radiator, there seems to be a weakness in the weld location that the manufacturer changed on the 2007 frame in this location of the motor mount area. the dealer/manufacturer toyota is not warranting this defect , there are a lot of complaints on the internet, i hope they also filed with the nhtsa.

Noticed rust on the frame of the vehicle with heavier amounts near/on weld points, & bolt points. rust is accumulating on the steering tie rods. heavy rust on rear differntial and various steering component parts. i consider the amount of rust on the frame and the above mentioned components a manufactureres defect. if any of the components fail while i am driving i could crash and injure, or kill another motorist/myself. i spoke with toyota of sd service rep who told me i should contact toyota. i have a 100,000/10yr extended service plan and want this resolved prior to the time frame running out.

2006 toyota tacoma with automatic transmission. same complaint as others. low end rumbling sound and vibration in front end between 55 and 65 mph. front differential bearings, where front axles enter the differential case, have excessive play (slop) in the bearings. dealer refuses to repair the bearings even though it is still under warranty. i have video taped the condition as well as the mileage and will keep records of my multiple visits to the dealer. i have also found other used tacoma trucks on dealer lots with as little as 20,000 miles that have this same problem. i believe toyota engineered these differentials to last only 60,000 mi and most owners may not notice the problem until warranty is over. my 1992 toyota pickup 4x4 with 238,000 miles has less bearing slop in it than the '06.

While driving on i-95 south of jacksonville florida in my 2006 toyota tacoma i was forced to accelerate rapidly to avoid an accident. the vehicle kept accelerating until i doing almost a 100 mph weaving through traffic until i could get into the right hand lane and shut the engine off. once stopped the first thing i checked was the floor mat as i had a problem with previous vehicle causing the accelerator to stick but the floor mat was no where near the accelerator pedal. i restarted the vehicle but it just revved wide open so i turned it back off and called arlington toyota. i was advised to call a wrecker as they said they had not experienced this issue before. they had it for three days but could not find any problems as it run perfectly when off loaded off the wrecker. i was advised to install mat retaining pins. then i received a recall for the floor mats and when i took it to the dealer for recall i was advised to removed the drivers side floormat. i was told nothing more that toyota as to what was being attempted to correct the issue. is that a viable recall? i know for a fact it was not the floor mat that caused the issue but was advised by toyota there was no documented instances of unexplained acceleration with tacoma's. my vehicle is a 2006 tacoma prerunner access cab, v6, automatic transmission with towing package. i really thought that toyota would rapidly get fix in place but that has not been the case and for this reason i am submitting this complaint. *tr

I was stopped at a stop light for 30 seconds. my right foot was on the brake. the engine rpm suddenly jumped and my truck surged ahead 8 feet. the only reason it stopped going forward is because the rpm dropped to normal. my right foot never left the brake pedal. this only happened once. i am first writing now because i heard today that the nhtsa has received hundreds of complaints for the 2006-2007 toyota tacoma regarding this problem. this was not carpet mat related. *tr

On our 2006 toyota tacoma 4-cylinder 5-speed manual transmission, which we bought new, when you lift off the gas and press in the clutch to shift, the engine rpm's do not drop as they should, they remain high and even increase. this has been the case since it was almost new. normally when you shift the rpm should drop between shifts - instead the revs stay constant or increase between shifts. this is not a problem with unintended acceleration, but rather the throttle getting hung when in neutral between shifts. even tapping on the gas pedal does not cause the revs to drop, they stay high or increase. i originally thought it was a toyota feature to smooth out shifts, but after all the press, i have come to think it is a sticky throttle issue, whether due to mechanical issues (sticky cable, sticky throttle linkage) or electronic issues. i contacted toyota online several months ago, got a confirmation that they had received the complaint, but that is the last i have heard. i put in a required month/year/date, but really it is an ongoing problem since the car was almost new. *tr

There was no events leading up, it just started one day. you put the brake on and all of a sudden the truck would try to leap forward with a loud thunk. the longer you hold the brake the louder the sound would be. now when you let up on the brake, it does it. not when holding the brake down. when you let up on the brake, it thunks hard and loud forward. *tr

