In a letter dated april 20, 2005, gm notified nhtsa that it had decided that defects that relate to motor vehicle safety exist in certain model year (my) 1999-2002 c/k 1500 series (pbr parking brake system) and my 2001-2005 c/k 2500 and 3500 series (trw parking brake system) pickups with manual transmissions.according to gm, some of these vehicles may have conditions that cause the friction linings to wear to an extent where the parking brake can become ineffective in immobilizing a parked vehicle.gm's action covers an estimated total of 142,585 vehicles.dealers will install a low-force spring clip retainer for vehicles equipped with the pbr parking brake system and install a redesigned parking brake cable assembly on vehicles equipped with the trw parking brake system. a total of 58 non-duplicative complaints were received by odi and gm concerning the approximately 59,000 my 1999-2002 c/k 1500 series pickup trucks with the pbr parking brake system.these included 22 alleged rollaway incidents, resulting in a rate of 38.5 rollaway incidents per 100,000 vehicles.odi is aware of 24 complaints regarding the my 2001-2005 c/k 2500 and 3500 series manual transmission trucks recalled by gm, including 5 alleging rollaway incidents.though the conditions described in gm's letter are also present in the c/k trucks with automatic transmissions, the rollaway rate in those vehicles was similar to those observed in peer vehicles studied by odi in this investigation.this engineering analysis is closed. for additional information, see the attached closing report.
PE03057GENERAL MOTORS CORP.12/08/200304/09/2004PARKING BRAKE FAILURE
Odi opened pe03-057 to assess parking brake ineffectiveness in the subject vehicles.these vehicles are equipped with four wheel disc brakes that incorporate a single-shoe drum-in-hat parking brake independent of the service brakes.complaint and warranty data indicate that the parking brake linings tend to wear out early in the life of the vehicle (at an average of 24 months in service), reducing the parking brake system's torque below that needed to immobilize the vehicle.gm has attributed this accelerated wear to foreign material intrusion and a failure of the brake shoe to properly self-center within its brake drum.effective with the start of my 2003 production, a newer reduced force hold-down clip was introduced to facilitate brake shoe disengagement from the drum surface.this part is also available at the service level for the my 1999-2002 vehicles.gm has indicated that the paking brake is intended to operate in conjunction with the transmission to immobilze parked vehicles, and that in many cases, accelerated parking brake lining wear is caused by rough use, vehicle modifications, and driving with the parking engaged. odi has upgraded the preliminary evaluation to an engineering analysis to gather further information concerning parking brake usage factors and the circumstances surrounding the seventeen reported vehicle crashes.

Started vehicle. put in reverse and heard noise . electronic motor power switch to the abs control unit (called the ebcm-electronic brake control module)had failed causing the pump to run all the time even after switch was turned off and engine stopped.unplugged motor to keep from burning it up and causing additional expense.vehicle has been well taken care of and has less than 50,000. gm should have to do a recall and fix and or replace all of these abs control units that have failed.electronic motor switch to small and overloaded by pump motor. abs will not work creating a safety hazard when braking. with all the emphasis on vehicle safety issues i thing this is a real issue and should be resolved immediately.*ak

Abs motor started running loadly continuously. abs light on. had to have motor disconnected, so don't have abs now. our mechanic said he has seen several 1999-2000 gmc/chevrolet trucks with this problem. we contacted general motors; they said there is no recall, truck out of warranty, it's our problem. we are told it will cost approx. $1300 for repair. we believe it is a manufacturer/safety defect.*ak

On jan. 14, 2000. my abs and brake warning lights came on. both the electronic brake control module and master cylinder were defective. they were replaced by dealer. now brakes go to floor. pull to rt, and are mushy. i think the replacement parts are defective, but the dealer says they won't do anymore. these brakes are still defective and make the vehicle a hazard to drive. *ak

When applying the brakes while coming to an intersection, if one of the rear tires hit a tar strip, chuck hole or bump in the pavement, the truck goes into abs braking, reducing stopping distance, which could caused a crash. the problem has been reported to the dealership. dealer stated that the system was working normally. *ak

On jan.15,2003, i purchased five ( 5 ) dunlop rover a/t bsl tires for my 1999 chev suburban from just tires 408 haddonfield rd. cherry hill, nj 08034 and paid cash for same. at the end of october 2004, my wife had a flat to the right rear of her vehicle, aaa responded and changed the tire for her, when she took the tire to a garage for repairs, she was advised that said tire could not be repaired due to sever cracking of the inside tire wall near the rim, the mechanic placed a plug in same and told her to get the vehicle back to just tires and advise them that he found all the tires to be in the same condition, causing an unsafe vehicle. when i took the vehicle and tire to just tires, i was told that due to a plug being inserted into the tire, which was not placed back on the vehicle, the warranties were voided and they would not do any thing about it. mr. chris pentz the manager further informed me that since i purchased these under a corporate name and paid cash it was my problem. i am concerned that these cracks in these tires could result in a equipment failure and request that dunlop replace same. my odometer reading at the time of purchase of the tires was 54078 and reading at time of failure was 79398. *jb
