Defect Summary | Certain federal-mogul national and carquest aftermarket hub assemblies, p/n 515058, sold for use on 2001-2006 general motors 1500 and 2500 4wd trucks. on the subject hub assemblies, the abs sensor cord departs from the hub assembly at a 90 degree angle. as a result, there is a fit issue with the brake rotor dust shield interfering with the abs sensor cord. if the hub assembly is installed despite this interference, the gap between the abs sensor and the tone wheel may be altered. this may weaken the output of the abs sensor. diminished output could result in an unwanted abs activation at low speeds and stopping distance could be affected.
Consequence Summary | If stopping distance is limited, a vehicle crash could occur.
Corrective Summary | Federal-mogul will notify its owners and will either credit the customers account or replace the unit. the recall is expected to begin during june 2006. owners can contact federal-mogul customer service at 1-800-563-8507 ext 3530.

Intermittent and erratic speedometer problem. speedometer will sometimes appear to register correctly, other times will be inoperative, and at other times will register the wrong speed. this has been especially dangerous at night when it is difficult to use exterior visual cues of actual speed to know that the speedometer is giving the wrong information. this has led to several near accidents due to inaccurate knowledge of speed when approaching intersections and curves. *tr

Received letter from gmc about cluster panel gauges sticking or fluttering. i did not have any problems at that time and mileage was over the 70,000 stated in letter. later the oil gauge started fluttering and battery gauge registers battery as dead. contacted gmc on 1/17/08, was told the instrument panel had be diagnosed by certified gmc service personal. i was given a reference number to use when contacting gmc. i had hpr automotive in sulllivan,il. diagnose the panel.-cost $85. diagnosis was cluster panel defective. gmc contacted hpr to verify panel was defective. the cost would be $600 plus for the repair. after several conversations with two gmc service representatives .i was told on 2/29/08 by a third representative that gmc would not cover the panel replacement. i have read several forums on the defective cluster panel. most state gmc refused the repairs, others state dealership where vehicle was purchased did repair for no cost even though the mileage was over 70,000. i feel that gmc should be held accountable for the defective part no matter what the mileage is, since they state in writing they know the part is defective, thanks m.g. *tr

My 2003 gmc 1500 extended cab pickup's instrument cluster is not working. speedometer doesn't even work. this is not safe. i have to park my truck, or even get it taken for speeding. not to mention if there is an accident because gm has a faulty part. that is not fair. i and thousands of others have complained to them but no solution. plus i have less than 70,000 miles on my truck. *tr
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE | |||
10/19/2011 | 29000 | ||
Check engine light investigated, and cause found to be loss of fuel tank pressure due to rotted out fuel filler neck. original part made of non-corrosion resistant steel. other corrosion problems with this vehicle have involved brake lines. the first line was replaced in 2007, when the vehicle was only 4 years old. a more extensive replacement of corroded lines was done in 2008 or 2009. these are serious safety and emissions related problems, and these vehicles should be recalled as a result of them. owners who have paid for repairs in the past should be compensated by a reasonable amount.

2003 gmc sierra 1500 pu truck - corroded and failing hydraulic brake lines. this truck was purchased new by me in october 2003, and now has only 23,700 miles on it. a line near the fuel tank, which feeds the rear wheel calipers, rusted through in january 2009. other lines in numerous locations also show signs of corrosion which will lead to future failures. mechanics in this area tell me this is very common, even on some newer gmc (and similar chevrolet) vehicles. some of these mechanics replace the faulty lines with tubing which is more corrosion-resistant than provided by the manufacturer. a couple of weeks ago, one of the rear, rear wheel emergency brake cables on this vehicle also failed due to corrosion, and the other one showed signs of the same failure impending. both were replaced. a serious, fundamental and compound hazard exists under this scenario. the manufacturer should be required to recall thee vehicles and replace all critical brake components subject to corrosive failures with corrosion-proof (or at least highly corrosion-resistant) parts. *tr

I was leaving my driveway when i applied the brakes there was nothing... no brakes at all, peddle went to the floor. i managed to steer the vehicle away from on coming traffic, narrowly avoiding a serious or possible fatal accident. after inspecting the vehicle i was astonished to see that one of the brake lines was completely rotted out.this vehicle has 78000 mi. and is garage kept. from what i have read this is not a freak occurrence many other gm owners have complained of similar problems. the issue here is complete failure of the brake system. i though modern brake systems are designed to eliminate a complete failure? this is an extremely dangerous condition. shouldn't the system work in a way that partial brake function remains possible with the loss of a brake line. i thought the system is partitioned to prevent this from occurring. if the current safety standard is to prevent this from happening, clearly the standard has not been meet! gm needs to correct this problem. at the very least why isn't gm required to use a higher quality brake line to avoid this dangerous condition!!!!! *tr

This truck and i reside in wisconsin but were in florida at the time of the incident. my travel on 2/21 was to pick up my young granddaughter at her school. i was traveling at around 40 mph in fairly heavy afternoon traffic, i had crossed a controlled intersection about a mile from the school and applied the brakes to slow down, the pedal went to the floor. i pumped the brakes and was able to slow the truck down. i proceeded to the school at a very reduced speed using the parking brake and pumping the brakes. i was able to safely get to the school. i exited the school yard and parked the truck. called a tow truck for the rest of the trip. the mechanic that repaired the brake lines said there has been a partial recall on gmc and chevrolet trucks for faulty brake lines but my truck was not included. he said the worst rust was at the abs control but there were other area's involved also. this vehicle is only 9 years old. i have owned vehicles much older than this one and have never had a brake line rust through. i urge you to do a deeper study and recall if necessary, into what appears to be the use of inferior brake lines and/ or poor placement of the abs control on a wider range of this vehicle. it was fortunate that this incident did not cause an accident or injury or take place as we were returning home through the mountains in tennessee a few weeks later. i again urge you to extend the recall further into this trucks production. thank you for your attention to this dangerous and extremely unsafe condition.

On september 29, 2010, i was driving my truck on rt. 66 west approaching linden va. at approximately 65 mph when traffic began to stop abruptly because of roadwork. i was in the left lane and applied my brakes. at this time my brake pedal went to the floor. i had begun my stop far enough away from traffic ahead of me that i was able to slow down without hitting anyone in front of me. i moved my truck over to the right shoulder, then onto the ramp for the linden va. exit and then parked on the shoulder there. when i got out of the truck i found a puddle of brake fluid quickly forming under my truck, below the left frame rail behind the left front wheel. when i looked up to see where the fluid was coming from, i found the leak coming from a bundle or four brake lines, that were heavily corroded, that ran beside the frame rail. at this time i made arrangements to have the truck towed to my residence. at the time i was towing a single axle utility trailer. the truck has not yet been repaired. this truck is a 2003 gmc sierra 1500 hd crew cab short bed, 8600 gvw. it is nearly identical in equipment to a 2500 hd crew cab short bed. i purchased this vehicle new.