I want to express my concerns with my 2006 toyota tacoma. i also have a lurching problem once at a complete stop with my foot on the brake. i have never hit anything, but there times when it feels like someone has tapped my rear bumper. i don't know that this is a major problem for me, but i've read that others have actually hit other cars due to this problem. this is not normal, in my opinion. and toyota needs to address this problem before more people get hurt. i purchased this truck because of toyotas reputation for quality and dependability. this lurching occurs almost every day, so the incident date is the last day that this happened. *tr

This is a supplement to an earlier complaint, odi #10161327. there is a whine in the drive train at 53 to 63 mph. above or below that speed range there is no whine. the dealer acknowledges there is a whine, but says all regular cab tacomas with a manual 5 speed transmission have that whine and that it is not a problem. (they don't have to listen to it!) other tacoma models (with automatic transmissions) do not whine, only those with manual transmissions, according to this dealer. if this is true, there must be a defect somewhere in the drive train. i think they are stonewalling me and feeding me a bunch of bull. they also tell me that if i want a resolution to the problem, i must talk to someone at the regional level. so far, i've been unable to find out how to reach them. i'm still working on that. woe is me! i should have stayed with nissan. *nm

The incident occurred in a 2006 toyota tacoma double cab (automatic transmission) on dry pavement during congested evening rush-hour traffic in redmond, washington, usa. the vehicle was coasting (decelerating) up a gentle right-bending grade to a yield sign from southbound 148th ave ne to westbound redmond way (rte 908). as the vehicle coasted to the yield sign slowing through a speed of approximately 25-30 mph, the vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly accelerated at full power with the tachometer needle indicating approximately 5000-6000 rpm. the driver states with utmost certainty that his foot was not in contact with the accelerator pedal immediately prior to or during the acceleration. the vehicle's cruise control was turned on but the driver states with utmost certainty that the cruise control was not set/engaged immediately prior to or during the incident. within approximately 2 seconds of the onset of the rapid unexpected acceleration, the driver applied heavy braking and the acceleration ceased. the vehicle operated normally immediately after the application of brakes. the driver states that no subsequent unexpected accelerations have occurred since the reported incident. *tr

I own a 2006 toyota tacoma prerunner double cab 4x2 v6. i bought the truck new from the dealership and have experienced four instances where after pressing the gas pedal hard, thus into overdrive, the truck either kept speeding up or did not rev back down. 1st instance - about 6 months after buying the vehicle, i was entering the freeway and needed to speed up to enter into traffic at speed. i pressed the gas pedal hard enough to boost speed. as i entered traffic, the truck just kept speeding up. after applying a light brake, i pumped the gas pedal several times and it the transmission finally engaged and geared back down. 2nd instance - while leaving the freeway @ 65 mph i slowed to 45 mph and switched lanes to the right. then i applied gas to speed up to merge and the truck did not slow down. again the link between the throttle and the transmission did not seem to reaction as in a normal situation. i had to merge back because the would not slow down fast enough. after 4-5 seconds the truck slowed down. 3rd instance - again entering the freeway. i applied pressure to the gas pedal to speed up enough to enter the traffic. this time the throttle opened full bore. i put the truck in neutral, lightly applied the brake, and pumped the gas pedal. after 5 seconds the truck finally revved back down. i reached a speed of over 90 mph in this instance. 4th instance - driving uphill the car automatically increased throttle with a small amount of additional pressure to the pedal, the truck surged forward, again full bore. i used the same technique and it eventually slowed. this problem is definitely not a floor mat problem. i now drive my truck very gingerly so as not to replicate the issue. i have taken the truck to two dealerships, both have not been helpful or have recognized the problem. saying that your truck is not on the recall list we see here, call this toyota number. i know that others with the same model have this problem. *tr

I have a 2006 toyota tacoma with 43,800 miles on it. i have taken the tacoma in to valley high toyota in victorville numerous times for a terrible braking problem that they are now recognizing on the prius. the truck does not stop when driving over any uneven surface. when we went to valley high toyota we were told that it is abs brakes trying not to lock up. in fact, the brakes don't work at all in this situation which could lead to a very serious accident. furthermore, there seems to be a problem with the motor mounts as well. in 2007 we took the truck in for its first motor mount problem, it seems that both motor mounts were stretched beyond repair and had to be replaced. we thought the problem was over, but in nov. 2009 the driver side motor mount snapped completely through. the truck has never been driven roughly and this should not have happened. i researched this problem and found that there were new designs put into place on the 2007 tacoma models. the mechanic working on the truck said he could tell the truck had not been driven hard and stated that he had seen this happen before. we have also noticed that since the first motor mount problem the transmission has been shifting extremely rough. we've asked valley high toyota about the transmission several times and they have said there's nothing wrong with it. our warranty is almost up and i'm worried we could have a transmission failure within the next several months. my daughter drives this truck, and i no longer feel it

