Defect SummaryOn certain pickup trucks originally sold in or currently registered in the following salt belt states: maine, new hampshire, vermont, massachusetts, rhode island, connecticut, new york, new jersey, pennsylvania, delaware, maryland, the district of columbia, west virginia, ohio, indiana, michigan, illinois, wisconsin, minnesota, iowa, and missouri. corrosion of the return spring on the hood secondary latch could cause the mechanism to bind in the release position.
Consequence SummaryIf the primary latch is not engaged, the hood could open unexpectedly.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the secondary hood latch. owner notification began september 17, 2001. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

 Was driving down a country road at 60mph and the hood of my 1996 dodge chose to fly up. fortunately, all i did was take the ditch and a gaurd rail. could have been much worse. chrysler said they turned it over to an investigation group back in early may. still no word!*ak

 Was driving on e-way going 70 miles per hour which is the speed limit when hood flew up and smashed into windshield the hood has not been open since nov. 21st ,2000 when i had the oil changed and this happened on feb. 1st, 2001 there was no indication that the hood had been released and when we pulled on the release lever inside truck the latch under the hood does not move there are no broken parts on the latch either. *ak
