Defect SummaryCertain federal-mogul national and carquest aftermarket hub assemblies, p/n 515058, sold for use on 2001-2006 general motors 1500 and 2500 4wd trucks. on the subject hub assemblies, the abs sensor cord departs from the hub assembly at a 90 degree angle. as a result, there is a fit issue with the brake rotor dust shield interfering with the abs sensor cord. if the hub assembly is installed despite this interference, the gap between the abs sensor and the tone wheel may be altered. this may weaken the output of the abs sensor. diminished output could result in an unwanted abs activation at low speeds and stopping distance could be affected.
Consequence SummaryIf stopping distance is limited, a vehicle crash could occur.
Corrective SummaryFederal-mogul will notify its owners and will either credit the customers account or replace the unit. the recall is expected to begin during june 2006. owners can contact federal-mogul customer service at 1-800-563-8507 ext 3530.
NotesThis recall only pertains to aftermarket national and carquest hub assemblies and has no relation to any original equipment installed on vehicles manufactured by general motors.customers may contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty: 1-800-424-9153); or go to http://www.safercar.gov.

When operating vehicle at slow speed and attempting to stop anti lock brakes engage and increased stopping distance is required. this vehicle was recalled for same problem in 2005. i made an attempt at my local gmc dealer to remedy this continuing problem, however, i was informed that general motors would only make one attempt to remedy issue and that i already had used that. the dealer representative stated that i could pull the fuse on the abs and the vehicle would perform stopping without the aid of abs and would stop normally in dry environment, without the assistance of anti lock brakes. i feel this is a design problem and is a tremendous safety issue. i did take vehicle to another mechanic who drove vehicle in his parking lot and the problem occurred to him almost causing a crash in his lot.

Brake pedal goes to floor and is kicked back, no brakes at low speeds 5 to 8 mph. was subject to recall when still under manufactures warrantee. problem is same now. no brakes at low speeds. purchased this vehicle new, very low mileage. gmc will not respond to complaint. this is a serious issue.

Vehicle brake pedal goes to the floor at low speeds 5-10mph during stop. the abs light does not illuminate. very close to serious accident (s). this is not a traction or lack of traction issue. this seems to be wheel speed sensors that continually require replacing. rear calipers on this vehicle with less than 65k miles have been replaced twice. brakes have been a problem since new. brake lines rotted with less than 60k miles on vehicle and gm refused to consider this a defect which it was and is.

Was driving donw sreet in hershey pa, came to stop sign brakes failed, almost was hit by 2 cars, had truck towed to garage, mechanic said he is replacing more brake lines on gm products than ever before, same thing happened to my 93 eldorado. gm is using very cheap brake lines that corrode very quickly, they are not protected be any anti-corrosive material or spray. truck is at an auto serv waiting for repair, was told will be between 6-7 hundred to fix! gm should pay for this!

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. while attempting to reverse from a residential driveway while towing a trailer, the contact applied pressure to the brakes however, the pedal went to the floorboard abnormally and did not stop the vehicle. the dealer had not been notified. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle with rusted and corroded brake lines. the brake lines were replaced by the mechanic. the current mileage was 140,272 and the approximate failure mileage was 140,100.

Brake failure. went to stop at a stop sign and no brakes. i was fast enough on the emergency brake to avoid a collision. was able to make it home. checked under truck and the metal brake line had ruptured. brake lines and fuel lines are rusted. truck in shop now.

On or about novmber 12 the brakes on my 2002 gmc sierra 1500 pickup truck failed suddenly when approaching a stop sign and i passed through the intersection, being unable to bring the vehicle to a halt in the distance avaliable. while the intersection was clear, and no accident resulted, my vehicle was completely disabled. a local mechanic said the breakline had failed - even though there are less than 32,000 on the vehicle. he said he had seen several failures on vehicles of similar vintage and light service. repairs cost over $900. gmc assumed no liabliity.

2002 gmc sierra, concerning abs. at low speeds ( less than 5mph) brakes release, will not hold..recall in 2005, was fine ,lasted 2 years, then same thing, virtually no braking at low speeds, dealer said it could be $400 or $500 to fix, i don't think so. i asked him to pull the fuse, refused, found location of fuse and yanked it and the trucks brakes work fine. this is a dangerous situation and should be fixed permanently by gmc. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 gmc 1500. the contact heard a loud grinding noise when the brake pedal was depressed. he noticed that the front brakes were rusted very badly. the rear brakes were rusted as well, but not as badly as the front brakes. the dealer stated that there were no recalls; therefore, they could not assume liability for the failure. the failure mileage was 48,000 and current mileage was 50,800. updated 01/07/09 *bf updated 01/07/09. *jb

2002 gmc sierra the galvanized steel support cables that retain the tailgate in the open position corrode through and break where cargo or people on the tailgate may fall. cargo falling of the tailgate very nearly struck a nearby person and injury was luckily avoided. this has occurred twice on the vehicle, the first time gmc replaced the cables under warranty and suggested that this was a random failure. most recently they have refused to correct the problem. gmc was notified of this and refused to take corrective action.

I have a 2002 gmc sierra 1500 extended cab pickup with 52000 miles on it. the front hub bearings are already require replacement. on consulting with the local garage, i discovered this was not an anomaly, but , rather, a common occurrence. my previous experience over the years with gm products is that front wheel bearings could be packed or replaced at reasonable cost, and the parts provided audible notice of failure. the current design does not provide this safety feature. the entire hub must be replaced when it fails. at a cost just quoted of just below $450 per wheel. the unfortunate fact is that it is unknown how many owners of gm products from 1998 onward are driving with wheel hubs that are so worn that a catastrophic failure could cause loss of a wheel at highway speeds.. until the resolution of this design shortfall, highway driving is extremely dangerous. *nm

The spare tire hoist failed causing my spare tire to fall off. luckily this happened in my driveway. if this had happened on the road it could have caused a fatality to anyone behind me. the cable appears to be the same material that the tailgate cables were made of. the cables were already recalled by gm. *tr
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
06/01/201170000
2002 gmc sierra 1500 5.3 std cab slt while braking at low speeds the anti lock bracket system triggers causing unsafe stopping distances. luckily, i've not crash into another car or person, but curbs, shopping carts and ditches have been run into due to the truck not stopping. this happens while braking under 10mph and it is rarely possible to get the truck to normally brake, often i have to kick the emergency brake to try and slow the truck. when braking the trucks abs system kicks in the brake pedal goes from soft and mushy to extremly hard and you can't press the brake pedal. i weigh 220plus and when this happens there is really nothing you can do besides steer out of harms way and keep taping the brake pedal waiting for the abs to stop. this happens everyday i've already had changed out the hubs before knowing of this issue and now i have to replace them again . i'm expecting to have to pay more than1000 us dollars for poor design and recall efforts on gm. i've in chicago and suburbs for the entire life of the truck. i can be reached at mrg380@gmail.com my name is mike gajewicz in my most recent brake failure, i was turning into my driveway and the abs activated and brake pedal got extremely tough to press and my truck rolled into my other parked car.
