In a letter dated november 7, 2007, general motors (gm) reported to the office of defects investigation (odi) that it will conduct a safety recall (07v-521) to replace the crank position sensor (ckp) in approximately 12,000 model year (my) 2001 chevrolet silverado and gmc sierra vehicles equipped with 8.1 liter engines manufactured on or before november 15, 2000.according to gm, the ckp can fail intermittently or permanently.a permanent ckp failure would result in an engine stall without restart.an intermittent ckp failure could cause the service engine soon light to illuminate, the vehicle to run rough or the engine to stall but allows restart.as a remedy, an improved ckp will be installed in the subject vehicles.the recall campaign will start in december 2007. during the preliminary evaluation (pe06-016), and this ea investigation, gm and odi independently conducted detailed reviews of certain field data to understand the nature and rate of subject vehicle stalling due to ckp failures.gm and odi reviewed gm's warranty claims for the ckp with the objective of ascertaining an estimate of those claims representing an engine stall while driving.the ckp warranty claims without verbatim text were the largest segment of warranty claims.using those claims, gm surveyed vehicle owners to gather additional information to determine if the claim was associated with a stall while driving event.based on the survey, gm estimated that approximately 49% of all warranty repairs for the ckp involved a stall while driving.odi

My 2001 xl 2500 has had periodic problems starting and stalling at different times. the starting problem happens about 2 times as often as the stalling problem. they do not happen at the same time. usually, if it doesn't fire right up you have to wait about twenty seconds and try again. it usually starts the second or third time. the stalling problem is less detectable. it has happened about 4 times total. each time i was fortunate to be going under 30 miles per hour and able to compensate for the loss of power. i did not purchase this vehicle as new and do not know if prior owner experienced any problems. it had 30,000 miles on it when i purchased it in jan. 2002. *nm

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 gmc yukon xl 2500. the crank case position sensor shuts on and off intermittently which caused the engine to stall and it may not restart immediately. the failure is related to nhtsa#07v521000 and gm recall# 06083, engine and engine cooling. the dealer advised the contact that there were no recalls. a different authorized dealer performed a diagnostic test and stated that the crank shaft position sensor needed to be replaced. the dealer also stated that the repair cost was $800 and if the failure affected the transmission additional fees would be included. a local mechanic repaired the transmission at for less than $800. the dealer and the manufacturer advised the contact that there were no related recalls for her vin. the failure mileage was 67,315 and the current mileage was 80,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 gmc yukon xl 2500. while driving 35 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled and lost power steering. the contact attempted to restart the vehicle, but it took a few minutes. he drove the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the crankshaft position sensor and there had been no further occurrences. after the repair, he discovered the recall for the same defect for the yukon, but not for the yukon xl, even though it had the same motor. he called the manufacturer and they stated that the vin was not included in the recall, although the contact feels that it should be included. the recall number was unknown. the failure mileage was 82,000.

Gmc yukon xl 2500, 8.1l engine... purchased truck (2nd owner) 8/2005 from gmc dealer. noticed first occasion of stalling app. 10/05 or 11/05. dealer said couldn't reproduce complaint and released the vehicle. truck drove ok for awhile and began stalling again, this time gm dealer said fuel pump ($900+). truck continued to stall on and off for years, each time no one could find problem.. recently, summer of 09, it has become worse (more frequent and longer time to re-start) and after two independent diagnostic tests by two separate certified mechanics, it was determined to be the crank positioning sensor. i had already heard about this problem but since my vin wasn't included in the recall (even though its the same year, model and engine) i am being told that the dealership will not cover!!! i don't know what else to do.. i cant drive this vehicle any longer because it stalls much more often and without any warning meaning loss of power steering, etc and risk of crash. i have called gm as recent as today (12/09) and they are still singing the same tune..your vehicle vin# isn't included in the recall. next stop media outlets!! *tr

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 70 mph on normal road conditions, the vehicle stalled. the vehicle would not restart, however the electrical system worked properly. the vehicle was towed to a dealer who determined the fuse of the fuel pump had gone out. the fuse was replaced. a few weeks later while driving 70 mph, the vehicle stalled again. this time the vehicle was towed to a different dealer who determined the fuel pump wiring shorted and the vehicle needed a new fuel pump. there was a recall #01v159000 regarding the fuel pump. the vehicle was not included in the recall due to the vin. when the manufacturer was contacted, a complaint was taken which resulted in a partial reimbursement for the repairs.

Was driving vehicle, stopped vehicle, noticed that gas was leaking from underneath the vehicle. took car to dealership to diagnose issue. quoted $970 to fix. fuel nipple broke on fuel pump assembly. entire assembly had to be replaced. gm recalled 316,058 vehicles for this issue. my vehicle was not part of the recall based on the vin number. gmc will not compensate even though other yukon xl's and chevy suburban's have had this problem. i have a friend who owns a 2001 chevy suburban and he had the same thing happen to his vehicle. he had to have the same part replaced on his vehicle. this problem is a safety issue. looked at the fuel pump assembly that was defective and the fact that one of the 3 plastic nipples broke, i feel that this should be a recall. this part is defective. now gmc has a lifetime guarantee on the replacement fuel pump assembly. this tells m that they are aware that the original ones were faulty parts. so in other words we've got good news and bad news...we will guarantee the part for lifetime but it will cost you $970 for a part that i should not have had to replace. this was not due to wear and tear. they have plastic nipples on the top of the fuel pump assembly line. gas eats plastic. *tr

2001 yukon xl abs control module total failure at 49k miles. this is a common problem that is well known and documented. total failure of the abs system is a serious safety issue. gm continues to charge approximately $2000 to temporarily fix this problem by replacing the abs control module, only to have it fail again after another 20-40k miles. the problem has fostered a cottage industry providing abs control modules with superior components for 1/10th gm price. it is obvious gm is fully aware there is a serious defect in the kelsey/hayes abs control module due to inferior design and component selection, but so far refuses to acknowledge responsibilities or provide reliable repair. *tr

I have a 2001 gmc yukon and it came with firestone steeltex at tires lt 245/75r 16. the tire's dot # is vn11 bac 4700. i was going south on hwy 101 and the front end began to vibrate. before, i could pull over the tread completely separated from the tire core and was flying all over the highway. the core still held air and i was able to pull over with out any incidents. i drove the vehicle about 1 mile to the next exit where i was able to change the tire and examine the vehicle. the vehicle sustained minor body damage where the tread hit the inside of the wheel well (driver's side front). i have sent the core to firestone and they said that it was caused by sustained high pressure in the tire. i disagree with this because all 4 tires had even treads with out any bald areas in the middle and the tire press was checked right before my trip. when i replaced the 4 tires, the salesman look at the other 3 and he said that they wasn't anything wrong with them. they still have the core if you would like to examine it. *nm

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 gmc yukon xl 2500. the contact stated that the pin box for the trailer hitch is supposed to be horizontal, but it is slightly bent. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the pin box was bending/deforming. the hitch was replaced at 14,800 miles. the pin box is currently bending again. the trailer hitch is used six times per year to tow a trailer. the current mileage is 27,353 and failure mileage was 15,600.
