Fax fwd ltr fm (ms) re braking defect in a dodge ram 4x4 truck purchased in 1998 and traded it, in 2000, reply to gulfport, ms ofc. *tgw the consumer stated around 15,000 miles he noticed the brakes were not stopping the vehicle like they did when it was new. he was experiencing shutter when braking that gradually became stronger. he took the vehicle to the dealer and they said the problem was the rotors and that it could have been his driving style. the dealer turned the rotors, which stopped the shutter, but did nothing for the stopping ability. the consumer believed the brakes were defective. at the 30,000 miles the shutter returned. on his way home from work one day, a commercial truck pulled in front of the consumer. he had to stand on the brakes to try and stop the vehicle, but nothing happened. the consumer had to drive into the median to avoid a collision. the next day, the consumer went back to the dealer and explained what happened. they again told him it was his driving habits and they would have to charge him for the repairs. the consumer then when to a private mechanic. upon inspection, the rotors were warping due to heat build-up caused by the plastic calipers pistons seizing. they had melted in place and would not move. the mechanic stated it was a common problem and was a result of the flexible brake liners separating and not releasing the pressure of the brake fluid keeping the pads tight against the rotors. subsequently, all the parts were replaced. the loss of braking in the front also increased the load on the rear drums, which in turn overheated and glazed, reducing their effectiveness and eventually causing the shoe liners to separate from the shoes. *jb