2006 toyota tacoma regularly surges forward when at full stop with brakes applied. this happens unpredictably and whether a/c is on or not. it is not idle speed increase associated with compressor turn on, and causes the vehicle to move forward- no other vehicle that i have had has done this. this is very likely a software issue with the ecu and needs to be addressed in this manner. your previous investigation may not have been designed to find a software defect, which by nature, can be intermittent and difficult to find. research into the code is required. (i am an engineer involved in aviation software- these abnormalities must be properly researched.) *tw

My 2006 4 door 4x4 toyota tacoma has an unintended acceleration problem. the first incident: i was driving down the ramp of a parking garage when the tacoma suddenly started accelerating out of control. my foot was covering the brake when the acceleration began and when i put hard pressure on the brakes the truck was still accelerating. nothing slowed it down, i was slamming through the (automatic) gears desperately trying to stop the truck. i had to go over walk ways and curbs to avoid pedestrians and cement barriers. i finally came to a stop against a lincoln town car. the second incident (yesterday) i was driving through an intersection when the truck suddenly felt like it was floored and took off. i was slamming the brakes and going through the auto gears and it continued for about 30 seconds until it came to a stop. i am very disappointed to read that toyota is denying this issue. peoples lives are at stake and the problem really does exist according to the 423 complaints. i have always loved toyota trucks but i am sad to say this one is going to have to go. what if the toyota tacoma kills someone next time this happens? i wish someone could do something about this...how many accidents will it take? *tr

As many many many others have experienced, i just purchased a used 2006 tacoma about 3 weeks ago and he lurching at red lights with the ac on is dangerous. i never know when the truck is going to go too far and strike the vehicle in front of me at the stop light. also, the erratic shifting, mainly between 4th and 5th gear worries me of early transmission failure. the excessive acceleration on cruise control is ridiculous!!! there is no need for the aggressive down shifting to gain 2 mph. right now i am concerned with the quality of the product and it's ability to last it's expected life span. *tr

When driving between 50-60 mph a noise and vibration appears as documented by many others and as being reported by the dealership and toyota as being a normal characteristic of a tacoma 6 speed truck. when using the a/c unit after waiting 24 hours or longer a loud noise upon engaging the unit can be heard. toyota and the dealership explain this is normal operation, and the warranty does not cover it. numerous other owners report experience this also. 3 6 speed transmission is clunky (noisy) and makes loud noises when engaging and disengaging the clutch. also stated by toyota and the dealership as normal, and reported by many owners from day one of ownership. difficulty and failure to engage or low as well as the rr diff lock, also failure to disengage unless the vehicle is turned off. reported by toyota and dealership as normal due to non-use and requires a break in period. owners report this from day one to as much as 40k miles. my vehcile has 12k and it performs as others and as i have described. toyota and the dealership claim this is normal operation as designed. steering pulls to the left even after alignment, and tire balance and rotation. numerous painted areas have missing paint due to it lifts off the vehicle revealing the metal surface below without impact or damage as if it was poorly applied. vehicle mpg averages 10-12 city and 10-15 highway way below listed and documented ranges.*ak

2006 toyota tacoma, many times when stopped at a red light i too have experience the lurching. i will have my foot on the brake and for some reason the engine goes to a higher idle and the break is no longer adequate to keep the truck stopped and so it jumps/lurches ahead. pressing harder on the brake is the answer to this issue. i also at times feel like the trusk does not want to stop...when coasting to a red light the truck kinda wants to keep going. i too thought i was being pick but now that i have read these other posts i'm going to take this vehicke back to the dealership and demand a fix..

On july 27th of this year my 2006 toyota tacoma had a pressure plate failure that caused my truck to have to be towed. my truck was towed to a local dealership who told me my clutch was burned up and would cost $1450 to be fixed and would not be covered by warranty. i knew this was not true and had my truck towed to a transmission shop who found my pressure plate had failed with no sign of abuse. i had the parts replaced with toyota factory replacement parts. when the shop received these parts they called me to tell me these parts were a different design then the parts that failed in my truck. after some research i found out toyota changed these parts and part #s in 2006 after i bought my truck. i found several other complaints of clutch failure on the design in my truck. even though i have proof of this toyota denies that there was a part change or problem with my truck and has not offered me any assistance with the $1300 in bills i have in incurred with having to change this part. *tr

Transmission fails to go into gear. this is a common problem with the aisin ay6 6-speed manual transmission in the tacoma from what i see on internet forums. a danger results in crossing an intersection, merging or many other unforeseen incidents where it is nearly impossible to get the transmission into the next gear. in my case, it is particularly difficult for the 1-2, 2-3 shifts and reverse. i have taken my truck to toyota numerous times and in short was more or less told to take a hike and sometimes in a manner than was not the most pleasant means. throwout bearing also squeaks since brand new (tsb posted?), and toyota's only action is to replace it with another bearing that will only squeak again anyway. i do not get why i have to constantly take a truck that is barely driven in for a complaint. something is not right, i (we) paid for a toyota and their reputation, but this was my last purchase from toyota ever. it seems that to get anything replaced on every vehicle affected by these profound issues, that someone must die again as with the gas pedal incidents. *tw

Vehicle has a drivetrain shudder on take off between shift from 1st to 2nd gear at approximately 15-20 mph. this has done this since it was brand new. dealer replaced driveline which did not help. regional toyota rep drove the truck and acknowledged the shudder but thought it might be normal. this appears to be a design defect and is complained about by many owners on toyota tacoma online forum: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t171279.html . there are many other message threads from other owners with the same complaint. searching for shudder or vibration will yield results. i am concerned that this shudder/vibration is causing wear on components on my vehicle and it is very uncomfortable to drive every day. many owners seem to be waiting for a technical service bulletin that will advise dealers on how to fix this. i have owned 4 other toyota's and this is the first time i have experienced this poor quality/design in one of their vehicles. *jb

A chirping sound began being emitted from the transmission. the chirp was present at all times except when the clutch was depressed. the problem was diagnosed as a throw out bearing wiggling on the pilot shaft. the throw out bearing scored the pilot shaft. a new throw out bearing was installed and the pilot shaft smoothed with emory cloth. this solution solved the problem immediately, but within a year, the same chirp returned. the throw out bearing is again vibrating on the pilot shaft.

I have a 2006 toyota tacoma x-runner trim and it has had an issue with the transmission since i bought it. the transmission will not shift from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd and can easily be repeated even though toyota tech's always state that the problem could not be duplicated even though i have done it with two techs test rides. also, it cannot be downshifted easily. if i am merging i cannot shift into the next gear and have had a few close calls. also, more recently i cannot shift into reverse which seems like the same forward shifting, except i am not moving. i had recently parked in a spot that had a slight incline and when it came time to back out, i could not get it into gear and kept rolling forward more and more each time till i hit the bump stop in the parking stall and damaged the underside of the front bumper and from which i had to get some help to push it backwards out of the spot. *tr

I purchased a toyota tacoma 2006 new and from day one had problems with the vehicle over revving on start up, which is very damaging to an engine in cold climates. it also between shifting from 3rd to 4th, and 4th to 5th gears the rpm's will not come down to enable one to shift properly and not only makes for a road dangerous condition but it also causes damage to the entire drive train. i've been unsuccessful at trying to take care of this problem with toyota, quite frankly they have a very bad attitude with this whole matter and to give you an example, i was told by one dealership that maybe i should learn how to shift faster. please assist me . *tr

Dt*: the contact stated when accelerating in 1st gear at 15 mph, the vehicle stalled on 9 occasions. at other times, the shifter would not go into reverse. there was a clunking noise when shifting occurred that became constant as the problem worsened. the vehicle was taken to a service dealer but the problem was not corrected. an appointment was scheduled with another service dealer. the fuel warning light was not activated at the proper volume of fuel. these problems happened shortly after the carpeting was replaced due to water leaking through the firewall. the manufacturer was notified. the consumer stated the vehicle jumped out of park and into reverse. on numerous occasions the truck stalled. updated 12/18/06. *jb
